Daily Pilots Post: Filling In the Blanks

Hi shippers! First of all, thank you very much for all your great thinking and lovely contributions, I am really enjoying being the DPP driver this week. I adore this fandom <3. Well, we have already talked about your K/L favorite moments/scenes, but today I’d like to focus on the extended/deleted scenes… How do you feel about them?

I have always had the feeling that so much juicy piloty material was left on the cutting room floor… In RDM's podcasts we have heard of a lot of scenes that were filmed, but yet many of them had never been seen… For instance, if I remember well, from “The Passage” there was supposed to be a scene after Kara hung up Kat's picture, she turns and runs into Lee's arms and he comforts her. Also, in this episode there was a scene where Kara and Lee sit side by side throwing a ball against the wall and talk about what happened in UB. I wonder if they were actually filmed.

I honestly will never understand why certain scenes weren’t included in their respective aired episodes (hello, K/L TABFAYW scene??). But bitterness aside, I am glad that, at least, we had the chance to see those –I love most of them, and I adore all the awesomeness that was UBEX. So my questions for today revolve around this particular topic:

*Which is your favorite K/L deleted/extended scene? Why?

Given that my favorite pilots moment is the second brig scene, I guess that the extended version of this one is my fave. I love seeing Kara so vulnerable for once (even crying a little), and the picture of Lee giving her the Aurora figurine –the only meaningful token he had from his father-- as the symbol of his faith kills me. It’s very touching and sweet.
Also, even though it breaks my heart into tiny pieces, I really like the TABFYW deleted scene. So well acted and poignant. I believe this was the only time we see Kara being so honest and straightforward in her personal relationships, finally trying to be true to herself ("maybe I'm just cheating myself", gah!).
And I must confess that I have a huge amount of love for the extended “Scar” scene too, when Kara asks Lee if he can picture himself with a wife, a porch swing and a stinky rugrat pissing on his knee. I know it’s not a popular opinion, but I love “Scar” so much.

*Do you consider those scenes canon?

Personally, yes (if they don’t contradict canon, that is).

*Also, which scenes you’d have loved to see?

I guess I have a veeery long list, mainly because I am a greedy shipper and I never had enough of pilots interaction *g*. I think the scene I really, really needed to see is the Kara and Lee’s reunion after the Demetrius story arc. I mean, their farewell was pretty intense and, even though I love their next scene together –that one in Papadama’s office just before they frakked each other senseless on that desk in “Revelations”—, on a narrative level I found it contrived without a previous reunion scene.
Also, another moment I‘d have wanted to see is the beginning of their "fling" –don’t get me wrong, I love the raptor scene and the way we discovered that pilots were having a torrid affair--, but I wouldn’t have minded at all to see how it started. And another one? Well, maybe the moment when Kara met the adorable aberration that was Fat!Lee after the exodus. Can you imagine her reaction? LOL

And, here there is some inspiration for your answers. Discuss! :)

S1 pilots cuteness. Probably one of the most adorable scenes they have together –and the evidence that Lee and Kara shared little routines like jogging every morning.

Extended brig scene. I see this scene as the proof that pilots were far from over at that point –and probably that was the reason why they left the scene out.

TABFAYW extended scene. It's a totally heartbreaking scene, but I wish they'd left the full version of it in the final cut because this is probably the only time Kara actually admits in Lee's face that she loves him more than anyone and should've married him and not Sam. I would really like to know why EJO edited so much out of this scene, since it does add so much to both their characterizations.

"I think things just got more complicated" (UBEX). How much do I adore this one? I really like way UB ends, but this version… I don’t know, it's even more pilots to me, so dysfunctionally adorable (and it’s funny, I feel like it's been so long since I watched pilots… after rewatching all these moments I feel so nostalgic, this scene specifically reminded me of my emotions when I first saw UB and tore me up a little bit).

You know I have to say that I was always glad they cut those scenes with him teasing her about getting laid the previous night. Because it doesn't fit with his later jealousy.

I mean I guess you could assume it's just because he's pissed that it's BALTAR she slept with, but I really don't think it would matter who it was. There's no way Lee would keep pushing her on the "you got laid?" point.

I think it is Baltar! Hell, even Kara is embarrassed about it and she did it. :-) I also think it's that Kara won't talk to him. She could have told him right in this scene instead of let him find out in the ready room. But honestly, Lee has no right to be jealous, really. He never really did. I'm not sure what he wants from Kara at this time. He's confused. He wants to be friends and talk to her but then again he wants her not to sleep with anyone else, either. They are both so confused. Ah, pilots.

Maybe. But he doesn't say to her "how could you sleep WITH HIM" he says "You just can't keep your pants on"...which I always took to mean "You'll sleep with everybody BUT ME". I do believe he's confused and that his jealousy surprises him...but he sure does cling to it.

