Daily Pilots Post: That's Just the Way I Like It.

I thought it might be an interesting idea to devote a DPP to deep introspection and thoughts of the thinky variety because… well, useless K/L rumination is just my thing. But dudes, after pondering the idea for a while I just realized that it’s still Tuesday and we have the whole week to get trascendental and misty. So instead, today I’d love to chat about one of the reasons fic is such an enjoyable experience…

My personal history with porn is such as it goes… When I first discovered fandom –less than two years ago—I started reading BSG fic because I craved to learn more about the characters and their story, I wanted to dissect and discuss them and flesh the show in the process, and it occurred to me that fic was the perfect means for this kind of intellectual purpose (yes, it’s true, so shut up! ;)). But one fateful day I stumbled upon elzed ’s journal and her glorious smutty smut, and afterwards I discovered elly427 ’s stories, and soon after that I learned that something with such a striking name as pornbattle existed. And thus started my personal descent into Hades… Needless to say, I’ve become a total (and proud) K/L perv (not that I really care much, being honest… the only thing I try to avoid is reading porn at work!). So... what's your personal experience with smut?

Anyway, here some questions to ponder...

*What are your favorite K/L kinks?
(Oh, this is really easy… I love with passion infidelicious --I am not a fan of infidelity per se, but cheating with the love of your life? That’s another matter entirely. Also, I really like rough sex and tattoos. And sex in public places. And Lee being jerked off :D. Mmmh, I guess I am easy! lol).

*Which are your favorite porny stories?

*Do you think K/L smut is vanilla?
(personally, I think so! But I am happy in the K/L vanilla-ish porn, even though some more "imaginative" stories are always appreciated ;P)

OK, so first, I totally love reading porn/kink/smut - about characters that have depth and where the kink in the relationships makes sense. ivanolix made a great post about Meta on the ways kink works in kink memes (http://ivanolix.livejournal.com/123551.html#cutid1).

*What are your favorite K/L kinks?
My kinks for K/L are different than for other pairings/groups, mostly because there's so much backstory and angst that I want that to be present in the porn. For other pairings, like my porn!ship of Gaeta/Lee, I just want hotness. For K/L my favorite kinks are probably public sex (or at least almost getting caught), rough sex (with Alpha!Lee), teasing and orgasm denial: those all seems to fit within the character context for those two.

*Which are your favorite porny stories?
Oh, my, I love many, but I'd have to put them into two categories:
1) Fics that are well-done and awesome for their intensity and angst, but don't send me to my rack:

I think it's vanilla because there is a lot of emotional content. I generally feel that kink, per se, not just porn, involves some suspension of emotion to focus on the stimulating aspect of the kink. I think kink often involves a lot of fantasy. For K/L their kink is being together - that's it. They don't need whips or pegging, just finally getting it on is kink enough. (Cuffs are necessary from time to time, of course.)

*How do you envision Lee and Kara sexual life? Rough, hard and dirty? Slow and sweet? (is that possible? *g*) Both?
I think they frak as much as possible and wherever they can. In my fantasy, they have so much attraction and passion that they can not keep their hands off of each other. And it's always mixed, sometimes hot sometimes fast sometimes very achingly slow. Mmmmm.

Canon tells me it was their only time. When I'm in a canon mood, that's fine. I prefer fanon where they frakked on EoJ (and other places nearby). Frak the Lee won't cheat bullshit. He'd cheat. It's kara. *smacks RDM*

I guess everything got much more complicated after that though, so it makes sense.

I mean logically it seems ridiculous during the fling, but....I do believe that canon meant for us to understand that they only ever had that one night together. Are K/L vanilla? Yeah, Kara and Lee are pretty vanilla in fic. A lot of BSG fandom was pretty vanilla (slash may be an exception in that) up until recently. I guess Kara and Lee were so angsty on screen people couldn't resist some fluff in fic. Trying to give them something normal? Kara and Lee weren't going to get married and have a hosue and kids and have sex three times a week. I think we all knew that. But I wish there was more kinky Kara/Lee in-character porn out there. Lee has a wild side and I'm sure Kara would love to see more of it. :-)

Kara and Lee's sex life? I think they go whole the range in fic. In the beginning it may be snatches of supply closet sex and raptor outmaking. But once they sort themselves out? (In my personal canon, this is.) I know Lee wants slow and sweet with her. Once Kara sorts herself out she probably wants that too. Aww. But other times they are short on time and well, I can see them having a quickie in the bathroom/head before the next meeting or something. :-)

New Caprica. Yes, in canon that was their only time. I can only speak in generalities because I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but yes, Kara/Lee fic is pretty vanilla. I think it's a combination of all the protracted and exaggerated pain and anguish and the really unconducive canon setting. There is no privacy, no soft surfaces, no balconies or trees or rain or even spaces that are their own. I doubt anyone brought a flogger or a swing or clamps or even personal use cuffs. Public sex is a given - they're pretty much always public when crammed in so close together, and that becomes about as hot as watching Ma and Pa get it on in the one room houses on the prairie.

