Daily Pilots Post: Filling In the Blanks
Apr. 28th, 2010 03:07 pmHi shippers! First of all, thank you very much for all your great thinking and lovely contributions, I am really enjoying being the DPP driver this week. I adore this fandom <3. Well, we have already talked about your K/L favorite moments/scenes, but today I’d like to focus on the extended/deleted scenes… How do you feel about them?
I have always had the feeling that so much juicy piloty material was left on the cutting room floor… In RDM's podcasts we have heard of a lot of scenes that were filmed, but yet many of them had never been seen… For instance, if I remember well, from “The Passage” there was supposed to be a scene after Kara hung up Kat's picture, she turns and runs into Lee's arms and he comforts her. Also, in this episode there was a scene where Kara and Lee sit side by side throwing a ball against the wall and talk about what happened in UB. I wonder if they were actually filmed.
I honestly will never understand why certain scenes weren’t included in their respective aired episodes (hello, K/L TABFAYW scene??). But bitterness aside, I am glad that, at least, we had the chance to see those –I love most of them, and I adore all the awesomeness that was UBEX. So my questions for today revolve around this particular topic:
*Which is your favorite K/L deleted/extended scene? Why?
Given that my favorite pilots moment is the second brig scene, I guess that the extended version of this one is my fave. I love seeing Kara so vulnerable for once (even crying a little), and the picture of Lee giving her the Aurora figurine –the only meaningful token he had from his father-- as the symbol of his faith kills me. It’s very touching and sweet.
Also, even though it breaks my heart into tiny pieces, I really like the TABFYW deleted scene. So well acted and poignant. I believe this was the only time we see Kara being so honest and straightforward in her personal relationships, finally trying to be true to herself ("maybe I'm just cheating myself", gah!).
And I must confess that I have a huge amount of love for the extended “Scar” scene too, when Kara asks Lee if he can picture himself with a wife, a porch swing and a stinky rugrat pissing on his knee. I know it’s not a popular opinion, but I love “Scar” so much.
*Do you consider those scenes canon?
Personally, yes (if they don’t contradict canon, that is).
*Also, which scenes you’d have loved to see?
I guess I have a veeery long list, mainly because I am a greedy shipper and I never had enough of pilots interaction *g*. I think the scene I really, really needed to see is the Kara and Lee’s reunion after the Demetrius story arc. I mean, their farewell was pretty intense and, even though I love their next scene together –that one in Papadama’s officejust before they frakked each other senseless on that desk in “Revelations”—, on a narrative level I found it contrived without a previous reunion scene.
Also, another moment I‘d have wanted to see is the beginning of their "fling" –don’t get me wrong, I love the raptor scene and the way we discovered that pilots were having a torrid affair--, but I wouldn’t have minded at all to see how it started. And another one? Well, maybe the moment when Kara met the adorable aberration that was Fat!Lee after the exodus. Can you imagine her reaction? LOL
And, here there is some inspiration for your answers. Discuss! :)
S1 pilots cuteness. Probably one of the most adorable scenes they have together –and the evidence that Lee and Kara shared little routines like jogging every morning.
Extended brig scene. I see this scene as the proof that pilots were far from over at that point –and probably that was the reason why they left the scene out.
TABFAYW extended scene. It's a totally heartbreaking scene, but I wish they'd left the full version of it in the final cut because this is probably the only time Kara actually admits in Lee's face that she loves him more than anyone and should've married him and not Sam. I would really like to know why EJO edited so much out of this scene, since it does add so much to both their characterizations.
"I think things just got more complicated" (UBEX). How much do I adore this one? I really like way UB ends, but this version… I don’t know, it's even more pilots to me, so dysfunctionally adorable (and it’s funny, I feel like it's been so long since I watched pilots… after rewatching all these moments I feel so nostalgic, this scene specifically reminded me of my emotions when I first saw UB and tore me up a little bit).

Date: 2010-04-28 01:39 pm (UTC)- my fave is probably the UBEX pre-sex/post-sex stuff, because it shows more of Kara's affection for Lee which is something that is usually left very understated in the actual show. I do consider it canon because UB was so heavily edited, so of course we didn't see the whole story.
Extended brig scene is also great. Good thing they cut it otherwise we would have been even more duped by the promise of great things to come.
- what scenes would I have liked to see? Hmm. Definitely some more interaction in s4. Apart from that I don't have any ideas off the top of my head.

