The rules of Bee!Club are simple...


The FIRST rule of Bee!Club is... we don’t talk about Bee!Club.
No wait---that’s not right.  Of course we talk.  Talking is what we do, yo.  Talk it up in the comments---bring me your thinky thoughts, your gifs, your crack, bring your ficlets and drabbles and bears oh my!  I wants it all.  The DPP is all about the conversation.

Shit!  That’s not right either.  Of course we talk, and second only to talking about the Topic ‘O The Day (tm) is talking to each other.  I have met some of my very bestest of buds by straying over into someone else’s convo and setting up camp.  It’s fun!  It’s ridiculous!  You might find the COOLEST KIDZ EVAR!  Just give it a whirl.  The worst thing you can do this week is stay in your own little  sandbox comment thread and never venture out.  I’ll bring the punch and pie.  All you gotta do is show up. *g*

Here’s the deal:

1.  You rec three fics.

2.  You tell us WHY you recc’d those fics.  
Greatest Story Ever Told? Sentimental favorite?  Has the greatest alpha!Lee or badass Kara imaginable?  Made you see the monumental rightness of babyfic?  Got you hooked on the hawtness?  Best wallsex, hate!sex, angsty!sex, sweet!sex, crazy!bad!wrong!dirty!sex ever? Pre-mini perfection or post-poof healing?  Canon, AU, no-U?  WHAT-EV-ER.  But you have to tell us why you love it.  (B/c we peeps is nosy and we wants to know.)

3.  Here’s the twist:  To make this a true rec-o-rama and avoid the same golden oldies cropping up (not that we don’t love ‘em but they’re classics for a reason, y’all), if a story’s already been recc’ed, you cannot rec it again-- you’ve got to come up with new fics to rec.  (Of course, if you see a story you love crop up in the comments feel free to squee about it until Bee calls last round and kicks your drunk ass out of this bar for the evening till the cows come home.)

It’s doesn’t have to be old-- it doesn’t have to be a classic.  Just tell me what’s struck you lately.  What have you been reading that makes you smile?

4.  Here’s where it gets awesome-- feel free to play multiple times.  I want this to be the rec post to end all rec posts, full of holiday fun and cheer and fantastic reading material.  So please---come back for seconds, m’kay?

Got it?  Sweet.  Here are three to get us started:

1.  Possibility: Different by mystic83
SO much love for this story, y’all.  I first discovered it when I was new to the show and a total lurker!bee and had only barely heard of fannish things (What is this fan fiction you speak of?  What?  AU?  What?)  And I stumbled across this little gem that imagines a world where the attacks never happened and K/L get to work their shit out over the course of a lovely little weekend.  It just made my heart go pity-pat in all the right ways and sealed the deal as far as my love of fic goes.  From that moment on, I was like  YES.  MOAR.  PLS.

2.  Kara Thrace’sTerrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Special Destiny by taragel
I love this story for two reasons-- one, it was the first tfic I ever beta’d (and I love my betabee fics like WHOA-- rest assured well dicuss more on this topic later), and also?  It’s wonderfully cracky and funny and earnest and a fantastic little love letter to our ship at a time post-finale when were were all needing a reason to smile.

(And OMG the identity of the One True Cylon God is just genius, y’all.)

3.  Periapsis by peri_peteia(f/k/a rawles)
One of the great stories ever told by a giant of the previous generation.  A re-imagining of Lee and Kara’s journey as if they were both fully functioning psychopaths, all Dexter-style.  It sounds insane and it kind of is---and I’m not going to lie, it can read a little harsh and shocking at times but it’s totally why it works.  Moreover, the really unbelievable thing about this story is that the characterizations are staggeringly authentic.  And it does such a wonderful job of highlighting the distance pilots always kind of feel from everyone else, from the entire world at large.  From every one but each other.  I’ve long suspected that the have an incredibly humanizing and simultaneously destabilizing influence on each other and this fic just spells it out with each gorgeous word.  The writing is also effortless and yet so carefully constructed.  Run, don’t walk to this one, y’all.

