DPP: Fancy Meeting You

no_takebacksSince people took so kindly to the idea of Lee tying Leoben up with noodles in my alternate Season Five yesterday, I thought we could expand on that idea a bit today...
We love how often our pilots' major scenes revolved around each other and their relationship, but the by-product of that is that there are several canon characters that either one never really got a chance to interact with. So, to that end, here are two lists, one for each character, of people that our pilots had little or no conversation with on the show (some they never even met!). Your job is to pick one or more pairings and write a conversation or meaningful interaction with them that pertains to the Kara/Lee relationship. If you're not a fic writer, then just describe what you'd like to see them discuss (and maybe some other nice kind soul will come along and write it up as a little ficlet for you... who knows what might happen!!) ;)
Or...if none of these folks are pinging for you, feel free to take a stab at a conversation they never had about the relationship (so...clearly that's a wide playing field!) with any of the key canon players like Bill, Laura, etc. Maybe Lee & Sam or Kara & Dee talk a lot more about the affair/have different things to say...or maybe they talk before New Caprica happens?
P.S. The Clue game got another gorgeous drabble added yesterday all about everyone's favorite little brass figurine. Check it out and leave a prompt! Maybe you'll inspire someone!

He'd been striding though Galactica's corridors wearing his best CAG-I'm-busy-don't-you-dare-bother-me look, deep in thought. Truth be told, Lee was struggling to adapt to life on board Galactica again. Yes, he thought, I was under orders on Pegasus, but I felt much more in control of my own life. I'd forgotten what it was like, being CAG. He frowned as his thoughts flowed from thoughts of being CAG to thoughts of Kara. Starbuck, he corrected himself. Just another pilot. Just another screw up.
Lee always tried to keep a lid on thoughts of her because they always made him feel so much worse. It was just when he was struggling to put thoughts of Starbuck back in that box again, the one that kept her contained and made him able to function, that the noise started.
How can I keep her in her frakking box if someone is shouting her frakking name? Irritated, Lee spun around, looking for the source of the noise. Stupid, that’s not an adult voice, he realised That’s a child. Training his eyes lower he picked out a small blonde girl toddling along the corridor as fast as her legs could carry her, weaving between Galactica personnel who were clearly trying to go about their duties.
Lee sighed in exasperation. Nowhere else to be right now, I should take care of this. Then at least everyone else can get on with their jobs without a toddler getting in their way.
As the child was about to weave her way past him, Lee knelt down and caught her up in his arms.
“Who do you belong to?” Lee asked, but was greeted only with a stream of babytalk that made very little sense to him. Not recognising the child as that of anyone he knew, he started to walk towards Camp Oil Slick, reasoning that the child was most likely to belong to someone there. He was met at the hatch by a worried looking woman who was similar enough to the baby for Lee to realise that she was the mother.
“Oh thank gods,” the woman grabbed hold of the child, taking her into her arms and embracing her tightly, “Kacey, what have I told you about wandering off?” She turned to Lee. “Julia Brynne” she said, stretching out her hand to shake his. “Thank you so much for bringing her back. I’m sorry if she was a nuisance.”
Lee bristled at her tone. “Major Adama.” He snapped out, sounding and feeling much more like the person who had arrived on Galactica before the fall than he had done in a long time. “You need to keep a better eye on her. Do you have any idea how many places there are that she could get injured here, or the damage she could do to vital systems on the ship? We don’t have time to run around after children to make sure they don’t get hurt, we have work to do.”
Julia recoiled at his words and Lee hesitated for a moment, feeling instantly sorry for being so spiky with this woman who must have lost nearly everything in the fall of the colonies, and then lost it all again in the second exodus.
“I’m sorry, that was more sharp than I had intended,” Lee looked suddenly tired. “Just please, keep a better eye on her in future.” He turned to go, halting in surprise when Julia called out “Major Adama? You’re the CAG?”
“Yes?”
“Can I talk to you please? I’m worried about one of your pilots...”
Lee knew without even being told which pilot she was referring to. Given Kacey had been yelling her name as she’d been running it wouldn’t have been a difficult conclusion to come to, but even without that Lee realised he would have known. He surprised himself by being willing to listen.
Julia looked at him, readjusting her hold on Kacey who had been trying to wriggle her way down. “Is there somewhere we can talk in private please?”