As for my kinks . . . *g* you asked for it. . . I like the normal stuff, but I also like power play, spanking, outdoor sex, shaving, exhibitionism, bondage, anal, biting, limited sensory deprivation, etc., etc,. etc. There's very little I don't like (other then the obvious bodily fluid stuff that's just plain disgusting and unsanitary)if it's done well.

Alright... Made it through work with this whole idea brewing in the back of my head. Let's see:

Let's start with a quiet alpha!Lee, ie. he basically corners her and fraks her and doesn't let her fill the silence with actual words or talky-talk. When drunk!Kara asks if he's still frakking Dualla in LDYB2, I so very much wanted him to get so fed up with everything that he just did something later. Perhaps in the shower. :)

I also enjoy the potential of getting caught. Since everywhere on a battlestar is pretty much public space, that tends to work into most stories. Having to stay quiet in one rack or the other, in a storage closet that doesn't lock, sneaking around when I'm pretty sure everyone thought they were doing it when they weren't.

Also, I always enjoy a good wall!frak, whether bulkhead or shower wall. I like to suspend my belief in gravity when I read smut, and pretend that any of those positions actually work in practice. 8'D

I don't consider graphic sex to be vanilla, but call me old fashioned. Do I think K/L smut tends to have better (or any) characterization? Yes. Does emotion (or emotional baggage) equal vanilla? Nope. I've read stuff in other fandoms where you could change the names to anyone and have it work. The stuff I've read for K/L is sooo them, the stories only work as them. And anyway, unless you add a third party, this is a het pairing, which as smut goes is the vanilla of smut. So, no and yes? No.

*ahem* I mean... Hmm... Do I think about these things? A lot lately? *whistles and swings foot casually* I think of their sex life as stolen moments on the ship, so not so much with the slow and sweet. Although I think they might try to slow down sometimes, but I don't think it ever stays that way.

I can't picture Kara comfortable with "being made love to" in any tender, traditional sense (UBEX flashbacks notwithstanding, since the seconds they gave us are inconclusive on how that whole thing went). The passion between them and forced distance all day would make each time just a frantic, I've-been-waiting-all-day-to-get-you-alone frak. IMHO.

Both, absolutely. I think it all depends on timing. Fresh adrenaline rushed fraks are gonna be rough, so are the mid fight fraks. I think Lee varies between wanting it slow and wanting it dirty. Kara prefers it harder, but mostly, she just really likes frakking Lee ;)

KINK!

There's really no kink I don't like. I'm kind of a dark and twisty person, so sweet and schmoopy really doesn't do much for me. I also take issue with the idea that Lee is all "slow and tender lovemaking down by the fire" boy. I think the 'slow down'comment in Scar gets way-overinterpreted. I think he can go slow, but I also think that the boy has more kinky fetishes in that brain of his than we can possibly imagine (the straight-laced ones always have the biggest inner freak flag, and I so dig that about him. *g*)


As for the sexin....

Were they to have more than just one night together, I think they would've become masters of the full reportoire. *g*


Is K/L vanilla?.....

Someone upstream said that K/L does tend to be more vanilla possibly b/c they have so many real-deal issues that fic writers tend to cut them a break with the lovin'. I can see that. Honestly though, I get tired of sex that feels formulaic or 'already done.' I want to see something new and inventive-- even if it's just describing sex from a different perspective or using it to further the story in an intersting way. I like what sex can tell us about characters, how it shows their weaknesses and vulnerabilities, how we learn things about them and they learn things about themselves in the process. Sex is just another facet of life to describe-- it should inform the story, illuminate the characters, and move the plot along.

Oh-- and it should also be smokin'. ; P

Favorite sexytimes...

So many of the ones mentioned above. Spiraling Down is a particular favorite for the dark and twisty flavor, and I also adore Public Property for the fantastically original kink going on there. Contraventions sex-up-against-a-sliding-glass-door is brilliant.

This is trufax in my book. I also have trouble with the idea of the options being rough and dirty or slow and sweet (though both of these things certainly have there place). I'd imagine that if they ever finally got to settle down together, they'd probably be playful and joyful (see: waterhose fight) with just enough kink thrown in to mix things up.

I have to admit (anonymously) that I don't care for L/K porn. I find that reading L/K porn I lose sight of L/K - it feels like I could substitute other characters and the porn would go approx. the same- their specific character traits kinda recede into the background for me and for me that's very unsatisfying in a story. It's not a moral judgment thing it's just not my cup of tea.

All, yes. I think they would be very open to just about whatever struck their fancy or mood. And, like innibis, I can see a D/s, power exchange vib happening with them. Lee has that whole quiet Alpha thing going and Kara is so *in-your-face* I could see her really let go and releasing her need for control if she can feel safe and able to surrender that tight leash on herself.

And a kinda off topic question, but I am curious to know what you all think about this… Do you believe that Lee and Kara’s night on NuCap was their *only* time together? (because frankly, no matter what canon theoretically says, I can’t believe it!).