Date: 2010-04-28 01:56 pm (UTC)Scenes I love....
TABFAYW extended Kara scene
Extended Six of One brig scene
Scenes I hate....
End of The Captain's Hand
and
wait for it...
UBEX.
Yep. Seriously. I don't like it. Let the hatahs descend. The dialogue is clunky and spells out too much, the random Zak reference is jarring, the Lee's "I had no idea I loved you until now" line just boggles, and ... well... it lacks the elegance of the aired version. Just not my cuppa.

Date: 2010-04-28 02:07 pm (UTC)For Extended scenes, Unfinished Business Extended is the greatest of all time, yo. I mean there is just so much more in that one, including the important whispered bits to each other about needing and loving each other and then the gorgeous end where he lifts her head and it's like a glowing neon sign saying "PILOTS ARE BACK! YES!" and then they collapse together. (I didn't need the montage of them loving each other at all....I already knew.)
Also extended, the brig scene with the passing of the Aurora figurine. The dialogue is a little different from what is aired and he doesn't say I believe you which I believe is perfect and what Kara needed to hear, so there's points off for that, but the giving of Aurora gets me every time. He gives her the only thing his father ever gave him (Sniff! And I guess he doesn't know his dad got it from Kara.) Such a symbol of love and constancy and faith. ♥
My favorite deleted scene is actually from Razor, even though it's a deleted set in the time after 33. Kara and Lee are sitting together alone in the briefing room, watching the footage of Olympic Carrier blowing up over and over and Lee keeps asking if she sees anyone in the windows and Kara takes the remote from his hands and is like "Stop. You have to stop obsessing over this." but they don't leave and she just sits there and shoulders some of his burden. I so wish that had been included in the show because it really sets the tone for how much they supported and cared for each other.
Another smaller, lighter favorite is the one on Kobol where Kara makes the joke about insubordinate officers and dysfunctional families and Lee and Bill just look at her and she goes "Oh are we not joking about that yet?" It's just really cute.
I really would have loved to have seen that Passage scene where they bounce the pyramid ball against the wall (echoes of Home!) and talk about their relationship together. Or alternatively like you said Cosette, more on how the affair got started because in the raptor they talked about "every time they do this" so that definitely wasn't the first makeout session and I just wonder how they managed--or Lee managed anyway--to not TALK about things first and stop things before they even started.
Also, would have loved (I think, assuming it didn't piss all over everything else) a lot more flashbacks of pre-mini days. Want to know what their dynamic was between Kara, Zak and Lee after that first meeting.
Oh and how could I forget, the deleted scene from the finale. The one that shows them reincarnated and together in modern day New York right before Ron Moore's cameo. We should have seen that one. ;)

Date: 2010-04-28 02:09 pm (UTC)Agreed. It would have made 4.0 and 4.5 SO MUCH MORE PAINFUL if they'd kept it in. Bastards. ; P

Date: 2010-04-28 02:11 pm (UTC)I don't know if I could have handled any more pre-mini flashbacks though, given how hamfisted the original effort was. : /

Date: 2010-04-28 02:14 pm (UTC)Heh here it is. It starts at 1:46. Hee. It's actually more fighty and less supportive than I thought. Whoops. I still like it though and it really would have much, much better set up his choice to sacrifice Kara.

Date: 2010-04-28 02:21 pm (UTC)I like the banter. I like season 1. Felix is cute. So is Tigh a little bit with two good eyes. But best of all I like when Kara has to sit down and she says she had a rough night and Lee is all, "Anyone I um, know?" Hee! If he only knew ;-) I love that he doesn't know and she's all hungover and embarassed and they're on the Galactica running and bantering and if I had had my druthers, I would have probably kept them all there forever. *hugs season 1* And it's always sweet when Lee checks in on Kara with the soft tone.
I don't know why I don't like the extended versions of scenes in the later seasons. Some of it is I got the first scene first and lived with it so long that it just feels 'right' to me. Another part is sometimes I like shorter scenes. I don't like Kara and Lee to get too mushy or drag it out too long. It doesn't always seem like them, you know? But most of it is that I didn't like the characterization of Kara much in those seasons. Those scenes, even the aired versions, are hard for me enjoy when in my brain kept beating the the thought, "But who is she?" It didn't matter but sometimes it did. So usually, I like the aired scenes better. Except when I'm vidding and except um, New Caprica moaning. Because, you know, dayum!
Deleted scenes canon? Yep. I accept them all into my personal canon. Except for crazy-ass alternate ending to Crossroads 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DId8c0R54c) when Kara is in Lee's quarters. Because that was crazy! (Though in light of the finale maybe not so crazy, I dunno.) Lee's expression when he sees her there is priceless, though. :-)
Scenes I'd like to have seen?
- Hmm. I would have liked to have seen Lee and Kara the night they found Earth 1. Were they happy? Did they frak again on Adama's desk? Hee!
-I would have liked to have seen them when they got to the planet on Earth 2. Lee was so happy. Before she disappeared I wonder if they made use of one of those fields. Maybe that was her true good-bye.
- Speaking of planets. I would have liked to have seen how they got out of the 'lobby' on Kobol. Did they stay inside of 'Earth' for a while? Another night on Kobol where Kara is happy and right and did what she came to do?
I just wanted to see more of them . . . happy. Not a lot, just a scene here or there.