Yep. Lee does cling to it. I love him in the EoJ scene when he yells at Anders but seriously, he's married himself and cheating with Kara. He really has no right to yell at anyone. Dee should be yelling at him because she knows. But Lee . . . he clings. His actions don't always make logical sense, but I like it because they show how he loves Kara SO much. :-)

I think Lee always had a possessive streak when it came to Kara, even though he wasn't conciously aware --like when they had the fight in KLG because she slept with BaltarL; or the moment you mention with Anders. Deep down, even though he didn't admit it to himself, I believe Lee always considered Kara "his" (and I love it, it shows how deeply he loved her).

I love it too. :-D That possessive streak doesn't always make sense (Kara needed to belong to Kara first) but he loves her and that is what is important to me.

I kind of agree with you about not fitting with the later jealousy. He's very light and his 'get laid?' is said a little too casually - it would have been better with some edge to it to go with his later anger.

That's what I always thought, because it can't just be about his disappointment in her for choosing Baltar. If she'd said Helo or Skulls or Crashdown or Nameless Marine #3, would he have been any happier about it? NO!

Hee. No, is right. Though it is interesting. Why did he ask, really? I don't think he really wanted to know.

His anger and jealousy later kinda did surprise me at the time if I go back to my first viewing of it. I accepted it because they are clearly in love with each other and miserable. But it seemed a bit much. He's calling by her rank and totally, totally losing it. I'm not sure what he really wanted from her then. And she's so quiet until she hits him.

Interesting if that had all been about her sleeping with Crashdown, though. ;-) Ah, there are reasons scenes are deleted. I still love this one to bits, though. I still love season 1 very much.

I think that scares Lee more than anything else. That she's not acting Kara-like about it. I mean also with the quiet "frak you" instead of some quip about getting laid more than he does or some such in the hallway deleted scene.

Lee, I think, maybe, fears that this frak means something to Kara? He clearly has no idea she said his name, despite Baltar's squirrelly behavior in the rec room. But hey it's the end of the world, there's only so many thousand people left and she's making a choice here and it's not him. And then he's further unsettled by her not responding the way he thinks she will. So he keeps pushing. "It doesn't matter to you? I don't matter to you? You're just a pilot and I'm a CAG? This is just like any other frak, like that time you frakked the major instead of me?"

Yes, that's it!!!! That's how they set this episode up. Baltar clearly looks devastated and frakked up in the rec room. Head!Six and Lee are not happy about this turn of affairs and both are angry and jealous as hell. They think this may actually mean something for Kara and Baltar.

So he keeps pushing.
Ah, Lee, Lee. Pushing Kara never works. Sigh. And even later she even says, "I'm really sorry." Again, I'm not sure what more Lee wants than that. She can't tell him she said his name. I mean, whoa. Though I love reading fics where he finds that out. ;-)

I agree. I take the CAG/pilot line to be him aggravated that they never get past their roles in the fleet. Hmmm... the major instead of him... New twist to add to my fanon!

When he has his jealousy fit later, I think it's a combination of her sleeping with anyone else but him and her choosing someone who Lee perceives as a sleazy idiot over him. I don't think he would have been happier if it had been Crashdown but Baltar added another dimension to it and gave him something to latch on to.

I could see that being the case when he firsts jokes about her hair...but then when he repeats it in the hall...he seems serious.

I also think it is quite possible that he was able to tease her about it because he knew nothing was really going on. And he reacted in a (much) more agreessive/jealous ways when he had confirmation that she had actually slept with someone. I have said before in another discussion that I find it hard to believe that Kara was really the sleeping around kind of girl most people think to believe. Some people here have made some valid points in this regard but I'm not totally convinced. (Not that it matters all that much anyway).

Ok, I see your point, but here are my 2 cents.
1) The whole thing happened after the Colonial Day Celebration, when there was a certain spark between them - she even wore a dress for him and they danced together and he really looked dumbfounded when he saw her there. So I guess it's reasonable to assume that he might have had some sort of insight regarding his feelings for her (and the impression that they were reciprocated) and I believe, considering what we learned much later about the very first time they met, he had been kind of pushing this kinds of feelings down for quite a while (since before his brother's death). It might have been confusing for him to have them resurface like that. It would change things between them. If you are just friends with somebody, it's Ok to tease them about their flings, but it's not so funny if you start to see that person under a different light (and feel it works both ways). If that was the case, to find out the very next day that this person chose to run away from the possibility of a relationship with you by sleeping with somebody else... tough. Of course, they didn't have any kind of clear agreement and he had no right to react the way he did, but still...

2)It wasn't just Lee that acted out of fashion. Kara did as well. He was jealous (agressively so) but she was clearly embarassed (which would not be the norm for her). I don't think the problem was that she slept with Baltar (or anybody else for that matter). I think the problem was the timing. She didn't want Lee to know about this one because of her slip of the tongue with Baltar (how embarassing and revealing if Lee learned about this) and maybe because of the night before. She realized where things could go with Lee and tried to sabotage the relationship before it even started.

3) Let's not forget that Baltar was acting in a very odd way there towards both Kara and Lee. There was clearly something going on and it wasn't just one of a string of meaningless one night stands. There was something heavy on the air there.
