DPP: Fancy Meeting You

Since people took so kindly to the idea of Lee tying Leoben up with noodles in my alternate Season Five yesterday, I thought we could expand on that idea a bit today...

We love how often our pilots' major scenes revolved around each other and their relationship, but the by-product of that is that there are several canon characters that either one never really got a chance to interact with. So, to that end, here are two lists, one for each character, of people that our pilots had little or no conversation with on the show (some they never even met!).  Your job is to pick one or more pairings and write a conversation or meaningful interaction with them that pertains to the Kara/Lee relationship. If you're not a fic writer, then just describe what you'd like to see them discuss (and maybe some other nice kind soul will come along and write it up as a little ficlet for you... who knows what might happen!!)  ;)

Or...if none of these folks are pinging for you, feel free to take a stab at a conversation they never had about the relationship (so...clearly that's a wide playing field!) with any of the key canon players like Bill, Laura, etc. Maybe Lee & Sam or Kara & Dee talk a lot more about the affair/have different things to say...or maybe they talk before New Caprica happens?

Lee dogged the hatch to the pilots ready room and gestured to Julia that she should take one of the many seats. Lee sat down on the step near the podium.

“I owe Kara Thrace everything, Major Adama.” Julia started. “I thought I’d lost Kacey on New Caprica and I honestly didn’t know how I could go on...” her voice caught as Lee saw written all over the woman’s face the pain and strain that the separation had caused. Lee stood up and got Julia a glass of water, and she collected herself as she sipped it before continuing in more measured tones, as if she was struggling to keep her emotions in check, “and then I stepped off that Raptor and Kacey was there, and she was being cared for. Kara Thrace brought my baby back to me. She gave my life back to me.”

Lee nodded. “I can see why you feel that way about Captain Thrace, but I don’t understand why you feel like you need to talk to me about her.” Lee tried to keep his own emotions in check, trying not to repeat his mistake of earlier by speaking unnecessarily harshly.

“I’ve been having contact with her since we left New Caprica, you know. I’ve been trying to keep her in touch with Kacey, who is mad about her, and to thank Kara for rescuing my baby.” Julia paused to look at the child in her arms who was drifting off to sleep. “I think there’s something really wrong with her, Major Adama. At first she seemed happy to see Kacey, but she’s been rejecting us recently. She seems to be coming unglued and I can’t help her. I’m talking to you, because I don’t know who else I can talk to. I’ve been there when I thought I’d lost Kacey for good, and I can see what’s happening to her and I know she needs help. She needs someone.”

Julia paused, looking up at Lee, and he knew that his face betrayed him. The reason Kara wouldn’t stay in her box was because he cared too much about her, and in revealing how much trouble Kara was in, Julia had got around his defensive walls around his feelings about her, making him forget all his thoughts about how much he hated her. It left only the hurt from that night and love he felt for Kara.

“Please, Major Adama, please get her the help she needs.”

Lee nodded, trying to stop the tears he felt pricking at his eyes. “It’s okay Julia. I’ll make sure she doesn’t fall through the cracks.”

Julia let herself out, leaving Lee alone with his thoughts.

interesting. i can see this happening, especially Lee being hard on Julia and then feeling sorry for it.

what i don't get (but is not really relevant) is why did Julia wanted to speak to Lee and not Sam, or anybody else for that matter?

Argh! Another ficlet I should have included copious author's notes for! :) I need to learn to include all this stuff in my stories :/

In my head it's because she's been wrestling with this problem and Lee happens there at the point she needs to unburden herself.

Oh Leland with the temper to cover your wounds... Sigh. I love to think that if she had said something to Lee this would've maybe been the catalyst to them talking during their brief affair, which would maybe later prevent maelstrom. It's all so tangled though in that time frame...



Re: the why tell Lee question... I don't think you needed to explain it (and definitely not in an author's note.) Julia told Lee because he identified himself as the commander of the air group, and she was worried about one of his pilots. Seemed clear. (And who knows if she even knows Sam? I could easily see Kara never mentioning him, considering he wasn't much more than an afterthought/booty call for her at this point.)

I my head this is the ultimate outcome of the talk that Julia has. Because if Lee unbends enough to help Kara in Torn then she may get her head sorted out.

I don't think you needed to explain it... Seemed clear.

Phew, I'm glad. I know a problem with my writing is that sometimes I take it for granted that everyone can see what my intention was when writing and I was worried I'd done it again here.

actually my question came from the fact that saying to Kara's CO that she is (let's go with) "emotional" might've gotten her in trouble, like grounded.


it was just a curriosity about the back story and it was not ment as a criticism so i'm really sorry if it seemed like that.

No worries, I just felt the opposite, that it was pretty clear in the story to me why she told him--with the intention to help, not harm, of course. That's an interesting point though. I guess even if Julia had considered the fact that she could be getting Kara in trouble by mentioning it, she might consider it worth that risk (and maybe wonder if Kara should be flying at all) if she was so emotionally distraught. It's interesting to think about.

This is great.

I've always been really fond of the idea of Lee being BAFFLED by Kara having a friendship with Kacey because it's contrary to the fairly-realistic image he has of her.

I too love the idea that Lee is baffled by Kara's relationship with Kacey. And I've always thought Kara woudl have kept her relationship with Kacey (and Julia) private because of that kind of reaction. This is a very sweet, real sort of moment. Thanks.

I like your characterization of Julia here--I usually think of her as being (justifiably) pissed off about Kara's attitude, but I can see how she would also be deeply grateful to her. Nice job :)

Really liked this. Always wanted Lee to find out more about Kara's time in captivity, and learning about her totally uncharacteristic involvement with Kacey and maybe it's effect on Kara.

Would love to see you continue this to a confrontation between K/L over what Julia said and who Kacey is.

Interesting! I can really see this happening. Lee's moody behaviour towards a Kacey and snapping at anyone in his way. But finally understanding the reasons behind Kara's behaviour and overlooking his hate to help her.
