Happy Monday Shipper Nation!! I'm Liz and I'm excited to be your DPP driver this week. I've got games, memes, ficlets, and other goodies planned so I hope you'll drop by throughout the week.

First, a huge shout-out to sci_fi_shipper for an amazing week full of insightful discussion, gorgeous and adorable artwork and scenarios for happy pilots, comment!fic, pilots playlists, and loads of fun!! Great work, hon!!

And now, I'd like to introduce the Return of the Friending Meme!!


shah_of_blah had a lovely idea about two months ago to host a "friending meme" DPP. During my time in K/L fandom, I've been continually impressed by how wonderfully kind and supportive everyone here has been. It's an absolute pleasure to be part of this community. When I saw Shah's meme, I thought to myself that we should really do that on a regular basis to renew old friendships, get to know more about one another, and welcome newcomers to the community. I've also been chatting with some new (to me) people recently and realized that a number of you aren't on my flist. This problem must be rectified!!

In that spirit, I've put together some "getting to know you questions" so we all can introduce or reintroduce ourselves. I encourage using this opportunity to add fellow shippers to your flists. (p.s.--You'll notice I've tried to make the questions short and sweet (when vs. why, etc.) since we've had many discussions of why we're here or why K/L is our OTP. While you are certainly welcome to include that info, I am hoping the quick answer format will encourage participation...and friending...of old, middle, and new guard shippers since posting should be a quick, painless five minutes.

It's not my first internet fandom (Star Trek: Voyager REPRESENT!), and not my only at the moment (Castle), although it IS the only one I actively participate in.
5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples?
Um, write p0rn and post it on the internet?
6. Any current projects you want to advertise?
My current project is not fandom related, actually, although the fandom (and fandom writers) have helped inspire me to get back to writing the original novel I started 13 years ago. If I get a draft finished by the end of this year like I want to, I might write a Lee/Kara kink where Lee is the Dominant. But stopping what I'm working on would be wrong. I will NOT switch to writing kink instead. I *promised* myself I'd finish this long-dormant, 13 year writing project. Really. Can't change gears right now. (Have I convinced me yet?)
7. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have 5 bsg episodes, which would you take? I'll allow an arc to count as one entry to make things a little easier.
The mini, Colonial Day/KLG I, Pegasus (for plot bunny reasons that may some day become apparent - they are, after all, not reporting to each other for about 5 minutes here), Scar, and Unfinished Business.
8. What do you do in the few minutes that you aren't obsessing over K/L?
I write medical software, mother a 5 year old girl, write things that aren't K/L p0rn, watch football, and my new obsession - canning things (after a few successful years of grape jam from grapes out of my husband's grandmother's yard, I canned apple butter this weekend. I feel all "Little House on the Prairie," yo).

LOL, Amy!! What is it about the Wonder Twins that make us write p0rn?? (Besides the angst, UST, and gorgeousness that is them of course.) Wow, I'd never written fic at all...and now I'm writing K/L p0rn. WTFrak is wrong with us??

Eeeee!! Your novel is on my to-be-read list. I am super excited about it!!

*squishes you* Of course Lee is the dom!! Why doesn't more of fandom realize this dynamic? It's fine to have Kara top if it's just for sex, but any sort of lifestyle dynamic would not work without Lee as dom. He's the one with the overarching principles to uphold. Kara's the one that benefits from Lee's fairly regular "kicks in the ass". It also gives her the freedom to be Kara while knowing that Lee will do his best to keep her from anything truly destructive. Doesn't always work, but then it doesn't always work in life either. (Besides, we all know that the sub holds the ultimate power...and I'm sure Kara would be more than willing to gleefully remind Lee of that fact.) ;)

Nice desert island choices. I excluded the mini because I feel like I know the K/L parts and the rest kinda bores me at this point. The others are all essential though.

What kind of medical software? That is fascinating. Do you mind me asking what type degree you have for that? (Is it more tech based and just happens that you do medical stuff or is it a combo of medical and tech knowledge?) *curious about varied job opportunities*

And nothing wrong w/ being domestic. Canned goods are yum!

From the start, I've always like Kara and Lee

Multi-fandom. I didn't even know the words fandom or shipping and all that until this year when i realized that there was such a thing as fanfic.
5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples?
Uhhh, write fanfic? I never thought I'd write porn!fic (and I don't do it for this fandom). Writing for this fandom is too intimidating.
6. Any current projects you want to advertise?
Mostly Smut week in the Dom/Ariadne ship comm. Actually, since it's the smallest ship comm in the whole Inception fandom, I advertise everywhere. Especially since in my head I see the Lee/Kara/Zak parallel with Ariadne/Dom/Mal. The Kara/Dom hangups with dead people just scream at me.

queenofthorns; I'd never have a callsign because I'd flunk out of flight school on day one :P; and you can call me QoT or Thorny!

