Today on DPP, mysticism and BSG.
Obviously, the show presents its own views on mysticism, via the monotheism/polytheism dichotomy, Baltar's visions, Kara's destiny... And through simpler things like having the Twelve Colonies named for the signs of the zodiac.

With that in mind, where do you think Kara and Lee fall in the zodiac as we know it? The Colonial religion embraces some form of scrying in the people of Oracles, what about tarot and forms of scrying that are used today? Is there a particular card or rune that seems like it fits one of our pilots specifically?

Under the cut, the major arcana cards for a BSG tarot deck I've been working on with sparklegirl79 and a description of an interesting confluence of BSG and tarot in the context of RP.





At this point in this RP game, Kara was between "Scar" and "Sacrifice" canonically. The person playing Tower (here depicted as Dean Stockwell, this should not make you think of Cavil there is no connection) used a tarot computer program to do an actual reading based on cards selected by the person playing Kara. The person playing Tower had never seen BSG and had no knowledge of any events in Kara's life. Here is the reading

Well, I know nothing about Tarot, but I just wanted to say those are beautifully designed cards you have there. I particularly like Lee as Temperance, I must say :)

I've never paid attention to astrology either, but I decided to randomly assign Lee to Capricorn because he hails from Caprica. The symbol is apparently a goat ("why not think of it as a goat? That'll work, right?"), and it's a "cardinal earth sign." These basic Caprican personality attributes were listed on a zodiac website, and they made me smile:

Positive Traits

• Practical and prudent
• Ambitious and disciplined
• Patient and careful
• Humorous and reserved

Negative Traits

• Pessimistic and fatalistic
• Miserly and grudging


Capricorn Likes: simple food, antiques, history, duties and responsibilities, not being pressured by others, having plenty of unconditional love(!), lots of personal privacy, new books, and expensive gemstones(?).

Capricorn Dislikes: untidiness and disorder of all kinds, being teased(!), surprises, new ideas, loneliness, being made to feel useless or incompetent, and being embarrassed in public.

A typical Capricorn has good organizational skills, is neat and tidy, has hardheaded practicality. You have strong work ethic, materialistic tendencies, a conservative streak, conventionality and great respect for authority. You are ambitious, serious and dedicated to duty. You are self-disciplined, responsible and practical but at times, you can wallow in self-pity. Your reasoning ability is excellent and has strong sense of purpose and direction.

A Capricorn may appear somber and reserved in their dealings with others, but once they give their trust, they are a loyal and steadfast friend. Socially oriented, you are willing to work hard for anything you want, and your self-esteem is extremely important to you. You are bright and quick. You are good in detail as well as in insight and conceptual formulation. You are materialistic rather than philosophical(?). You are capable of falling in love for its own pleasure but love alone will not motivate you to marriage. To you marriage serves a social design.

All in all, an interesting character sketch, and I think Lee fits in with a lot of this type. Of course, Kara is also supposed to be from Caprica, and this fits her not at all. Ah, well :)

I only know a little about astrology, but I would think Lee might be a Virgo (analytical, exacting) with a Leo (pride, leadership) rising sign or something like that. Kara...maybe Cancer (heh! emotional but moody) with a Leo (pride, aggression) or Sagitarrius (social, partyloving)rising sign? Or maybe Taurus (stubborn) in the background for both of them. Heh.

In real life Jamie and Katee are both Aries I believe.

Inspired to make Cards

I'm procrastinating about getting started on both work and my university assignments so I decided to make cards instead.

Kara Thrace would be an Aries. I'm just going to quote a description for it: "Aries personalities function is to be the initiator, the one who gets things started... Aries personalities are to get things moving. The contributions all the other signs have to offer depend on someone providing the initial impulse. Aries is a fire sign, and fire has to do with inspiration and imagination. [Their] aim is to bring these qualities into life and act on them."

Lee Adama would be a Libra (and of course I'm biased in this opinion, as he and I would get to party together then). Again, I'm just going to quote someone else's description: "The goal for Libra is to witness the importance of co-operation and harmony in human life. Libra is represented by a pair of scales - the only sign to be represented by an inanimate object. This says something about the Libra objective - to be fair and balanced in everything in a detached way - it is an air sign and therefore seeks an ideal. At its best, Libra can view complex situations, maybe emotionally highly charged ones, and come to a balanced view based on a fair consideration of all the options... Libra always seeks to restore balance.

Loved the cards. I'm not into astrology but the descriptions match Kara and Lee perfectly. Great job! :)
