DPP: Canon v. Fanon

Canon \ˈka-nən\-- n.  The authentic works of a writer; a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works.

Fanon \ˈfa-nən\-- n.  A term used in fanfiction to describe commonly accepted ideas among authors even if they are not actually expressed in the canon work.

So today I'm curious about fanon.  Is it supported by the source material?  How the hell did we come up with it?  Does it enrich our experience of the text and other stories?  Help or hindrance?

YOUR MISSION:
A.  Help me come up with a list of commonly accepted fanon ideas in the K/l-verse.  Here's a few to get us started:

1.  Kara and Lee are like the best pilots ever OMG.
2.  Lee and Zak's family had money.
3.  Zak was brilliant in another area other then vipers, such a raptor piloting or communications.
4.  Kara was a high-school pyramid champion.
5.  Starbuck and Apollo and famous throughout the Academy, and later after the show starts, throughout the Fleet.
6.  That there is such a thing as a D-CAG (deputy CAG).

I'm sure I've left out a bunch-- that's where I need your help.

B.  Discuss.  Are these ideas supported/not supported by canon?  How does it enrich the development of the characters as you see them?

Great topic, Bee!

I think many of the ones I was think about have been mentioned, the only other that comes to mind is:

Lee and Kara hung out alot (bars and such) after they met through Zak; like when Zak was away on some training or in classes.

As far as I know this was never confirmed on canon.

That's a good one. I don't think we've got any evidence that ever happened-- other than the pic with all three of them. SO they must have hung out socially at least once after the DB flashback.

I mean it makes sense if we take the table frak at its value. It would be akward hanging out and Lee does look akward in the pic.

Well, I was about to add another one but I'll comment here:

Kara was in hack a lot and Lee knew about it.

Doesn't he make a comment when he finds her in hack in the mini about it being familiar? I mean he could know from Zak but he seems to know her really, really well there. How many people see you so often behind bars? Especially if you didn't train together.

I think they hung out the three of them. Lee looks too sad in the picture and Kara too sad that he might be dead in the mini. That can't be just from one or two meetings.

I concur.

Their scenes in the mini really confirm an earlier friendship for me. Her sadness at his death and his comment about hack do not speak of even a casual friendship. Also, I can't imagine anyone other than a close friend would be mad at him for not reconciling with his father.

Also, part of me wonders if maybe their surprised look in the DB flashbacks may not be an indication of instant attraction, but of recognition perhaps from a casual encounter/the academy/etc. Even introducing themselves to each other has a bit of a tongue in cheek quality that makes me go hmmm and wonder if they did know each other from before. Perhaps it's just my wishful thinking and fanwanking, though.

Hey, they kind fanwanked that meeting so why can't we? I mean they wrote that scene but it was weird. Even if they met that way, I think they all hung out together after at times. Yeah, it was awkward after almost!tablesex but Lee looks like he's pining in the pic and Kara has some pining as she prays for him. Why is his part of the pic all folded like that? It would be a lot of emotion on a single meeting.

My impression from the mini is that they knew each other really, really well, and that both of them had feelings for each other (well, I do believe they were (very) repressedly in love already). I'd even go that far to say that Kara was aware of her feelings for Lee --the folded pic, hello?--, and Lee spent the whole S1 in denial mode. So in the canon in my head, after the table mess they decided not to bring out the issue never again and, even though it might have been really awkward at first, they ended up falling into an easy camaraderie and eventually became real friends.

(and I am loving the idea that they had actually met before the flashbacks. As you were (very wisely) pointing out, if they fanwanked and retconned everything, why can't we? :D)

The folded pic is a serious hello. Pining! I don't know how conscious she was because Leegasm really woke her up. But she privately unfolded that part of the picture at times. Lee was special to her even if she didn't know how much. They all totes hung out. :-)

Exactly. :-) I actually like fanon. We can make a whole world for these kids and some fanwanking and fanfic is much better executed than some of the actual show writing. I say we get to keep it. :-)

The conversation in the mini does give the impression that they knew each other. But I sometimes wonder if when Zak was not around she would call Lee to bail her out when she got in trouble.

May be it was more than a few meetings but we never knew how long Kara and Zak had been together. If it was a long time, then I can see them going to the beach and hanging out for the summer together.

Yes! I'm sure there was a fic about this once. Can't remember which but if there isn't there certainly should be. But I seem to remember Lee checking Kara out in a bikini . . . Now I'm forgetting the important things. Fics!

I agree many things from that flashback just don't line up with what we know.

I think the fic you are talking about is shefcat Tiny Vessels. The one where they go to the beach, Zak falls asleep and Lee shows Kara a really gorgeous place that only Lee knows about?