2. When did you start watching bsg?
I watched the miniseries two days before "33" aired (I'd seen all the posters advertising the beginning of this new show and I was very intrigued by the Lee/Kara ones because I knew and loved Jamie Bamber from "Horatio Hornblower." And then I watched the miniseries and it was love at first sight (for the show and for Lee and Kara!)

3. When did you enter fandom?
Basically right after watching the first couple of episodes. I held out for the SciFi versions until "Bastille Day" and then right after "Act of Contrition" aired in the US, I couldn't wait any longer and had to download the entire season from the airings on Sky in England (the first season aired there first) and then I friended all sorts of BSG people, etc., etc. I think I wrote my first "Leecap" and first fic in February 2005. So I consider that my debut!


4. Is K/L your first/only fandom or are you a multi-fandom type?
No, I loved "Buffy" and "Angel" (though I didn't really write fic for them, but BOY did I discussdiscussdiscuss!) And I loved and wrote fic for the "Lord of the Rings" movies and I adore George R. R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" books (from which I took my username!) Since BSG I've also been obsessed with HBO's "Rome" and "The Wire" (though I'm not FANDOM-Y per se there) and "Friday Night Lights."

5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples?

Yes, I have made icons and learned how to embed videos, but most of all, I never thought I'd write fiction of any kind. Also, I coined some fandom terms that are still popular, so I rejoice everytime anyone mentions the Bamceps. I wish more people would use "eyemoting" for Tigh, though, because I'm really proud of that one :P

6. Any current projects you want to advertise?
Right now I'm working on what turned into an enormously long "five things" fic from Kara's POV (in which I'm spinning my own take on *poofs* and other things. Heh!)

7. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have 5 bsg episodes, which would you take? I'll allow an arc to count as one entry to make things a little easier.

OH THIS IS HARD! OK, I'd take "33", "Hand of God", the Pegasus arc, "Scar", "The Captain's Hand", and "Unfinished Business", I think. And maybe I'd sneak in "Maelstrom" too :P (Although I'd also love to add the miniseries, I've seen it so many times I can practically recite the dialogue in my head anyway.) ETA: So ... my degrees are in economics, but I obviously cannot count. I also can't limit myself to five BSG episodes apparently!

8. What do you do in the few minutes that you aren't obsessing over K/L?

Heh! I obsess about other things :D (Well, mostly I play with and talk about my almost-three-year-old son, who is the most amazing chid in the universe. :P Well, I think so, anyway!)

Hey QoT! Good to see ya over here. I thought you entered fandom fairly early. I might have to stalk your flist if peeps don't wander over here. ;)

Bamceps!! You are made of WIN. I love Jamie too. He's brilliant, funny, and seems like a genuinely good guy. The sequence of my K/L love went something like this: immediate love of Kara, quickly developed K/L love as the OTP to end all OTPs, then became more fascinated by Jamie and Lee, and, after dealing with some angst over Katee's interviews, of course fell in love with her too. Lately I've been rather focused on JB though. I saw his Celebrity Poker showing online the other night and loved that they called him "hot boy". He is adorable.

I can't wait to see your "Five Things" fic. Very exciting!

All great epi choices. It was hard to narrow down to five.

Heh back atcha. I obsess over other things too! Oh well. We could just not care and not obsess and that would be worse. At least we care. ;)

let me count back.... I went to Dragon*Con 2007 with a friend that had already babbled on about this great reboot of the old series. Having no other panels to interest me, I attended all the BSG panels. And then got Jamie Bamber's autograph for my daughter's birthday. So having been introduced to this interested cast and gorgeous man in particular, I decided to try the show and ordered the first season/miniseries for christmas. Husband and I devoured it in days and then hurriedly ordered season 2. That's when we realized we were hooked.

3. When did you enter fandom?

oh, right after finished Season 1. so that would be about January, 2008

4. Is K/L your first/only fandom or are you a multi-fandom type?

I tend to be serial-monogamous. So when I'm in a particular fandom, that's the fandom I write in. BSG isn't my first (nor my last), but when it was IT, it was IT.

5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples?


In BSG fandom or fandom in general? My best friends - there are 6 of us - were all met thru internet fandom. I've known them for 10 years now. Fandom (general fandom) got me to write again.

For BSG - well, I've always been as interested or more interested in the production people as the actors for a show. However, my 50th birthday present (from the above-mentioned best friends) was a photo op and autographed picture with Mary. I treasure it.