Well, my taste tends to run to the character study, I think. Hard-hitting, insightful, spare. I love walking away from a story feeling like I finally figured out something about a character I love that had eluded me before. Here are three favorites in that vein:

tomorrow's dust (flares into breath) (http://bsg2003fics.livejournal.com/285532.html?style=mine) by spamdilemma. Lee loves first, and you follow. This is a Zak-POV take on Lee; gorgeous, concise, quiet, poetic, and sad, it says so much about Lee's feelings for both Bill and Kara. And it really highlights all Lee's contradictions, the tremendous passion - both anger and love - that he keeps so tightly under wraps, and the way he winds up cheating himself out of the things he wants because he can't bear to be open with people. And Zak just makes me love him here, because he is so open, even in the last moments of his life.

Amateur (http://fahye-fic.livejournal.com/30990.html) by mercurial_wit. Everyone's probably already read this one, but what can I say? I love it. It is a Sam-POV piece on Kara and Lee and eventually Kara/Lee, and it performs the miraculous and actually does right by everybody in the Quad of Doom. It shows how beautiful each of these characters is, how much they care about each other, and it allows Sam both to appreciate Kara for the amazing person she is and also to come into his own as an independent guy who isn't anyone's doormat and who has talents and gifts all his own.

And I'll go ahead and rec Against (http://hell-fic.livejournal.com/5061.html) by spoonishly just because that author's fic is rather difficult to find so I bet some of you haven't read this before. It's an AU take on what happens when Kara comes back from Caprica with the Arrow of Apollo, and there's something really right about her interactions with kinda!rebel!Lee. Bum Wheel (http://hell-fic.livejournal.com/6555.html) by the same author is also a winner; one of the best hurt-comfort fics ever written. So delightfully in-character.

Character studes... so much yes to this.

Amateur is just ... inspired. And more than anything to me it feels like such a thorough study of Kara (which is so insanely difficult to do, as getting across her nuance in fic is I think one of the most challenging things to do when writing her.) Two of my favorite bits in particular:

What’s frakked up about the whole thing is that Anders knows this: if Kara had to choose between them, one to live and one to die, she’d probably still pick him.

It’s not love. It’s guilt, and it’s duty, and it’s the simple fact that her head tells her that her boyfriend has higher priority than her captain. And Kara listens to her head far more than most people realise, because it’s a damn sight less complicated than listening to her heart.

And what’s really frakked up is that Anders now knows this: she liked him better when she didn’t have him. When she could carry him around like an invisible shield against life and love and Lee. When he was alive enough to be an excuse, but dead enough to feed the guilt that keeps her on a narrow crazed trajectory through her own existence. Actually having him there is finally derailing her, disturbing the ecosystem, knocking them all out of orbit, any of a million scientific metaphors that he could name.


And also this (and just a great description of a kiss in its own right):

But it’s been just over three weeks since Anders left her fighting tears in the middle of the officers’ quarters, and when he finally walks into one of the workout rooms to find them pressed up against a wall he almost doesn’t recognise them. Of all the ridiculous things. Their eyes are closed, Lee’s hands cupping her face and resting at her waist, hers curled up against his chest. Anders steps back and watches them from the hatchway, adjectives presenting themselves in his mind: slow. Careful. Deep.

It doesn’t look exciting, or dangerous, or rough, or spontaneous, or any of those things he would normally associate with Kara Thrace.

What it does look is real.

I love this story SO MUCH! First, because it's an EPIC TALE of Lee and Kara. Second, because it's a PERFECT crossover with Fight club... and by perfect I mean that neither story stays the same. This isn't a 'replace Name A, with Name B". It's fully formed on its own. Last...? Because IT'S ONE OF THE HOTTEST THINGS I'VE EVER READ and sci_fi_shipper is in her full glory as a storyteller with this fic.

