Following the BSG finale, the poof got a lot of attention, and it still does. It's one of those things that everyone has an opinion on. But what about that pigeon? What the frak was that? Did you find it deeply symbolic or just a big feathered load of fail? Here's a place to discuss that bird. Feel free to rant, rave, poke fun, and make sure to bust out those pigeon icons and rec those pigeon crack!fics.

OMG, the pigeon. So much fail.

Have you seen the con video of Jamie and James, where they're asked how they felt about their endings, and Jamie goes off about how James got fawned over by gorgeous women and he got a broom and a pigeon? So funny.

But the fail was kinda symbolic. Whether or not RDM admits it, the pigeon did to him exactly what Kara did. As long as he tried to catch her or chase her away, he couldn't get rid of her. And then when he finally accepted that he was just going to have to let her stay... She left.

Fail, indeed.

On the bright side, it spawned some fabulously cracky icons and macros (none of which I have saved or bookmarked, sadly)

Well, I think the pigeon symbolized Lee's fate (or perhaps the indifference of a cruel god). Just when he thought everything was going to be OK, someone or something always crapped all over him :D

(Mostly I'm commenting so I can use my brilliant pigeon icon which ALWAYS makes me laugh!)

The pigeon never made any sense to me. When I first saw that scene I was like "WTF?" and then completely ignored that scene. I had completely forgotten it till I came across you guys and I saw that people actually analysed it and discussed everything it could possibly mean or represent. I felt really stupid for not being able to read anything at all there. (And I still do, I guess. lol). I find it a lot of fun to read other people's interpretation, though.

Oh the pigeon of fail!!!

I know everyone from the cast especially Jamie has said that it was symbolic. I'm still waiting on what that was.

The pigeon never made any sense, EVER!!! When I first was watching it, I just thought it was Lee wasted and chasing a pigeon but then they were comparing it to his relationship with Kara. WTF???

I mean I suppose I can see it, Kara as a free spirit and never wanting to be tied down and I agree with what [profile] jeneviverose said above.

Pigeon = TOTAL FAIL!

OMG. Pigeon definitely = Total FAIL.

You know I always felt that if they really were trying to use that damn bird as some sort of symbol, they could've picked something better than a dirty disgusting pigeon. To me those birds are nothing but pseudo rats with wings.

There's a hilarious, hilarious fic out there where Lee actually falls in love with the pigeon after the poof and tries to convince everyone that it's his true love, etc.

There's another one where Kara shows up after Lee's been trekking around for a while accompanied by the pigeon (which he of course, sees as some sort of divine guide) and she ends up shooting it telling Lee that she's hungry and the damn thing is just dinner.

Gotta go find the links for those two. I'll come back and post them, unless someone already has them and can share.

The pigeon was a fantastic symbol. I am still impressed at how beautifully adept RDM & Co. was at handling the pigeon. It could have gone so badly, but in their capable hands? Perfection.

Also, Moondoe totally followed Lee to Earth and they set up shop together in a cabin. Their love is epic. Way more so than Pilots pssh.

And bitches, please. You know you ship Lee/Pigeon like a house on fire. Don't front.

Okay everyone. I found the link to the wacky story of Lee's love affair with Moondoe the Pigeon. It's [livejournal.com profile] pali67's fantastic crack fic:

Now, I'm one of those peculiar people who didn't particularly mind the poof - I can sort of see why a happy end with lots of pilot babies wasn't an option, given how much Kara especially had been through, and at least they got a kind-of good-bye. But for a series so big on symbols, carefully built up through a number of episodes and even seasons, my gripes with the pigeon in particular is that it came out of nowhere. There were no comments planted early on 'hey, remember when you chased that stupid pigeon and crashed your house?', no pigeon paintings (sorry, I'm addicted to alliteration), no hints of either of them having a special affinity or liking for pigeons - I can't think of any bird less like Kara, in fact!

Now, I suppose you could say that no, there wouldn't have been any discussion of the first instalment of the pigeon saga as it was symbolic of Lee's very private struggle with his feelings, not properly understood or spelled out even to himself that early on, but... Nah. Someone else will have to feed that particular pigeon.
