Apologies if some of you aren't Harry Potter fans, but seeing as part one of Deathly Hallows hits the US tomorrow and almost everyone is talking about it, I thought this would be a fitting day to don the Hogwarts Galactic Fleet Academy Sorting Hat (Sorting...helmet?)

For those not magically initiated, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has a rather controversial way of sorting students into houses, in which students put on a very old stinky talking hat, the hat tells them based on personality traits (or other arbitrary factors) what house they should live in, thus determining their entire social life both throughout their schooling but probably during their adult lives, all in a matter of seconds. I have a feeling spunky young Kara would tell Dumbledore this is major B.S., but that's the way it is.

The houses are these:

Gryffindor, valuing courage, bravery, loyalty, nerve and chivalry.
Ravenclaw, valuing intelligence, creativity, learning, and wit.
Hufflepuff, valuing hard work, tolerance, loyalty, and fair play.
And Slytherin house values ambition, cunning, leadership, resourcefulness (bonus points if you have pure wizard blood).

Feel free to discuss away in comments how much Kara would kick ass at Quidditch, what Lee's best subject at Hogwarts would be, etc. But EVERYONE LOVES A POLL, so:

Ha! Like Kara could be anything but Gryffindor! Though she has creativity and wit like a Ravenclaw - but she's so very dominantly brave (and reckless!) that it has to win out.

Lee is a little more difficult, he has traits of Gryffindor as well as Hufflepuff. I could go either way here.

I'm interested in the other BSG characters here too. I was going to put Roslin in Hufflepuff then I thought more and... no, she's a Slytherin.
Gaius is surprisingly more Ravenclaw than Slytherin.
Helo is totally Hufflepuff but a little bit Gryffindor.
Sam I would put in Gryffindor.
Bill's a Gryffindor to Roslin's Slytherin. They balance nicely.

Kara's artsy side is definitely more Ravenclaw that Gryffindor, people! You know that hat tends to pick up on random stuff and put people in weird places. :)

Kara's got the nerve for Gryffindor, but I'm not sure if you could call her chivalrous at all. She's a bit more of a modern hero than that I would say. And her non-linear problem solving (I'm so over seeing 'out of the box' used time and time again, I had to think up a new phrase :p) is definitely more Ravenclaw...

Also re: Baltar- I'm inclined to go with Slytherin, despite his prodigious intellect. He's got those fundamental flaws in his character that make him very susceptible to flattery and can be easily lured in by ambition. Just because he's smart doesn't give him a free pass to Ravenclaw (just think, Hermione is super smart, but in Gryffindor).

Hee! My husband and I played this game with BSG long ago, and we feel that "Sometimes a Great Notion" is the perfect personality test-case episode to see how the different "houses" react to disaster :)

We also thought about the flaws inherent to the particular Houses, as well as their traditional virtues. Though not everyone would agree, we thought the flaws of Gryffindor are recklessness and explosive temper, the flaws of Ravenclaw are a certain passivity and abstractedness, the flaws of Hufflepuff are a tendency to be followers rather than leaders, and the flaws of Slytherin are ruthlessness and amorality.

Given that, we sorted Lee into Ravenclaw (intelligent, principled, decides issues based on ideas rather than personal allegiances, has the confidence to lead but sometimes deals with problems too passively) and Kara into Gryffindor (courageous, a born leader, reckless, tempermental, most comfortable in the midst of the action).

And for the record we put:

Bill in Gryffindor
Roslin in Slytherin
Tigh in Hufflepuff
Baltar in Ravenclaw
Helo in Hufflepuff
Tyrol in Gryffindor
Leoben in Ravenclaw (!! "In that case, I would say that a circle has no ending." / "Nicely phrased.")
Six in Gryffindor
Kat in Gryffindor
Hot Dog in Hufflepuff FTW!!

When we did this a while back, we put only the "younger generation" in classes and made Bill, Tigh, Laura etc. be professors.

My personal thoughts was that Lee (like Hermione) and Kara would both be Gyffindor, but others argued passionately that Lee was a Ravenclaw.

If Ron Weasley can be a Gryffindor, than Lee has to be for the same reasons, his courage, loyalty & leadership out weigh all the other traits.