6. Any current projects you want to advertise?

No stories near completion at this time. And my costuming creating is connected with a different fandom.

Oh, I am so jealous of you with D*C 2007, although I was in Europe at that time, so I can't complain too much. It would have been awesome to see the cast panels while the series was still going though. Super cool and LOL about Jamie. He does make a lasting impact. ;)

The serial-monogamy thing makes perfect sense to me. Fandom takes a good chunk of time. I can't see myself able to be active in more than one at a time. I don't know if I'll do others after K/L. Right now I tend to think not, but life is full of surprises. May I ask for which fandom you do costuming?

Interesting epi choices. All classics and varied subject matter.

It is unfortunate that we must work. Alas, I suppose it is a necessity.

I am curious about Jossverse. I've only seen a few BtVS epis, but I am thinking of starting with Firefly given its seeming appeal to many and the fact that it's a short time commitment.

Oh, I love your episode choices. Lots of people are choosing the Pegasus arc. I enjoyed it but I may go rewatch given the amount of love it's receiving.

May I ask what you're studying? (I was an English major with minors in theater, biology, and chemistry...and then I went on to become a vet. Life is strange that way.)

We actually gave call signs to the entire famly before I ever even heard of this site. Mine is actually Fudgcicle because I eat a box of fudgcicles pretty much daily. I need my chocolate.
2. When did you start watching bsg? We watched BSG in March of 2010…I’ve yet to decide if this was a good or bad thing.
3. When did you enter fandom? I was given a “BSG recovery kit”. In this kit were videos that I was instructed to watch as well as “required reading”. After reading the fictions, I was hopelessly addicted and at that point I was “lurking”. When Shah of Blah had her first friending meme, I came out of the closet and fell down the Rabbit Hole. I’m still stuck in the hole and my life hasn’t been the same since.
4. Is K/L your first/only fandom or are you a multi-fandom type? First and hopefully only EVER because it’s pretty consuming already. I wish that at some point I could just let it rest and put it behind me because there’s nothing worse than an obsession that has no resolution.
5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples? Now don’t get mad here but I just assumed before I started reading all this stuff that fandom was a bunch of “losers” who had a tenuous hold on reality … at best. If that’s true, then I’m now one of them. HAHA. But really, I never would have dreamed that I would actually create a LJ account just to comment, start commenting about stuff to total strangers and even more absurdly, start email friendships with complete strangers and become good friends with them. I’ve been sucked into Twitter and if I didn’t have people grounding me around here, I would think I had entered THE TWILIGHT ZONE.
6. Any current projects you want to advertise? Yep, here’s the craziest thing of all. I have been threatening to write a book for years (even though I’m not a writer) and had even started making a list of topics this summer. One of you guys, who shall remain nameless, NAZKEY, encouraged me to start writing on my blog again and now I’m writing and publishing daily on ALL FOOKED UP. As far as fandom, I completely hear you. BSG is my first (and possibly only) fandom I will join to this extent. I never really knew fandom existed and I certainly never expected to go to a sci-fi convention or anything else of such dorkish proportions. Oh well, it's done now and I love it here.

I came into the show way late-- didn't pick it up until just before season 4.5 started up. We marathoned the whole thing to catch up before 4.5 aired. COULD. NOT. STOP. WATCHING.

Fairly immediately? But the A/R side. Didn't find you lovely folks until well after the finale.

Multi-fandom! BSG is the fandom I've ever done anything other than lurk in, though. I used to read XF and SW fic back in the day, but I never participated in the fandoms.

5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples?
Oh yeah. I wrote porn. And then I wrote more porn. I (very occasionally!) tuned out my profs during class to write fic. I have learned (and am still learning) to make icons, wallpapers, vids, banners, macros, and the internet in general.

6. Any current projects you want to advertise?
Lord no. :P Well, I am doing a Kara vidlet for daybreak777's mini-vidlet-a-thon, and I'm so frakking excited to be vidding again (and vidding Kara, which is one of my favorite things to do, even if it makes my heart ache a little from missing her). I can't quite get a handle on how I want this vid to go down, but I hope it all works out for the best! And as soon as frakking Big Bang is posted and I can stop fretting over it and editing things, I've got a laundry list of fic to start and finish, including but not limited to: massive crossover multifandom Kara-centric fic, some K/L D/s AU, aaaaaaaaaaand the next chapter (FRAKKING FINALLY) of the Adama Brothers, which I SWEAR I have not forgotten about. Oh, and a sequel to The Forbidden Zone, wherein (SPOILER ALERT) HorrorPunk!Zak breaks up with HorrorPunk!Kara when he meets Steampunk!Dee at Dragon*Con, which turns out to be just fine with Kara since she's really got a thing for Lee. (Obvs.)

