DPP: Canon v. Fanon

Canon \ˈka-nən\-- n.  The authentic works of a writer; a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works.

Fanon \ˈfa-nən\-- n.  A term used in fanfiction to describe commonly accepted ideas among authors even if they are not actually expressed in the canon work.

So today I'm curious about fanon.  Is it supported by the source material?  How the hell did we come up with it?  Does it enrich our experience of the text and other stories?  Help or hindrance?

YOUR MISSION:
A.  Help me come up with a list of commonly accepted fanon ideas in the K/l-verse.  Here's a few to get us started:

1.  Kara and Lee are like the best pilots ever OMG.
2.  Lee and Zak's family had money.
3.  Zak was brilliant in another area other then vipers, such a raptor piloting or communications.
4.  Kara was a high-school pyramid champion.
5.  Starbuck and Apollo and famous throughout the Academy, and later after the show starts, throughout the Fleet.
6.  That there is such a thing as a D-CAG (deputy CAG).

I'm sure I've left out a bunch-- that's where I need your help.

B.  Discuss.  Are these ideas supported/not supported by canon?  How does it enrich the development of the characters as you see them?

I think that came from the actors hitting it off and saying they think Kara and Helo probably frakked a few times back in the day.

I kinda like it. They're very handsy with each other if you look at their scenes. I could see latent chemistry or chemistry that was there in the beginning of their friendship and mellowed into something else.

I'm in the "Kara and Helo didn't frak" camp. I agree with innibis that there was zero chemistry between them when it came to sex. Good friends, yes, but I almost think that's reason to support them NOT frakking. I see Kara as specifically choosing to frak guys that don't mean anything to her so there are no strings. Except of course for Lee (and I begrudgingly suppose even Sam and Leoben to a lesser extent).

Honestly I tend to think Katee has chemistry with just about everyone. I didn't realize how much I saw it between her and Tahmoh until I made a Kara/Helo vid but they touch each other a lot. Enough for me to believe they were playing it like there was something there once.

Helo's definitely the only man in her life who doesn't have that level of obsession with her though that all the rest do. And I definitely enjoy that. But I could just see it being not that big a deal between them if they hooked up early and then it just turned into a friendship somehow instead. (Because Helo wouldn't see any reason why they shouldn't be friends, even if Kara would after she frakked him and his persistence would win her over I think. He'd just keep showing up and she'd let him and soon they'd be BFFles.)

That's also the only alterna-ship for Kara that I can really enjoy writing in a non-angsty, we're just gonna be hot stuff kinda way. So I suppose I'm biased.

I also think Kara and Helo frakked at the Academy, and I don't know what people are talking about when they say they have zero chemistry. Katee has chemistry with everyone! Anyway, I like the idea that Kara and Helo slept together and that it didn't affect their friendship. I imagine it was a drunken thing and that there were never any emotional attachments involved and they probably laughed about it the next morning.

I agree that Katee has chemistry with everyone. I just think the Kara/Helo chemistry was purely friendship rather than friends with privileges.

I also have a hard time seeing any two highly sexual, fun-loving, frequently drunk people as having a long term friendship without at least one drunken hook up, especially if they were at the academy together (is this canon or just fanon?). Helo certainly seems to have a reputation as a bit of a ladykiller via Kara's comments in the mini about him always having a girl, and Kara seems like the type to enjoy sex for sex's sake. They both also seem the type to push aside not being able to be with the people they really want (Boomer for Helo and Lee for Kara) by having sex with people that they don't have a strong romantic interest in (Helo's aforementioned girl and Baltar/early Sam).
