DPP: Long-winded thoughts on Kara/Lee...with Lee Celebration to follow

Hiya Shipper Nation, 

I’ve been pondering the state of our ship tonight and started thinking about the classifications of shippers as “Kara people” or “Lee people”. It’s a bit of an odd phenomenon, but it seems that many of us identify so completely with one or the other of them, that we actually came to be shippers after falling in love with either Kara or Lee and then acknowledging the obvious truth that they were meant for each other. (As opposed to falling for the couple first and then coming to appreciate its individual parts.) 

We then seem to develop love for the other side of the coupling almost because we love the first character so much that we want their emotional/spiritual/romantic life to be successful. Maybe I am biased because this is the road I followed into shipperdom, having first fallen in love with Kara, then with Kara/Lee, and finally with Lee individually as I paid more attention to him. However, despite my possible bias, I know I have heard similar stories from at least a few of you, so I’m not completely alone in this phenomenon.

Therefore, I’d like to spend the next two days focusing on our pilots as individuals so that we may better appreciate them as a couple. Since I’ve seen more lists extolling Kara’s awesomeness than I have Lee lists, I think we should start with Lee. Come on guys, the boy deserves his own list!!  (If you've already made one, please feel free to post a link!) 

P.S.--I don’t want this post to become Kara vs. Lee (gods know they do that to themselves enough on their own!). Also, maybe this is my naïve desire to find the best in people, but it’s next to impossible for me to comprehend loving one part of K/L without loving the other. Anyhow, this post is not the place to debate who did what to whom on New Caprica, etc. We are now officially celebrating, folks!! We are still alive and kicking one year after the worst finale in history. So…Thursday is Lee day, Friday is Kara day, Saturday is Kara/Lee day, and Sunday is Kara/Lee Shippers day. Thus proclaimeth the Trooper Kitty.

First, a request...if anyone has any Lee-centric vids out there, could you post them? Everything I'm finding is more Lee/Kara or Kara-centric. Thanks!

Okay, so here I go..."Ka...Kara Thrace loves Lee Adama"...and so do I.

1. Sometimes doing the "right" thing is important, even if it's not the "smart" thing.
2. He wears his heart on his sleeve and it's adorable.
3. He's Captain Apollo.
4. He had the balls to point a gun at Tigh's head.
5. He is more brilliant than he lets people realize. (He let Kara take credit for the stealth mission on Res. Ship, he made Colonial One disappear on a hunch from war college, he goes right to work as CAG at the end of the worlds and acts like he's been doing it forever)
6. He pushes everyone else aside to get to Kara when she comes back from the dead. (He gets to her WAY before Sam does.)
7. He puts family first. (Zak, Kara, even Adama)
8. He isn't immune to gaining weight when he's depressed.
9. He "knows how to handle Kara Thrace". ;)
10. He is a perfectionist.
11. He didn't settle for being what his father wanted him to be.
12. He let Romo keep his dead cat that must have smelled awful in the room with them...and then brought him Jake.

Ok so I have been a Lee!girl since the first moment I saw him and then I loved Kara before I realized they were meant to be...anyway this is my list (and it has some points in common with my favorite character ever, Dean Winchester):

1.Despite everything he loved his family and he's a big brother. I love big brothers!
2.He's a brave.
3.He's Apollo and I think the call-sign name is meaningful, considering who Apollo is.
4.He needed to be reassured sometimes (as before his mission in The Hand of God). I love vulnerable!Lee.
5.He did what he thought was right even though it's not always the best choice for him.
6.He was loyal to his own beliefs but he was also able to grow up and embrace his destiny (unfortunately bad timing when it was about Kara).
7.He's brilliant and he shined when he let himself go.
8.He's a great CAG and he took the burden of the responsability without complaining.
9.He trusted and believed in Kara, always.
10.He's not perfect and he's flawed, but he hadn't lost the ability to love and believe even when there was the end of the world around him.
11.He faced his father and tried to rebond.
12.He admitted he didn't want to live anymore.
13.He falls and he turns up.
14.He regretted his past actions and was in pain because he couldn't amend.
15.He cared, for everything.

Ok, so I am a Lee-centric K/L shipper. I love and adore Kara, but Lee pushes my buttons. Many of the reasons that I love Lee also frustrate the hell out of me.

1. He always tries to do the right thing, even if it fraks him in the end.
2. He cries when he is sad.
3. He rolls the hard six, even when it might be risking Kara's life.
4. He's full of anger, but channels it into work instead.
5. When he loves someone, he is loyal to a fault (except for his father, but that's another story).
6. He forgives, even when he shouldn't.
7. He takes responsibility for his actions.
8. He takes power when offered, but does not seek it out.
9. He's not afraid to run up to Kara and hug her.
10. He touches faces as a sign of love. O.M.G. *wibbles*

Like any good love interest, there are things about Lee that make me crazy.
1. He knows what he wants (Kara) but does not take action.
2. He never chases her down after an argument.
3. He's willing to settle instead of risking it all.

