Before we get to today's topic, I really do have some unfinished business to take care of. ;) The poll for your favorite scenes is now closed, and the awards ceremony post will go up this evening.

Okay! With that announcement out of the way, let's talk about

In UB, Bill mentions to Laura that a dance is a military tradition. Now, since they've been on the run, they probably haven't had the time to have one previously, but if they had, would Kara and Lee still have ended up in the ring? At what points would they have been least likely to call each other out? Or would they always have fought? Who else would they call out and why? If civilians could participate, would Lee and Sam have fought?

Talk amongst yourselves! :D See you back here tonight for the exciting conclusion to YOUR FAVORITE PILOTS SCENES! /dramatic announcer voice

Lee would have fought the old man and probably anyone else on the ship at the beginning (he had attitude). Kara would have fought Tigh for sure!

Also, I always thought that if Helo hadn't gotten off the raptor on Caprica (which I would have never let him do... he is a military asset, no way he is just staying on the planet. That is like going AWOL) then he and Chief might have fought.

Whoa, sam and lee in the ring. Now that's something to consider. First, that would be hot. Second, well....crap, I really can't stop thinking about #1, so nevermind.

I actually think that there was a time (maybe from about 33 through YCGHA or maybe even Kobol's Last Gleaming) that Lee and Kara probably wouldn't have ended up in the ring. There might have been some time between Home and Scar that they wouldn't have felt the need to lay into each other, too. If fact, I think that the morning after Colonial Day, and the time between Scar and the actual dance are probably the only times they would have actually ended up in the ring, facing each other down. They were definitely combative, but I don't think it often went to the length of needing to call each other out and make it physical. Or maybe, more accurately, if they had gotten into the ring together at another time, it wouldn't have carried as much weight as what we saw.

Lee and Sam in the ring... Yeah. I'm with [livejournal.com profile] sci_fi_shipper

Lee would have never called Sam out, I don't think. I think Sam would have fought Lee, and Lee would pull his first couple punches until he realized Sam wanted to frakkin' kill him.

Lee just wouldn't really want to put anyone in that position--not just actually fighting Sam but making Dee watch. He fights Kara because she's Kara and he's always been rather frakked when it comes to her. Plus, she's the one who broke his heart--it's not Sam's fault that they love the same girl, but it is Kara's fault that she abandoned Lee and ran off to marry Sam.

I agree with you about lee. I don't think lee would ever call sam out. Despite the angst, there's something pretty frakking civilized about the quad of doom. Sam and lee had their brief confrontation, but kara and dee, only when kara was drugged up.

A strange kind of honor, to be sure, but I completely agree.

I think early on, Kara and Lee were more friendly and wouldn't have gotten into the ring unless there was a bet and they could make some money.

I can see Dee calling Kara into the ring even if its just for a show that she could take on the mighty Starbuck. Granted, the fight would like the one between HotDog and Kara in UB.

As fun as would be to see Lee and Sam in the ring, I would have to agree with the masses, Lee would NEVER EVER call on Sam. He is too much of a good guy, he wouldn't hurt Kara.

If civilians, I'm sure there would have been a line of people to take on Zarek.

Some of the fights were friendly, so I can't say it never would've happened. Sam and Lee fighting would be more awkward than anything else, so I don't think they'd be up for it. There totally would have been a fight between Kat and Kara at some points.

I'd love to see an AU where they hold the dance early on after the Colonial Day events, when the anger between K & L is more about total UST and uncontrollable jealousy than real betrayal, and kind of comes out of nowhere during the fight and surprises everybody.

Agreed. But...I don't really think Sam would call Lee out either. Unless there was a ring on the actual Algae planet. And even then I'm not sure.

Yeah I was gonna answer post-Home/pre-Scar too for a not getting in the ring period. (And actually, post-Crossroads.)

I could see them in S1 totally sparring for fun and to "show the kids how it's done" but it would have been a totally different kind of match.

I agree that it'd definitely depend on the day--but I think there were certainly times that Sam would have taken the opportunity to lay into him.

In public though? Somehow I think both men would find it really distasteful in a way.

Kara would have definitely called out Kat at some point. Kat would have lasted longer than Hot Dog.

I can't picture Dee or Sam ever taking part. Sam's too laid back and affable and Dee's too... I don't think I mean reserved, but fighting's not her thing (snide remarks in a Raptor and suicide are more her thing- meh).

