Apologies if some of you aren't Harry Potter fans, but seeing as part one of Deathly Hallows hits the US tomorrow and almost everyone is talking about it, I thought this would be a fitting day to don the Hogwarts Galactic Fleet Academy Sorting Hat (Sorting...helmet?)
For those not magically initiated, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has a rather controversial way of sorting students into houses, in which students put on a very old stinky talking hat, the hat tells them based on personality traits (or other arbitrary factors) what house they should live in, thus determining their entire social life both throughout their schooling but probably during their adult lives, all in a matter of seconds. I have a feeling spunky young Kara would tell Dumbledore this is major B.S., but that's the way it is.
The houses are these:
Gryffindor, valuing courage, bravery, loyalty, nerve and chivalry.
Ravenclaw, valuing intelligence, creativity, learning, and wit.
Hufflepuff, valuing hard work, tolerance, loyalty, and fair play.
And Slytherin house values ambition, cunning, leadership, resourcefulness (bonus points if you have pure wizard blood).
Feel free to discuss away in comments how much Kara would kick ass at Quidditch, what Lee's best subject at Hogwarts would be, etc. But EVERYONE LOVES A POLL, so:

Date: 2010-11-18 11:19 am (UTC)Lee is a little more difficult, he has traits of Gryffindor as well as Hufflepuff. I could go either way here.
I'm interested in the other BSG characters here too. I was going to put Roslin in Hufflepuff then I thought more and... no, she's a Slytherin.
Gaius is surprisingly more Ravenclaw than Slytherin.
Helo is totally Hufflepuff but a little bit Gryffindor.
Sam I would put in Gryffindor.
Bill's a Gryffindor to Roslin's Slytherin. They balance nicely.

Date: 2010-11-18 11:30 am (UTC)Also re: Baltar- I'm inclined to go with Slytherin, despite his prodigious intellect. He's got those fundamental flaws in his character that make him very susceptible to flattery and can be easily lured in by ambition. Just because he's smart doesn't give him a free pass to Ravenclaw (just think, Hermione is super smart, but in Gryffindor).

Date: 2010-11-18 12:21 pm (UTC)Kara is so very Gryffindor to me. She's got major balls, and is very motivated by loyalty where Lee is more driven by ideology.
I like the idea that the Adamas would be a long-running pureblood family and Kara would be a half-blood with a human father.

Date: 2010-11-18 09:22 pm (UTC)I don't know about dim. Not cutting intelligence, but not dim.
But anyways, I agree that Hufflepuff is not a fit I could ever see for Lee. They're so affable. He's so... prickly.
Anyways.

Date: 2010-11-18 09:55 pm (UTC)And yes, terribly goodnatured and not prickly!

Date: 2010-11-18 02:21 pm (UTC)We also thought about the flaws inherent to the particular Houses, as well as their traditional virtues. Though not everyone would agree, we thought the flaws of Gryffindor are recklessness and explosive temper, the flaws of Ravenclaw are a certain passivity and abstractedness, the flaws of Hufflepuff are a tendency to be followers rather than leaders, and the flaws of Slytherin are ruthlessness and amorality.
Given that, we sorted Lee into Ravenclaw (intelligent, principled, decides issues based on ideas rather than personal allegiances, has the confidence to lead but sometimes deals with problems too passively) and Kara into Gryffindor (courageous, a born leader, reckless, tempermental, most comfortable in the midst of the action).
And for the record we put:
Bill in Gryffindor
Roslin in Slytherin
Tigh in Hufflepuff
Baltar in Ravenclaw
Helo in Hufflepuff
Tyrol in Gryffindor
Leoben in Ravenclaw (!! "In that case, I would say that a circle has no ending." / "Nicely phrased.")
Six in Gryffindor
Kat in Gryffindor
Hot Dog in Hufflepuff FTW!!

Date: 2010-11-18 03:02 pm (UTC)My personal thoughts was that Lee (like Hermione) and Kara would both be Gyffindor, but others argued passionately that Lee was a Ravenclaw.

Date: 2010-11-18 03:23 pm (UTC)I agree, Kara would be like WTF with this stupid hat. She's never been easy to pigeonhole. It would be fun to see the mental conversation between Kara and the Sorting Hat! Hmmm, gotta run to work or I might have made a pass at that...

Date: 2010-11-18 05:20 pm (UTC)Before last night I don't think I ever sat and watched one of the movies straight through, I watched the first one last night. I'm planning on watching the 2nd one tonight. If I keep liking them I'll wind up watching them all.
Harry Potter is not something that appeals to me. I always thought it was a kid's thing. I've always been more of a scifi guy then fantasy.
Last night showed me how well they were made, and I decided as an open minded guy to give them a chance. When you are a fan of scifi you need to be open minded, so I'm going to give them a chance. The books and movies are such a big thing it's only fair to at least give the movies a chance.
Anyway I watch the first from beg to end and the next day here's a Harry Potter topic lol. What are the odds? lol

Date: 2010-11-18 09:30 pm (UTC)Yes, the books are "juvenile" fiction, but all that really means is that it's rated PG, and maybe doesn't tackle sexuality so much. It's well-written and complex and totally enjoyable for adults, too. Once you get past the first couple of chapters. (There's a lot of introductory material to slog through in the books that takes less time in the movies, I think.)

Date: 2010-11-18 10:05 pm (UTC)Anyway, I couldn't begin to tell you which movies you'd probably like best, cause the opinions are all over the place. A lot of people think they get better with every movie, others thinks they keep getting worse.

Date: 2010-11-18 05:43 pm (UTC)I would have to put both L&K into Gryffindor. Kara is obviously Gryffindor and don't have to explain that choice at all.
"Gryffindor values courage, bravery, loyalty, nerve and chivalry"
I've been watching Caprica and the above fits the Adama family.
Lee is courageous and brave. Do I need to defend these points? lol. He may disagree with his father, but he's loyal to him. This is why he left the military when his father questioned his loyalty and integrity.
Lee has nerve. All I have to say is his Luke Skywalker impression in HoG lol. :)
chivalry - 1.the combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, esp courage, honor, justice, and a readiness to help the weak
This definition fits Lee like a glove. :)

Date: 2010-11-18 09:01 pm (UTC)And, er, Lee in Hufflepuff? I always thought of them as being a bit on the dim side, so that really doesn't work for me...
Kara without the shadow of a doubt is Gryffindor...

Date: 2010-11-19 12:26 am (UTC)Kara of course was a Gryffindor as I think she has both the positive and negative aspects of being in Gryffindor.
