And now, I'd like to introduce the Return of the Friending Meme!!
shah_of_blah had a lovely idea about two months ago to host a "friending meme" DPP. During my time in K/L fandom, I've been continually impressed by how wonderfully kind and supportive everyone here has been. It's an absolute pleasure to be part of this community. When I saw Shah's meme, I thought to myself that we should really do that on a regular basis to renew old friendships, get to know more about one another, and welcome newcomers to the community. I've also been chatting with some new (to me) people recently and realized that a number of you aren't on my flist. This problem must be rectified!!
In that spirit, I've put together some "getting to know you questions" so we all can introduce or reintroduce ourselves. I encourage using this opportunity to add fellow shippers to your flists. (p.s.--You'll notice I've tried to make the questions short and sweet (when vs. why, etc.) since we've had many discussions of why we're here or why K/L is our OTP. While you are certainly welcome to include that info, I am hoping the quick answer format will encourage participation...and friending...of old, middle, and new guard shippers since posting should be a quick, painless five minutes.
The questions:
1. Your username, callsign if applicable, +/- anything else you prefer (or don't mind) being called.
2. When did you start watching bsg?
3. When did you enter fandom?
4. Is K/L your first/only fandom or are you a multi-fandom type?
5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples?

I watched the miniseries two days before "33" aired (I'd seen all the posters advertising the beginning of this new show and I was very intrigued by the Lee/Kara ones because I knew and loved Jamie Bamber from "Horatio Hornblower." And then I watched the miniseries and it was love at first sight (for the show and for Lee and Kara!)
3. When did you enter fandom?
Basically right after watching the first couple of episodes. I held out for the SciFi versions until "Bastille Day" and then right after "Act of Contrition" aired in the US, I couldn't wait any longer and had to download the entire season from the airings on Sky in England (the first season aired there first) and then I friended all sorts of BSG people, etc., etc. I think I wrote my first "Leecap" and first fic in February 2005. So I consider that my debut!
4. Is K/L your first/only fandom or are you a multi-fandom type?
No, I loved "Buffy" and "Angel" (though I didn't really write fic for them, but BOY did I discussdiscussdiscuss!) And I loved and wrote fic for the "Lord of the Rings" movies and I adore George R. R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" books (from which I took my username!) Since BSG I've also been obsessed with HBO's "Rome" and "The Wire" (though I'm not FANDOM-Y per se there) and "Friday Night Lights."
5. Have you done things you never dreamed you would in order to participate in fandom? Examples?
Yes, I have made icons and learned how to embed videos, but most of all, I never thought I'd write fiction of any kind. Also, I coined some fandom terms that are still popular, so I rejoice everytime anyone mentions the Bamceps. I wish more people would use "eyemoting" for Tigh, though, because I'm really proud of that one :P
6. Any current projects you want to advertise?
Right now I'm working on what turned into an enormously long "five things" fic from Kara's POV (in which I'm spinning my own take on *poofs* and other things. Heh!)
7. If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have 5 bsg episodes, which would you take? I'll allow an arc to count as one entry to make things a little easier.
OH THIS IS HARD! OK, I'd take "33", "Hand of God", the Pegasus arc, "Scar", "The Captain's Hand", and "Unfinished Business", I think. And maybe I'd sneak in "Maelstrom" too :P (Although I'd also love to add the miniseries, I've seen it so many times I can practically recite the dialogue in my head anyway.) ETA: So ... my degrees are in economics, but I obviously cannot count. I also can't limit myself to five BSG episodes apparently!
8. What do you do in the few minutes that you aren't obsessing over K/L?
Heh! I obsess about other things :D (Well, mostly I play with and talk about my almost-three-year-old son, who is the most amazing chid in the universe. :P Well, I think so, anyway!)

Date: 2010-09-27 04:47 pm (UTC)Bamceps!! You are made of WIN. I love Jamie too. He's brilliant, funny, and seems like a genuinely good guy. The sequence of my K/L love went something like this: immediate love of Kara, quickly developed K/L love as the OTP to end all OTPs, then became more fascinated by Jamie and Lee, and, after dealing with some angst over Katee's interviews, of course fell in love with her too. Lately I've been rather focused on JB though. I saw his Celebrity Poker showing online the other night and loved that they called him "hot boy". He is adorable.
I can't wait to see your "Five Things" fic. Very exciting!

Heh back atcha. I obsess over other things too! Oh well. We could just not care and not obsess and that would be worse. At least we care. ;)

Yes, I am Ye Olde Skoole - which just goes to show you how dangerous BSG fandom is, if I'm still obsessed with the show after 5 years :D (Sadly, a lot of my early comrades in obsession have since moved onto other things, but there are a lot of lovely folks who've been around for a while. And wonderful NEW people still discovering the awesomeness of PILOTS!)
I'm ridiculously happy that everyone uses Bamceps now. Hey, like Kara, I don't want to be forgotten :P

Well, it is very RESTFUL watching tv shows and just turning off the tv and not fretting for the rest of the week. On the other hand, I basically forget that things are on and watch them on DVD years later unless I'm totally into them. So ... there's taht!