And I agree with Tara that Starbuck and Apollo would have shown the kids how they do, but it wouldn't have been all hurt and angsty like UB. I think it might have been inadvertantly flirty and still very UST, but it would have been showing off under the guises of their callsigns.

Fighting over a woman that cheats on both of them, yeah. Distasteful is a good word for how I think they'd see it.

Well I was thinking more of "airing dirty laundry in public" kind of distasteful because I can't really imagine that either of them thinks of Kara as "that woman who cheats on both of them"

I guess I think Sam's actually *more* likely to do it at a dance than in private. He's allowed to at the dance--it's supposed to be a way to relieve tensions, stop grudges, allow these people to fight it out. As much as he may want to in private, I think he's held back by ideas of things like manners and appropriateness. But the dance is some kind of permission.

I think passive-aggressive is the term you're looking for... ;-P

But I also think you're right. Dee isn't a fists and kicks type of girl. She fights as dirty as Pilots, but she fights with her head and her tongue and her emotions.

I think I could see Sam calling out Lee around Eye of Jupiter, though. He was hurting and the betrayal... He didn't seem to care so very much who was watching when Kara was trying to keep them from pummeling each other on the Algae planet. But for the most part, I agree. Sam was too laid back to bring it to fisticuffs.

See in my mind, it's not really airing dirty laundry. It's not like it's something people don't already know.

I also think Lee's a bit too.... Masochistic when it comes to Kara to call Sam out. He, for some reason, feels like he deserves the punishment. He never ever fights for her otherwise. Not with other people. He lets her make the choices concerning their 'relationship' and accepts those decisions.

In that case, I think the end might have been totally different... In the way that by the end of the fight everyone in the room would have known damn well they were watching foreplay...

he'd have to be pushed into it somehow. He'd fight for her to keep her from Leoben or similar if he knew about what was happening on NC, but not from someone who she obviously prefers over him. Those hits he'll just take.

There are times when he obviously pulls himself together enough to make himself known to her, but every time he does, something happens to distract him or dissuade him. It happens to her too, likr after Sacrifice when Dee's with him in sickbay, or after she discovers her body on the first Earth. They do it to themselves, each thinking that the other couldn't possibly prefer them when they have such obviously better choices.... Nevermind that they're both wrong.

I agree. I sometimes think Lee is a bit wary of having to fight for people's love all his life. He doesn't think he can make people want him, especially Kara.

Exactly. He wants very much to be wanted, but he's too proud to beg for it. He tries very hard to seem unaffected, but the puppydog eyes give it away. He wants her, but he wants her to want him just as much. He's sort of a girl sometimes, but I love him.

Wow, excellent points and evidence in both this and your previous comment. I agree. Lee is very much the masochist when it comes Kara, probably mostly b/c of the guilt he still feels over all that happened (or didn't happen but that he wanted to happen) when she was with Zak.

Thanks. Lee makes the most sense in my head, at least I understand where he's coming from even if I don't particularly agree with him, so when I write, it's mainly from his POV. I adore Kara, but she's still something of a mystery to me a lot of the time. A lot of the masochistic reasoning is summed up in the argument with Sam on the algae planet. The 'if she's dead, I'll shoot you,' 'If she's dead, I'll let you' exchange. At least in my mind.

"He fights Kara because she's Kara and he's always been rather frakked when it comes to her. Plus, she's the one who broke his hear"
Yes, it is all true. But even so, it was Kara who taunted him to fight. For all his angry outbursts, it seems to me that he is more of a passive-agressive guy rather than simply agressive. Like that time after Kara slept with Baltar. He yelled but she hit him first.

I can't. She would have to have been on really strong drugs to ever think she could take on Starbuck. LOL

There is not a chance in hell she would win or actually have a chance against Kara but I think the snobbery that comes off Dee, she might want to prove that she can hold her own against Kara more in regards to Lee then the actual fight.

Now I don't even know if my own ramble just made sense or not.

Hmmmm... I think your subconscious desire to see Starbuck kick Dee's ass (and in public, so as to cause complete humiliation) led you to mistake snobbery for stupidity.lol

I think you are right! I was thinking the same thing after I sent the last comment. I would just love to see Kara pummel Dee's ass in public and put her in her place.:D
