[identity profile] kdbleu.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] no_takebacks
I’ve noticed a few new faces, er you know what I mean, posting here at [livejournal.com profile] no_takebacks so I thought it was time for a quick friending/introduction meme. So here goes:

Name/Callsign:
Age/Location (if you want):
When did you know Kara&Lee were you ship?
Favorite other character(s):
Favorite episodes/scenes:
Next best ship:
Favorite book, movie and song:
Anything else you'd like to share?

I would also like to introduce my co-host for the Pigeon. I don’t know how I missed him during [livejournal.com profile] taragel recent things that will always be linked to BSG post because I cannot take pigeons seriously anymore. As it turns out, as the mother of small children, I end smirking a lot at the Pigeon stories of Mo Willems because he’s kind of a super annoying pigeon who wants to drive a bus and eat hotdogs and such.

Hi!

Oh boy, I could gush about Ondaatje's prose for ages. There's a particular part in the English patient's retelling of his story where he compares man's need to own and conquer the desert territories to the possessive impulses of love. It's just stunning. Ever since I read it I've wanted to travel across North Africa- but I think the latest events in the Libya and Tunisia have put that trip back by quite a few years.

This meet and greet has been a great idea- good to know there's another Australian out there in the fandom somewhere.

There are some really sublime passages in that book. I think I remember the one you're talking about. He writes so evocatively, you can smell it. Ever since I read it I wanted to travel across N Africa, too. Although I can't remember a time when I didn't want to go to Morroco ... which now that I think about it, may have been the fault of Casablanca. So I guess ... start in Morroco, go east, hang a left somewhere around Israel or Jordan, and wash up in Turkey? And then loop around the Aegean? Yeah, this trip isn't happening any time soon, is it? Argh, there are just so many places I want to go!

Have you read any of his other books?

Just the other one that features the Caravaggio and Hana characters, pre-English Patient. I think it was called In the Skin of the Lion? It was good, but not as brilliant as The English Patient in my mind.

As for overseas holidays- that is pretty much exactly what I had planned but in reverse! I want to start in Istanbul, head south, take a westerly turn at Petra in Jordan, head across Egypt and into the Mahgreb, check out Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, skip over Gibraltar and finish at the Alhambra. It's like THE big trip I HAVE to make before I die. I'm just really hoping the political situation in those countries calms down before I'm too old to make a journey like that.

Ooh, the Alhambra! *adds to the list* (Speaking of which, have you ever seen North & South?)

Yeah, I think The English Patient is one of those books where all the elements align in some irrepeatable alchemy. Amazing when it happens, but leaves all the rest of the stuff the author does a little flat. :/