Date: 2010-04-28 02:27 pm (UTC)I mean I guess you could assume it's just because he's pissed that it's BALTAR she slept with, but I really don't think it would matter who it was. There's no way Lee would keep pushing her on the "you got laid?" point.

Date: 2010-04-28 02:44 pm (UTC)Although the line of Lee's that you are referencing and that everyone hates is totally misinterpreted - I never read it like it seems everyone in fandom did, and neither did the people I know not in fandom. He said something like, "i guess i didn't really know it until just now'. That's not, I didn't know I loved you, that's I didn't know how much this would mean. When things are just dreams that you'll never think will come true, you don't really know. Of course he knew, he's always known, but the actually amazingness of getting Kara (that's what he thinks!) - he didn't know how much and how big and how important because he never let himself believe.
I don't really watch extended scenes - mostly because I can't being myself to watch BSG yet. I can talk about it, but watching it withthe end game in mind makes me a little snarly.

Date: 2010-04-28 02:51 pm (UTC)My favorite extended scene would have to the brig scene from Six of One. Everything you’ve said above is the reason I love. There is just so much raw emotion, unconditional faith and love that it makes me so happy and breaks my heart at the same time. Simply put, it was well acted and beautifully shot scene.
I do consider those scenes canon because technically they didn’t happen but we never get anything to the contrary of what was in those scenes. Canon most definitely, those extended and deleted scenes were full of so much shippy goodness.:)
Which scenes I would love to see? That could be a very long list indeed! But for me, the one I really would have loved would be Lee and Kara walking those halls together in the temple like they were talking about before when there was still hope and everything hadn’t quite gone to the crapper yet. I would have loved to seen Kara tease Lee about getting fat because she left him alone to fend for himself.:)

Date: 2010-04-28 03:03 pm (UTC)I can get on board with that sentiment, but it doesn't feel like how it was presented. The implication felt more like he was having an "A-ha!" moment which just seemed... off.

Date: 2010-04-28 03:05 pm (UTC)In short, I accept deleted scenes as canon. Once I see it, it's burned into my brain, can't edit it out. Just can't. Even though I hate the end of Captain's Hand, it's there. It's canon.
And because my brain is too tired to think seriously about anything except TaBfAYW (curses!), I will say that as far as fantasy extended scenes, most of them would be K/L frakking at the end of every episode possible. That is all.
*hugs all you shippers for your awesomeness*
The end.

Date: 2010-04-28 03:12 pm (UTC)(I also think that the hands down best scene BSG ever did didn't have a pilot in it, let alone pilots. This makes me a shipper outlier and as such, I am to be taken with a shaker of salt.:))

Date: 2010-04-28 03:28 pm (UTC)The TABFAYW extended scene is interesting in that if you listen to the podcast, RDM says the Kara/Anders scene comes AFTER the Kara/Lee one. So if you take things into their original context, Kara had that epiphany/conversation about wanting Lee and her to be together and she was just cheating herself by denying them before Sam told her to "go to him (Lee)." Which makes it even more of a poignant action that she was choosing Lee under her own steam. She'd had time to think about what he said in the Raptor on the Algae planet and decided Lee was what she wanted, marriage vows and gods be damned. Of course Lee had to go and throw everything back in her face in the most cutting of ways (and it irritates me that it's okay when Lee suggests divorcing Dualla but it's a shitty thing to do if Kara suggests it) which, if we follow RDM's original timeline, is when Kara calls up Sam for sex and then they have their little bunkroom chat. Kara always seems to act out when Lee hurts her so it makes perfect 'Starbuck' sense that she would call up Sam. And it wasn't a happy thing between K/S because Kara was so self-loathing, which is why she called herself a two-timing bitch of a wife. I don't want to say being with Sam was a punishment, but Kara was definitely hurting herself because in her heart she'd wanted Lee. And I guess when Sam asks Kara if she loves Lee, and Kara's all, yes, no, maybe, it fits that she can't flat out admit it because Lee's just turned her down for his adoring little wife and she's too busy having a moment of self hate and licking her wounds.
The whole scene clicked a little better for me when I saw the extended scene and remembered Ron's podcast.