And on a more superficial note, I love Lee because he's frakking gorgeous.

Oh Shipper, these are awesome reasons. When you write them down I totally recognize them all as part of the reason I love Lee too. I just can't seem to put my Lee reasons into words the way I can for Kara. That's why we must have both Lee-centric and Kara-centric shippers to do our wonder twins justice!

As you, I am on of those who fell in love with Kara from the beginning, then with Kara/Lee and finally with Lee (even though I must say that I liked him right from the start, but it wasn't crazy love, if you get what I mean). However, right now I must admit that I love Lee to bits, he is my nº 1 TV boyfriend without ant doubt.

1) I love him because he is conflicted and flawed, because he is not the typical young lead in terms of conventional television standards.
2) I love his contradictions, his pragmatic idealism. He is smart and has a conscience, and is a man defined by his beliefs (Lee/Democracy), who would sacrifice everything for his ideals and the greater good.
3) I love hat he was usually placed in the position of having to make hard choices, and he actually made them and accepted the responsibility for the consequences of his choices.
4) I love his his atheism and skepticism, and the fact that despite everything, he always had faith in people and believed in a better future.
5) I love that he is as badass as Kara when it's necesary (Alpha!Lee FTW!!)
6) I love that he is someone who recognized and respected people with undeaniable leadership skills ("Lady's in charge" <333).
7) I love his daddy issues,
8) And his self-destructive streak
9) I love that in the end, he became his own man.
10) I love that he is so incredibly hot (I am human and shallow, what can I do? ;)).
11) I love his boyish, beautiful smile.
12) I love his devotion to Kara, that he was his friend/colleague/brother/lover/soulmate, and never gave up on her ("whatever it takes", "I believe you"),

Awww, yay for the Lee love! He was the first character I fell in love with on BSG, right from the moment he gave that little pissy face of discontent before getting out of his Viper in the miniseries :D And he's the character who kept me watching even when I HATED what they were doing to him and the direction the show had taken, and he's the character who will make sure I never quite cut my ties. OK, so this is almost a year to the day since my LAST post of Lee Adama Love (http://queenofthorns.livejournal.com/425091.html) with visual aids. But just in case you don't feel like clicking over, here, in a nutshell is why I love Lee:

He's always been my point of entry into this world of BSG - because he's so human - no special destiny, no visions, no larger-than-life attributes. Just human - petty and vengeful, but also brave and principled, selfish and self-sacrificing, pragmatic and idealistic, Lee, more than most people on the show, has always been willing to roll the hard six, no matter what it cost him, while simultaneously being capable of being a dork (and sometimes a jerk.) But he's fundamentally a good and decent man, and the few surviving humans on BSG could do a lot worse than to have him as their representative.

I love that he is just Lee. He doesn’t change himself or his morals for anyone (well Kara being the exception to every rule)
I love that even after everything, he still feels like he may be betraying his baby brother by going after Kara.
I love that he is loyal to a fault.
I love that once he makes a promise nothing will keep him from fulfilling it.
I love that he puts Sam first and helps him, even though Kara’s death devastated him like no one else.
I love that his dedication to right and wrong is firm.
I love that his devotion to Kara is like none other.
I love that he puts his heart on the line for Kara time and time again.
I love that he can make dirty scruff look HOT!
I love that he is beautiful inside and out. He’s got a great heart and a great set of abs and arms to go with it.
I love that even as politician he wasn’t willing to compromise his beliefs. (He may be disappointed in me since I’m doing this list from the House Floor. Sorry Lee, you are more important.)

I couldn't say which of Lee and Kara I loved first. I think I actually loved them both for themselves before I loved them together. Anyways.

1) He'll tell you straight out if he thinks you need a kick in the ass.
2) He's not afraid to cry.
3) He dances with the woman he loves.
4) He can change things from inside the box, and he's comfortable reaching outside when the situation warrants, too.
5) He's smart, and smart is sexy.
6) He has an amazing body to go with that fabulous brain.
7) He knows when he's right.
8) He holds a grudge, but he can learn from his past, too.
9) He believes is something bigger than himself.
10) He doesn't always understand himself or where he's going or what he's doing. And that's okay.

Lots of great reasons here that I agree with.
I want to add one to the list:

I love that Lee does not need to be the "alpha male" in his relationship with Kara. I don't mean dominant/submissive, I mean more in personality terms, like strong personality.
To give an example of what I mean, you see a lot of alpha males in romance novels. I like that he/his sense of self worth/his masculinity is not threatened by Kara being the "alpha male" in their relationship. He is not a wimp either and he is alpha!Lee when the situation requires it and I love that about him too.

I love that Lee is a boy scout. I have heard it used as a derogatory term about him but I think it's a good thing.