And this fic - seen through a variety of snapshots - has exactly that... along with a slowly unfolding storyline and realizations about the nature of Kara's personality which addresses all of her major relationships. It's as much a character study about her as a lovely retelling of canon. So worth reading!

This fic immediately comes to mind because it is my perfect vision of grieving Lee after the poof (and the kinds of things that would have to happen to make him whole again). The world building is unparalleled and forgive me, but something on a scale rarely seen in fanfiction. It is beautiful in its epic scope and has thoroughness and attention to detail that I could never write. It also proves that the only real way for Lee to heal and move on is to be with Kara. Period.

And I'm going to rec two fics from FF.net, which weirdly is not even a place I visit very often. I just happen to adore these.

I recently discovered this WIP (currently at ten chapters and actively updated) via koolaidmom11 and I have been dying for an update. As I described it on twitter, the revelations and character insights this author provides about pilots take my breath away. I've had to read and re-read particular phrases because they encapsulate the pilot dynamic in such a stunning and riveting way. This fic is not to be missed.

This is a fic that a lot of people hate. It is unfortunately rife with typos and it has some CRAZY writing that breaks the confines of normal fiction (that sometimes works and sometimes is just confusing). The thing about this fic that I love so much is that the author does absolutely SHOCKING things to the characters and the plot that kept me stunned and riveted until the very end. It is a mystical fic about Gods and Penance and Suffering and how to live through it to find what you want and need in your life. It is not a tremendously happy tale (although I find the ending utterly and frustratingly beautiful). As weird as it sounds, this fic honestly changed the way I think about and write fic.

I'll throw my tags in the box, here goes!

1. This one's got to be familiar, because it's one of your own - Carried Away (http://workerbee73.livejournal.com/108566.html), by workerbee73.
It's pure, canon-fitting perfection set in early S1, and one of my favourite pilotfics of all time because it captures the pilots of that era so well - terrifying intensity, personal space invasions and pilots presented in the ways I love them best, as Mommy (cranky Mommy here) and Daddy Pilot and as best friends and people who just get each other like no one else. And all from a third-person perspective.

2. Dangerous Games (http://taragel.livejournal.com/184268.html#cutid8), by taragel - fruit of a past DPP, this is pre-mini pilots+Zak, and it has everything I love from fics covering that era - forbidden attraction, NUCLEAR levels of hotness, and Kara pushing Lee's buttons. It's perfectly in line with what I imagine of canon from that era - happy-but-longing baby!pilots will make anyone melt.

3. Did I Fall Asleep, Part 1 (http://tulipfic.livejournal.com/56564.html) and Part 2 (http://tulipfic.livejournal.com/56731.html) by rayruz. This is two things I don't usually go for:
1. a crossover (with Dollhouse)
2. a post-finale fixit

You don't have to be familiar with Dollhouse canon to get this, though it's more fun if you are (Topher!) and this fic is so good, it made me forget how irritated I used to get with the protagonists of that show on a regular basis. And that is a secondary consideration, because this is about Lee and Kara finding each other again in the present-day 'verse, and how it happens is absolutely gorgeous, spot-on and actually made me feel better about Daybreak - a feat NO fixit had managed until I read this. And also, it is funny in spots, which I love to death (no spoiling, but Topher's comment on Lee's accent did make me grin).

You are so completely adorable! Thank you! That little fic was my homage to fahye and claira and all the writers I grew up reading who captured early canon pilots so beautifully. Just a little love letter to fandom in its way. : )

And yes! I remember the DPP where tara wrote that-- it's the twister one, right?

Wisteria writes Kara, Matt, and Lee perfectly, and it's the only Kara/Matt pairing I've seen, which is a shame because I discovered how much I love that pairing. I frequently go back and reread Aegis, and I love it just as much, if not more, every time.

