DPP: Fanon Complaints

Special destinies. Poofs. Pigeons. Almost table fraks. We all have things that we don't like about canon. But what about fanon? Do you not like when Starbuck is characterized as an easy lay? Do you hate stick-up-his-ass!Lee? Do pilot babies make you cringe? Here's your chance to complain about the things in fic that bug you.

Most of my pet peeves have been aired already (generally comes down to OOC, bad writing) but I'll just add that I don't like to hear about how Lee is the most beautiful man alive/the gods gift to women/everyone--male or female--wants to have sex with him and have his babies. Also anything about him radiating "sheer masculinity." Maybe you, author, think so, but not everybody does and it would be nice to see a little individuality.

I think you're actually getting at a good peeve to discuss, which is when the author inserts themself into the story rather than writing what Kara would think or say (or conversely Lee, though it happens far more often the other way). Not a full on Mary Sue, but more of a "fangirl speak" tone to things. Tres annoying.

Kara knows Lee is hot (and she'll sneak a peek when he drops his towel) but she doesn't get hung up on it, IMO. Let's face it, she's had a lot of hot ass, she is Kara Thrace. ;)

And for me, I hate when Lee's blue eyes are referred to in over-the-top swooning tones.

I actually try to avoid eye descriptions altogether for fear of personal schmoop seeping in. If the story is in either of their POVs, there is no cerulian orb description that makes a lick of sense.

Ha, I didn't want to say it...but it often feels like a bit of self-insert, especially when it's written as everyone seeing him that way. Which would be irritating anyway, but doubly so because I feel like it perpetuates the stereotype of us fanfic writers as just a bunch of women posting our sexual fantasies on the internet.

And yes, there's this weird collective obsession with blue eyes. Spike got the same treatment in BtVS fandom.

Oh dear. I am so, so very bad for over the top eye description.... amongst endless description of ev-er-y-thing in the room.

My hubby (who betas) has actually commented to me: "You're doing the eye thing again."