I don't think it's possible they weren't frakkin' all over the ship in the UB-EoJ run. Lee was way too adept at getting that flight suit off of her in the raptor for that to have been the first time and, I also agree, after losing each other and everything they'd been through - I can't imagine them stopping themselves. I think the "Lee won't cheat" thing by Kara was in reaction to the conversation in the raptor. Kara was always in the moment and plus, drugs affect you that way - you regurgitate what is top of mind. Plus, after she returned from the poopship, yup ... secksin.

I actually don't like fic that paints them that way. Again, it would be OOC and I don't gravitate to those fics at all. They don't affect me. I don't think Starbuck could be vanilla to save her life and as much as Apollo has a mile long stick up his ass, you know - you just KNOW - that underneath all those rules and regulations, there is a passionate, strong, manly, manly man lurking and waiting to be unleashed.

Definitely both. I think their passion is too much to contain though and even when they're slow and sweet, it's more like smoldering, dragged out slow and sweet.

Unfortunately, yes. This was another RDM/writer fail for me. They made the one and only frak look so ... tame. And I think it would've been anything but. I mean Lee certainly didn't "look" like he was upsetting any apple carts! It was written and unfortunately acted out in a very pedestrian way. Their first time would've been, should've been, full of fireworks, groping, panting, oh-my-gods-I've-waited-years-for-this hot sex and it was kinda ... eh. I mean, at least they showed us something, but still. The scene in the raptor on the algae planet was way hotter than the NC frak, IMHO.

I wholeheartedly, unabashedly LOVE smut *points to icon* and this is one area where I'm sometimes disappointed in BSG fandom.

Don't get me wrong, I have found some really fantastic fics, most of which are found under the smut tag on my delicious (http://delicious.com/bellaaurora_recs/smut). However, I find the fandom to be pretty damn lacking in kink, and all the kink that is there seems to be either slash or Roslin/Adama (which is great that they're having the sexytimes, but they are too much of the mom and dad figures in my mind to be okay with reading porn about them together).

The kink that I have found of Kara and Lee has been fantastic, because I think their characters are so well suited for it. Kara is clearly an adventurous woman, and I have a hard time believing she didn't own at least a few sex toys. Lee is so controlled so much of the time but clearly has a playful side, and I imagine he'd be wild if he ever let himself go (DUDE, Alpha!Lee). The tension between them and military aspect of their relationship could so easily lend themselves to really interesting explorations of power play. And clearly they have a tendency to beat up on each other to express their emotions, which I could pretty easily see coming out in a S/M fashion. No matter what though, if I had to use one word to describe their sexual relationship, it would be intense, and any really intense sexual encounter is inevitably HOT.

I definitely agree with daybreak777's assessment that so often shippers so want K/L to have their happily ever after, which in most people's minds means nice, romantic, vanilla sex. I don't think I've ever come across a longer fic that explores what their life might have been together had they ever gotten around to making a commitment that includes any kink beyond pretty mild bondage, Bee's hot, hot, hot truck!rain!angry!sex notwithstanding.

Also what is classified as kink in the BSG fandom is fairly vanilla by most kink standards. Don't get me wrong, I love the standard handcuff you to a bed, just as much as anyone, but what I would give for some more intense exploration of a farther from the norm BDSM relationship. The only really intensely K/L-only kinky fics I've read have been katiebugs's Spiraling Down, rayruz's Fancy Maneuvers (http://community.livejournal.com/tulipfic/60908.html), and Kate Andrew's Discipline (http://www.fictabulous.com/discipline.php).

In terms of my own personal preferences, I also ADORE voyeurism and masturbation fics. I'm particularly fond of sloanesomething's untitled, mutual masturbation across the bunkroom fic (http://sloanesomething.livejournal.com/169408.html), nom's Out of Reach (http://archiveofourown.org/works/81259?view_adult=true) and hackaddict's Breathing (http://hackaddict.livejournal.com/76811.html). I also really like seeing them mix it up with others in kinky ways, like technosage's Helo/Kara/Lee BDSM threesome featuring domme!Kara and sub!Helo You Like to Watch, Don't You? (http://technosage.livejournal.com/121015.html) and Lee/nuggets via Kara fic Being the CAG (http://technosage.livejournal.com/68599.html). I'm also partial to Sam/Kara/Lee(and sometimes /Dee) polyamorous fics, mainly because so much could have been fixed and so much heart break avoided. Some of these include lucyparavel's A Pilot's Tale (http://lucyparavel.livejournal.com/21527.html) (warning: ANGST and references to dubcon) and shipperfey's Approaching Zero series (http://shipperfey.livejournal.com/526793.html).

Perhaps I'm expecting a bit too much variation in interests from what is a relatively small community compared to previous fandoms I've participated in or perhaps a wealth of really kinky BSG fic exists in a secret cache somewhere (in which case, pretty please may I have the password!). And I really don't mean to disparage the vanilla smut - it is wonderful, it is plentiful and goddamn is it hot! Sometimes a girl just wants a little variety and a dom-y, dom-y Lee, that's all.