I've been on a mad Criminal Minds kick recently and it's renewed my childhood love of Mandy Patinkin, so I'm thinking of doing a Chicago Hope rewatch. Maybe some Sunday in the Park with George. Idk. It's my fannish obsession of the moment. My fickle heart always returns to Lee Adama, though.

I rambled like crazy again, eep, so this is in two parts.

1. Your username, callsign if applicable, +/- anything else you prefer (or don't mind) being called.
Official username is amidala_thrace (for the two characters who got me into Star Wars and BSG, respectively), but most folks call me Liz.

2. When did you start watching BSG?
I got hooked in November 2007, and started poking around in the fandom shortly thereafter, although I was quite intimidated at first and mostly lurked. (I think I was taking my cues from Star Wars, which unfortunately is not one of the most welcoming fandoms on earth. Thankfully, BSG fandom is almost completely the opposite, at least in my experience!)

3. When did you enter fandom?
As I said, I mostly lurked until about January '08, partly because I hadn't seen the whole series yet and didn't want to be spoiled. I caught up the week before Season 4.0 came out, and I wrote several short fics at that point, which were so horrifyingly bad that they will never ever see the light of day. ;) I think I started actually posting fic in February, and being a multishipper, I dabbled with writing both my main pairings. The rest is pretty much history!

Oh, I am definitely a multifandom girl, although lately it seems like I can only focus on one fandom, that being BSG. Silly brain. ;) But as I alluded to above, my first foray into online fandom was actually through the Star Wars fandom, and I was a pretty prolific fanfic writer there by the time I found BSG. (I have other fandoms too, such as Six Feet Under and True Blood - I am an incurable Alan Ball fanatic - but I don't write for those.) I'm also a multishipper, and proud of it too! ;P In BSG my main ships are Kara/Lee and Kara/Sam, while in SW I ship Obi-Wan/Padmé and Anakin/Padmé (with a little Anakin/Obi-Wan on the side).

5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples?
Well, I think me jetting down to Atlanta for Dragon*Con 2010 on a total unplanned impulse is a pretty good example! ;) I almost never do stuff like that, but in this case I'm SO glad I did, because I had an awesome time. :D Overall, though, I think fandom has made me a stronger person and a better writer, more able to take criticism and to recognize when to accept that constructive criticism and when not to. It's taught me, in part, to stand up for what I believe in and not to be afraid to be a little different. Which of course are lessons that can nicely be applied to real life too!

6. Any current projects you want to advertise?
I'm really kind of touchy about the self-promotion thing - as those who know me can attest! - but I guess I will mention that the major project I have going on in BSG fandom right now is a Kara/Lee longfic, entitled Insanity Underrated. I've been writing it since March 2009, and it is based on the premise that one different decision by one character at a particular time can end up having far-reaching consequences for both that character and the universe as a whole. In this case, Lee decides to visit Kara one night in sickbay after her rescue from the desert moon, and he takes her up on the bath request. I'm currently writing Chapter 68, and the fic is in mid-Season 3. I hope to have it finished completely by the end of this year. :)

Another shipper-related project, sort of, that I'm a part of is the new Lee icon stillness community, iconic_lee, which I co-mod with my accomplices stripes13 and sci_fi_shipper. The first challenge (http://community.livejournal.com/iconic_lee/2276.html) went up last night, and we heartily encourage Lee fans to head over and check it out!

2. When did you start watching bsg? Um, I don't entirely remember -- definitely months after it was off the air. I watched the first season of someone else's DVDs in a rush, and then didn't see any more until several months later, when I received the complete DVD collection as a gift.

3. When did you enter fandom? Oh, I lurked for a while and then started writing tiny fics and posting here sometime this last spring.

Many fandoms for me :) I've written fanfic for a grab-bag of other fictional universes, and I read fanfic in fandoms I've never written for myself. But BSG has definitely been the main one for quite a while, now. My fannish interest tends to go in phases, but for fandoms I really love, I always circle back to them again even after having been away for months or years. They hold a special place in my heart :)

2. When did you start watching bsg?
It was sometime during the midseason hiatus of S2. I mainlined the first season and got S2.0 for Christmas (haha, my family never saw me after that). I know I was done by the time Pegasus first aired. (Which was soooooo exciting, seriously.)

3. When did you enter fandom?
It was after Scar aired, and I started lurking in people's LJs (latte, wisteria, a few others). I got obsessed with LJ during S3 and stalked followed a bunch of other people, but it wasn't until really S4.5's "Faith" that I actually entered the fandom. (Hate is such a powerful motivator.)

