BSG as a show threw many, many curveballs our way. But what I'm curious about today, Shipper Nation, is whether anything you learned about Kara or Lee - not plot developments, but any part of their backstory/background information - surprised you? And how did it make you feel? Did the surprise make sense or not?

For instance, I remember being very surprised in the miniseries that Kara was religious, and later that she and Zak had been engaged and not just dating. And later, that Lee's mother had been emotionally abusive. But what about you?

pilots can't believe what they've just been told about themselves

It's hard for me to say, because I watched the entire thing after it had aired, so I didn't have a week between each episode to think about things. I think I just sort of took everything for granted and the picture of the show and characters I have is that we got at the end.

I will say, it through me for a loop when Lee quit the military, though I've come to like and accept it, it definitely did surprise me. I was also surprised that Kara died, though when she did, I was sure she'd come back.

Because it is the black hole of OOC and suck I tend to ignore the events of "Black Market", but I was surprised - not by Lee's unwillingness to have kids, but his desertion of what's-her-name. Lee has always been shown as the guy who sticks out the situation no matter what (even after he should have left), so to see him just walk away from something...

But why couldn't they go with a good Mary Sue fantasy?

(thinks of several early fics that were boarder-line MS, all of which were more interesting then BM)

not by Lee's unwillingness to have kids,

IDK, I didn't see that particular episode in a while but I didn't got that vibe. I got more the vibe that we usually get in fics from Kara - like "I don't know what to say" or "I don't know if I'm ready to be a parent" or something like that. Maybe because I live surrounded by men I tent to see their POV so I guess that just like women need time to process this type of news men need it to. And the episode is not giving us enough information to see if it was a final decision on his part or just a temporary indecision/ bad reaction to the news.

in the craziness that was BM personally I was more surprised by the fact that the writers let him shoot Phelan. because usually the good-guys in the stories are not doing stuff like that.

how stupid and OOC this episode was.

Oh yes. It's like one of those Alternative Universe episodes that some series are so in love with.

I know there are exceptions (and I do like oh so much some of them) but those are guys that are known to bend the rules. For example if Kara would have made that kind of a thing I would not been surprised at all. Maybe good-guys wasn't the best expression to use. Follow-rulers might be closer to what I have in mind.

Hmmm, what surprised me? in the series as a whole I was surprised by stuff (like Tory being part of the Final Five and stuff and Dee killing herself) but from Kara and Lee? Not so much and not because they were predictable or something but because they were not. and from somebody unpredictable you kind of expect the unexpected. it was pretty clear from the beginning that they are not the typical characters so I sort of went with it.

Again, I was more surprised by the reaction of some characters to some of the things that Kara or Lee did or said. But I was surprised by the table. Because that seems inconsistent with what we know about them. I always prefer the deleted scene where Kara tells Lee that he will never leave the military and he says something about the fact that they know each-other for 1 hour and she's giving that kind of a verdict. THAT scene says more to me about their connection that the craziness of what went on-air.

I think Kara writing poetry REALLY surprised me (far more than the artwork--which was very abstract and fit her persona well). That poem on the wall in the apartment... I don't know.

And I also thought her putting her hand on the glass at the end of Flesh and Bone was surprising and out of character, even though they tried hard to make the Leoben connection with religion to the point of beating you over the head with it. I can't believe at that stage in the series she could ever get that sympathetic to a cylon that she had that kind of remorse about them dying under ANY circumstances (not going to heaven, not resurrecting whatever). I just can't.

Knowing now that Tauron men get tattoos, in retrospect, I find it surprising that Lee doesn't seem to have any (and neither does Bill, but we don't see him nearly nakey like we do with Lee).

I was very surprised by the table and was actually quite upset about it as i thought it was RDM's way of shouting 'see, this is why they were doomed!'. It still upsets me.