Date: 2011-08-03 02:05 pm (UTC)“I owe Kara Thrace everything, Major Adama.” Julia started. “I thought I’d lost Kacey on New Caprica and I honestly didn’t know how I could go on...” her voice caught as Lee saw written all over the woman’s face the pain and strain that the separation had caused. Lee stood up and got Julia a glass of water, and she collected herself as she sipped it before continuing in more measured tones, as if she was struggling to keep her emotions in check, “and then I stepped off that Raptor and Kacey was there, and she was being cared for. Kara Thrace brought my baby back to me. She gave my life back to me.”
Lee nodded. “I can see why you feel that way about Captain Thrace, but I don’t understand why you feel like you need to talk to me about her.” Lee tried to keep his own emotions in check, trying not to repeat his mistake of earlier by speaking unnecessarily harshly.
“I’ve been having contact with her since we left New Caprica, you know. I’ve been trying to keep her in touch with Kacey, who is mad about her, and to thank Kara for rescuing my baby.” Julia paused to look at the child in her arms who was drifting off to sleep. “I think there’s something really wrong with her, Major Adama. At first she seemed happy to see Kacey, but she’s been rejecting us recently. She seems to be coming unglued and I can’t help her. I’m talking to you, because I don’t know who else I can talk to. I’ve been there when I thought I’d lost Kacey for good, and I can see what’s happening to her and I know she needs help. She needs someone.”
Julia paused, looking up at Lee, and he knew that his face betrayed him. The reason Kara wouldn’t stay in her box was because he cared too much about her, and in revealing how much trouble Kara was in, Julia had got around his defensive walls around his feelings about her, making him forget all his thoughts about how much he hated her. It left only the hurt from that night and love he felt for Kara.
“Please, Major Adama, please get her the help she needs.”
Lee nodded, trying to stop the tears he felt pricking at his eyes. “It’s okay Julia. I’ll make sure she doesn’t fall through the cracks.”
Julia let herself out, leaving Lee alone with his thoughts.

Date: 2011-08-03 04:15 pm (UTC)Re: the why tell Lee question... I don't think you needed to explain it (and definitely not in an author's note.) Julia told Lee because he identified himself as the commander of the air group, and she was worried about one of his pilots. Seemed clear. (And who knows if she even knows Sam? I could easily see Kara never mentioning him, considering he wasn't much more than an afterthought/booty call for her at this point.)

How hilarious would a snarky/slightly jealous convo between Kara and Billy be about the Lee/Dee relationship? THEY COULD GET DRUNK AND MAKE FUN OF THEIR STUPID ASS RHYMING NAMES! (er possibly billy would have to NOT DIE for this to happen.)
Likewise, there was tension and a hint of anger/blame (maybe? if I recall?) from Gaeta to Lee in the wake of Dee's death. Certainly it may have been an unnamed motivator for the mutiny. Imagine the hangar deck scene with that guy whose name I can't remember holding Lee at gunpoint... ON GAETA'S DIRECT ORDER. And then Kara coming along and putting a bullet in that plan? And maybe Gaeta too. Goodbye Mutiny.
The parental convos with Kara & Carolanne or Joseph, Lee and Kara's mom or dad, have lots of lovely shippy implications with K/L and Zak too of course. Pre-mini but...imagine if LEE saw the piano player in the bar at Joe's....?
Jean Barolay could have a lot to say about the affair I bet! When she's out on those dusty New Cap roads. Yet she remained a fan of Kara later...intriguing. How would she feel about Kara stepping out on Sam with Lee?
Tory could also be interesting--she was Lee's aide for a brief time and of course she had the affair with Sam. She maybe got to see both men missing/caring for Kara. Somehow I imagine it wouldn't sit well with Tory and she'd be sneering about it...
Finally, Romo. I sooo wanted a meaningful convo between Romo and Kara about Lee and her return from the dead and all that. Sigh. instead we just got the woobie face scene that Romo of course was powerless to resist.

Think the Kara/Carolanne convo has the potential to be so honest and touching. And initially so uncomfortable to Kara who has NO idea how to talk to a mother. Maybe i'll give it a go another day.

I'm really, really trying to imagine how that would pan out and would love to write it if it wasn't for the fact that Romo's voice refuses to speak to me. Not that that has stopped me putting out lame fics in the past, but BSG deserves better.

I'm especially imagining her trying to get help from him for her guilt over Zak's death and her conflicted feelings over Lee. It would just be bad, but possibly in an interesting way.

I've always liked that Kara's faith was private and personal. It's interesting to imagine her then going to an official religious figure for any reason, but certainly more so for something so personal as her conflicted feelings over Lee and Zak (and possibly Sam too).
