DPP: BSG Without Pilots

Hello, Shipper Nation, and welcome to this week's DPP!

Today's question is one that I suspect very few of us (self included) like to think about too often, or at all: what if there were no pilots?

BSG is a big show, with a massive cast to match. Our pilots, much as we love them and important as they were, were just two of those, and their story was one of many (still a big part of it, though). But what if they hadn't been part of the cast at all? What would that show have been like? I mean, think of a miniseries without this, for starters:




I guess the flipside of the question is, what do you think pilots brought to the show, and the story, that made them - and the show, with them - so special? And would you have taken an interest in BSG if they hadn't existed?

Pilots definitely break the ship-o-meter for me. And even reading fic of other couples I find interesting I'm still always left kinda 'meh.' Maybe it just goes to needing resolution that we never got onscreen, but I'd like to think it's something more. I'd like to think it's because there's something speshul about our peeps. :)

The lack of closure is part of it but there’s definitely more… I mean, I was crazy about them a while before the show ended. The fact that we didn’t have a proper resolution only makes them more… addictive? I don't know. To me they are like a wound that will never properly heal (and honestly? I kind of like that).

I agree. They got under my skin right from the miniseries, and just devastated me more and more with each season - pilots for me were an obsession long before I figured out that their end wasn't a happy one.

The tragedy of their non-resolution isn't why I love them, but it certainly is a big part of why I can never let them go.