Date: 2010-09-28 07:52 pm (UTC)I understand everyone has to stay or move on at their own pace, but I think I'll always hold K/L close to my heart. They've made a difference in my life...most tangibly with the friendships they've facilitated for us o/l and r/l.
K/L will be a part of me b/c they've been with me for years, much like other favorites from literature and theater that remain with me always. (Okay, I am stepping away from the sappy now.) ;)

I think there were large swathes of people apparenlty convinced that Elijah Wood and Dom Monaghan were for real an item and there was lots of tinhattery etc. (I was only on the outer Man-loving fringes for a while, so I didn't experience too much of the crazy!)
The movies were spectacular, weren't they? (Although I still have issues about how they dealt with Denethor, but other than that, I basically LOVED THEM! I hope the "Hobbit" thing works out..)
as for number 7...gotta love an econ person who refuses to can't count!! ;)

Date: 2010-09-28 01:14 am (UTC)It's funny--I watched the Hornblower movies when they first aired, but it took me forever to realize that Jamie Bamber had been in them. I just didn't make the connection for the longest time. (Once I did, I had to go back and watch them again, of course!)
I did the same as you--downloaded the Sky versions because after seeing the mini-series, I couldn't wait for it to air in North America.

Hee! I held out until Starbuck got stuck on that moon in "Act of Contrition" - then I couldn't wait. It was the first time I'd ever downloaded a tv show, and I hoped like hell I wouldn't get a virus on the computer because my husband would've killed me :P

Date: 2010-09-28 02:06 am (UTC)I downloaded straight from the beginning (and it was totally worth it, because "33" is still one of my favourite episodes and I'm happy to have seen it sooner rather than later). I got in a bit of trouble for it, though--started downloading at home, and forgot to turn off my torrent program when I went into my office at the university. Oops. It turns out BSG was one of the programs the network really didn't like people downloading. (I suppose because they didn't want us watching the UK version before it aired here.) They complained to the university, who talked to my department's network admin, who very politely asked me to refrain from doing that in the future.

I did the same thing with Mary. I love Donnie Darko but I had NO recollection that Mary was the mom until I just happened to be rewatching it a year or so ago.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be too much progress on this front, perhaps because Bruno Heller is all involved with “The Mentalist” (which I like but forget to watch and now I’m one and a half seasons behind, but Simon Baker is quite !!!! so I’ll prolly watch the dvds someday!) I loved Vorenus, but I have to say that I was always Titus Pullo’s gal :D (I loved Atia’s description of the two of them as the “stern Catonian” and the “cheerful brutish one.” Heeee!)
And Friday Night Lights!!! So sad that it's their last season :-( But I really applaud them for wanting to end it and leave on a high note.
That’s one of the few shows that came back from a less than stellar season 2 and just kept hitting high notes with their subsequent seasons. I honestly think the short seasons for DirectTV and the knowledge that it would go five seasons and no more is a GOOD thing for the show, because they can build this great narrative arc with logical consequences. It’s a marvelous, marvelous, show, isn’t it? I resisted for a long time b/c of the high-school football thing, but then I watched season 1 and was totally, utterly hooked. (And Matt Saracen is SO Lee Adama!!)

HA! Brilliant!!! I love how we have family memories connected to those books/films. My father got me the books when I was nine and we have shared the love for them all this time. I took him to see ROTK in the theaters when it came out and bought him all the extended edition dvds. (It was a big deal because he’s not super-mobile any more.) Awwww! (Now I want to call my daddy and talk to him. Hee!)

Date: 2010-09-28 04:05 pm (UTC)Oh no, this isn't about MY grandma, although I do have a family connection since my uncle turned me on to the books when I was like 13.
This is the story of SUPER FAN, who was affectionately known as "Grandma" on theonering.net. Basically, she was an older lady (I think at that time, she was around 70) and had read the books EVERY YEAR since it had been published. Yup, once a year. So, she did a daily post called "Today in Middle Earth" and had figured out the calendar and would tell everyone what was happening on that day in Middle Earth. When the movies came out, she went and saw EVERY SINGLE showing, EVERY DAY for as long as they were playing in her neighborhood and she kept all the ticket stubs. Any way, when the Oscars rolled around for ROTK (and I admit, when they did the clean sweep, I cried), theonering.net hosted a party in Hollywood (which coincidentally, is the party all the cast/crew attended with the exception of Sean Astin who's a kiss-ass). "Grandma" really wanted to go to this thing, but she was an older lady living off of social security so they did a huge campaign and we all contributed and bought her a ticket to LA. She flew out here and was treated like royalty by all the fans. She's brought her ticket stubs with her and showed them to PJ and Richard Taylor and they took her in to a radio interview the day after the Oscars. They all knew about her, because they had all been lurking on theonering.net since the beginning. She was thrilled. She got to meet all the cast, etc. The boards were going crazy when all of that was going on. We were happier for HER to have this experience than anyone else. It was one of the best "come together" moments in fandom that I've ever had.
Any way ... isn't that a cool story?