This is an absolutely gorgeous look at Lee and Kara's life post-finale, where Kara didn't disappear. Pilots go off on their own to make a life on Earth, and it's not easy, but they're together and happy with each other. Reality and Immortality is easily one of the best fics I've ever read, and if you haven't read it yet, go read now!

This story is angsty and dark with Kara and Lee starring in the main roles. It’s beautiful and dreamlike and explores the true depths of PTSD and the horrors of trying to move past things too dark to forget. Nicole is not, by her own admission, a Kara / Lee shipper, but she writes them with a brutal clarity sometimes missing in ‘shippy fic’. The storyline itself assumes BOTH Kara and Lee were held captive on New Caprica and how they deal with the aftermath. If you love hurt/comfort, Give You All (http://archiveofourown.org/works/212124) delivers in spades. I love this story.

The Disappearing Ground (http://shah-of-blah.livejournal.com/24451.html) by shah_of_blah

(KAG Random: When there are remixes, I always look for the stories that author’s ‘keep out’. I think they’re usually their best ones. THIS fic is the one Shah always keeps.)

This fic is one of the first ‘post-finale’ pieces I truly loved. (Signal Fires – mentioned above – is another.) For The Disappearing Ground (http://shah-of-blah.livejournal.com/24451.html), Shah weaves a tale around that disappearance of Kara, bringing her back again and again, and leaving Lee trapped by the prospect of her return. In reading it, I found myself in the same place. Hoping she’d return and yet slowly realizing (and fearing) that perhaps she wouldn’t. Lovely and completely canon-consistent.

And a Star to Steer Her By (http://archiveofourown.org/works/20196) by coffeesuperhero

Would you like to sob about the Daybreak finale? Yes? Well, I have those days too. And when I do, I go to And a Star to Steer Her By (http://archiveofourown.org/works/20196). It is beautiful and guttingly written and I literally – LITERALLY – had tears streaming down my face as I read it the first time. (And that’s saying a lot from someone who REVELS in killing off characters.) It is brilliant and charming and an epic portrait of grieving and acceptance. I adore this story, start to finish. The language is more of an elegy of loss than a story. Beautiful!

Eight Seconds Left in Overtime (http://songandsilence.livejournal.com/23530.html#cutid1) by songandsilence -- A series of drabbles that capture just about every shade of pilots in a series of perfect nutshells. (Warning--one drabble has non-canon character death).

The Anchor and the Abyss (http://crone-fic.livejournal.com/5605.html) by crone_fic -- This fic starts off so silly and banter-y but turns angsty then sexy then contemplative in turns. Love the range of emotion here.

Forbidden Fruit (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3493808/1/Forbidden_Fruit) by settler (the former shuchong) -- They start to give each other apples on a semi-regular basis. They're really frakking difficult to get a hold of, so she's never quite able to time her gift-giving exactly the way she wants to. Maybe it's better that way, though, because she finds that the apples he gives her are all the more welcome because she can't predict when they'll come. Gorgeous and emotional, furtive loving pilots.

Guh, this one is hot! But it also is a great bit of their care and friendliness. Wonderful banter, stressed and dorky Lee, sassy and teasing Kara, take charge Lee, vulnerable Kara, and songs about titties. Really, what more could you want??

This has a great lazy, hazy, sexy feel to it. Zak, Kara, and Lee pre mini. Foxrayne excels at this genre. Nice USTiness between K/L without really causing problems between K/Z. Fairly short but it really tells so much of a story in a few scenes.

The Law Laid Down (http://archiveofourown.org/works/66799) by sage_theory - this is a bit of possessive!Lee porn set after UB. It's got a few issues with grammar and spelling (yes, I am that kind of person), buuuut it is way too hot for me to care.

Feeling Good (http://archiveofourown.org/works/105416) by amidala_thrace (this one is on LJ too (http://jedionpaper.livejournal.com/24487.html) if that makes you more comfortable) - this one pretty much melts me into a puddle. It's a self-described PWP sexy outtake from "The Oath." Apparently, I really like porn. So, I will just share.