I agree, Kara would be like WTF with this stupid hat. She's never been easy to pigeonhole. It would be fun to see the mental conversation between Kara and the Sorting Hat! Hmmm, gotta run to work or I might have made a pass at that...

Ok this is just weird to me lol. This week the Biography channel has been doing specials about the movies, about the actors, how it was made, music, etc. Made me decide to watch all the movies.

Before last night I don't think I ever sat and watched one of the movies straight through, I watched the first one last night. I'm planning on watching the 2nd one tonight. If I keep liking them I'll wind up watching them all.

Harry Potter is not something that appeals to me. I always thought it was a kid's thing. I've always been more of a scifi guy then fantasy.

Last night showed me how well they were made, and I decided as an open minded guy to give them a chance. When you are a fan of scifi you need to be open minded, so I'm going to give them a chance. The books and movies are such a big thing it's only fair to at least give the movies a chance.

Anyway I watch the first from beg to end and the next day here's a Harry Potter topic lol. What are the odds? lol

From my limited knowledge of the topic, it seems the purest good faction is Gryffindor and the purest evil faction is Slitherian. No idea where the other two fall.

I would have to put both L&K into Gryffindor. Kara is obviously Gryffindor and don't have to explain that choice at all.

"Gryffindor values courage, bravery, loyalty, nerve and chivalry"

I've been watching Caprica and the above fits the Adama family.

Lee is courageous and brave. Do I need to defend these points? lol. He may disagree with his father, but he's loyal to him. This is why he left the military when his father questioned his loyalty and integrity.

Lee has nerve. All I have to say is his Luke Skywalker impression in HoG lol. :)

chivalry - 1.the combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, esp courage, honor, justice, and a readiness to help the weak

This definition fits Lee like a glove. :)

All I have to say is that the hat would have to know these two are destined to be together...and work best when together...so they must be in the same house. I don't know enough HP to decide which house, but where one goes, the other must also go. That is all. (Unfortunately real life calls today.)

Lee has traits of Ravenclaw, definitely, but the heart of a Gryffindor (I can imagine the hat umming and aahing on his head, but the hero/bravery/loyalty/chivalry thing is underniable).

And, er, Lee in Hufflepuff? I always thought of them as being a bit on the dim side, so that really doesn't work for me...

Kara without the shadow of a doubt is Gryffindor...

I would say Lee could be Ravenclaw at a push, but no way is he Hufflepuff - I've always see them as good hearted and diligent and a bit dim - and if there's one thing Lee isn't, it's dim!

Hee - look at us arguing about a sorting hat...

I don't know about dim. Not cutting intelligence, but not dim.

But anyways, I agree that Hufflepuff is not a fit I could ever see for Lee. They're so affable. He's so... prickly.

Anyways.

The books are so much better than the movies. But watch the movies first.

Yes, the books are "juvenile" fiction, but all that really means is that it's rated PG, and maybe doesn't tackle sexuality so much. It's well-written and complex and totally enjoyable for adults, too. Once you get past the first couple of chapters. (There's a lot of introductory material to slog through in the books that takes less time in the movies, I think.)

Let's agree on not cutting intelligence... ;)

And yes, terribly goodnatured and not prickly!

Well call it personal - I could never take Hufflepuff very seriously, and Lee is so damn serious.. it just feels completely off key to me. I'd almost see him in Slytherin better than Hufflepuff... (ooh, a Dark!Lee HP AU... now that would be fun...;)

I put Lee in Ravenclaw because I felt that the logical intelligent part of Lee's brain is often what kicks in first, he in my opinion is more of a sit back and wait kind of guy to Kara's running into a burning building kind of attitude.
Kara of course was a Gryffindor as I think she has both the positive and negative aspects of being in Gryffindor.

Neville really should have been a hufflepuff.

Exactly!

Although he is phenomenally brave, so I can see why he made Gryffindor...

And there is that whole "there but for the grace of God go I" thing he has with Harry...where he was almost the one picked or whatever. (I thought that was a really intriguing throwaway plot thread actually, and wish there'd been more done with it.)

ah, throwaway plot threads, how they annoy me sometimes... (let's not talk about bsg, shall we?)

xx

But yes, absolutely. Poor little Nev.