4. Is K/L your first/only fandom or are you a multi-fandom type?
While it was my first fandom, it's not the only one. Anyone who knows me knows I have become obsessed with Supernatural. Right now that is my primary fandom, although I am still a lurker there. I don't really watch a lot of shows anymore, so I don't really have any other fandoms. I had passing flings with shows like Bones, XF, Buffy/Angel, and Gossip Girl. But nothing concrete. However, if you're a fan of a show, chances are at some point I've seen an episode.

5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples?
Not particularly, except for maybe cons. And, y'know, getting off my ass and actually creating an LJ, and starting to comment on posts. The first few times are somewhat terrifying, but after that it's all old hat. Of course, then you get a new fandom and have to go through the process all over again.

6. Any current projects you want to advertise?
Well, right now I'm working to free Willy from his evil captors in Springfield, Illinois (damn you, Homer!) who wish to destroy him, and also building robotic sheep to jump over my electric fence I've installed in my room in order to help me sleep. I'm also working on developing a hybrid involving Slim Jims and other assorted snacks. Another I'm considering is climbing a tree to steal a bird's eggs and replace them with colorful Easter eggs. But that seems like a bit too much work.

3. When did you enter fandom? After I watched it a second time, just to be sure it was as awesome and depressing as I remembered. When I got to the end for the second time, I realized that the poof had not changed and then I dove into fandom for some answers/support/fixing. *G*

Hee! Heather, I didn't know you were a Buffy/Spike shipper :) I loved them a lot and still do. They are one of the fandoms I return to, and there were some very beautiful fics about them in their day. One of the first fanfics I ever wrote (and which I never posted) was a little Fanged Foursome adventure with Spike, Dru, Angelus and Darla. They can be a fun dysfunctional family, too. And in one of the few original poems I've ever written, I made it a point to use the word "effulgent" :)

1. My username is obviously ddt73, used the same one over on Skiffy. Most people call me Dave. I've even been called OTD (the one true Dave) lol. I got that name for all the promos I captured and gifs I created for BSG. :)

2. I've been with BSG since the beginning. I remember when I first heard of the series, that they were redoing Battlestar Galactica, which I remember vaguely from when I was a little kid. By the end of the first season I was hopelessly hooked.

3. I became a part of the fandom during season 3. I lurked before that. I believe the first time I went online about it was after they pulled the year time jump.

4 K&L is my first and only fandom. Other shows have captured my attention from time to time, but nothing even remotely like BSG did.

5. I never imagined I would spend so much time capturing SciFi and scanning their shows just to find new promos for BSG. I would capture whole nights of shows and would scan through it the next day to search for promos. When I did I would post them on youtube. I became good at it and could do it fairly quickly but still... lol

6. At the moment I'm not working on anything. I never know when a song will inspire me to create a vid. My last vid idea came when I was just channel surfing stopped on a music channel and the song they happened to be playing inspired me. So nothing today, but tomorrow? Who knows...

2. When did you start watching bsg? I started during the end of SyFy's marathon of season one right before season 2 premiered. I was listening to the beginning musical sequance of KLG1 from the kitchen and ran out to see what it was. I was very confused as I hadn't ever seen the "there are many copies" blurb, and I was wondering why there are two sharons and two lees (although I hadn't know they're names yet). I knew I was hooked when I decided then and there to see the whole season 1 starting at 7am next Saturday for the next 12 hours and then on Sunday trying to hunt for the mini series on DVDs.

3. When did you enter fandom I started hearing about and reading fanfic during the Season 2 to Season 3 hiatus (the was a long one!).

I like the several canon ships on BSG; I get really invested into characters and stories but not really that much invested in 'ships.

3. When did you enter fandom? 2007. I wrote something after lurking forever. If you count my lurking period, I was hooked on fandom as soon as I watched the first episodes I could get my hand on.
4. Is K/L your first/only fandom or are you a multi-fandom type? I'm multi-fandom with Firefly and a little Bones on the side. As for BSG shipping, just K/L. Okay, maybe a little Boomer/Chief. I'm all oh noes you can't haz happi that way.

7. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have 5 bsg episodes, which would you take? I'll allow an arc to count as one entry to make things a little easier. 33, Water, New Caprica, Pegasus arc, the mutiny.
8. What do you do in the few minutes that you aren't obsessing over K/L? work mostly. sometimes I sleep or eat a form of food which allows me to obsess more about fandom.

I have found these two activities to be both desirable and frustratingly necessary to obsess about fandom. I have to admit to having lost weight because I simply forget to eat! LOL!