I'm fairly certain someone here rec'ed me this (and probably in this comm), but I really love for whom it is reserved (http://sangga.livejournal.com/263.html) by sangga. It's set after 33 and Lee and Kara pretty much get each other through the guilt and grief of shooting down the Olympic Carrier. It's just written so well and pulls at the heartstrings and makes me smile all at once.

Children of the Gods (http://colonialgames.livejournal.com) by miabicicletta and olga_theodora - A Hunger Games AU, though you don't need to be familiar with the books to read this. The story is a sprawling ensemble WiP, but it can absolutely be read with Pilots-goggles.

Aegis (http://users.livejournal.com/wisteria_/993982.html) by wisteria_ - A BSG/Law and Order UK crossover/BSG AU/fix-it fic (for both shows!) It makes me happy.

Dangerous Game (http://workerbee73.livejournal.com/tag/dangerous%20game) by workerbee73 *sucks up* - A super fun AU with SPIES and THE MOB and ACCIDENTAL MARRIAGE. As trope-y as it sounds, this fic is as intelligent as it is fun as well as being clever and generally a delight.

Srsly, thank you. I had so much ridiculous fun writing that story. And my goodness yes it was trope-y, ha! But it warms my heart to think a little bit of smarts also managed to creep in. (Hey, if I can blow shit up AND be clever in the same story, then I am one happy fangirl. *g*)

And omg, I've got to read your movie!fic! Really excited. RL has been CRA-ZY this week so I didn't get a chance yet. But soon! :D

I too am constantly at awe at her skill with words. It is really hard to pick just one story to rec. Luckily, some have alredy been mentioned. I chose Meridian because it is a poem and it is so beautiful! Besides, she used the lyrics of a song I love and recced as inspiration.

Almost out of the sky (http://gwassh0ppa.livejournal.com/2934.html) by gwassh0ppa I know many people don't read WIP before they're finished for fear of never seeing the end of a beloved story.This is one of my favorite stories ever. It is unfinished and I don't think it will ever be completed. Despite the frustration it makes me feel, I still love it. I think it is the best story I've read set in present time Earth. I love the characterization. The writing is beautiful. There are some really endearing original characters. Something happened to cause a rift between Lee and Kara but they are slowly getting closer again after 3 years. And the angst... I have no words.

embolalia: "Prologue" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6952009/9/Prologue) -- My vote for perfect pre-mini AU, feels emotionally canonical, (if you know what I mean?). Reveals, plausibly, the real dimensions of the invisible tragedy that was the sand in the clamshell of their whole relationship.

phindel: "Hush" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4018406/1/) -- A short set of scenes that explores how much the pilots communicate without words. I think it illuminates a kind of light in acknowledged impenetrable darkness between the two of them. Packs a punch, for its size.

taragel: "The Cutting Edge" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7308118/1/) -- I didn't even know that I was a fan of the ice skating-themed chick flick The Cutting Edge before I read this retelling of it around Lee and Kara. Here's the thing: the story's interesting, with respect to their respective wounds and ambitions, hilarious (deliberately, wonderfully ridiculous) with its casting of a host of bit parts, but really powerful for a) its sense of family (particularly the back-story it gives Kara) and b) the compromises that it shows both of them making with ambition. Just completely entertaining.

Apologies for this being a little sloppy. I had 56 stories I marked as fave on delicious and cross referencing them with what's already been posted took me a while. I hope there won't be any repeats.

As I mentioned, I had a really hard time whittling down my list. Some were already covered, others I couldn't quite remember why I favorited them (time for a reread, I know). I might come back and do a second post but for tonight, here's what I got:

OMG, sooooooooo much yes to Contraventions and Stupid Thing Last Night (and Contraventions was one of the first fics I ever read too! I was so hooked on pilots after that. ; )
