Weekend Grab Bag
May. 28th, 2011 01:43 pmHappy weekend, everyone! Thank you all for making this such a fun week, I've had a big grin on my face every time I opened my inbox! :)
For this weekend, I thought it would be fun to share some cute pictures that remind us of pilots. Like this:
I've copied a few links to the first websites of animal pictures that came up on my google search: HERE, MORE HERE, EVEN MORE HERE, and THE MOST HERE. Have fun taking a look, and share some with us! Let us know what pilots!moment they remind you of. You can share other silly pictures, too, not just animals. Looking forward to seeing what you find :)
RANDOM EXTRA NOTES OF RANDOMNESS:
These are just a few stray thoughts I've had lately, and I'm throwing them out there if anyone wants to comment --
* In general, I really enjoy the names that RDM invents for his characters. Back on DS9 there were some gorgeous examples, from "Julian Sabbatai Bashir" to "Enabrain Tane." But I must admit that I don't like the name Lee. What can I say? Definitely nowhere near my top ten choices were I ever to have a son. What names did you like best on the show? Were there any you disliked or found funny?
* Lee and Kara in our pop culture -- Which would they prefer?:
- Lennon or McCartney?
- Kirk or Picard?
- Reality TV or soaps?
- Espresso or latte?
- Cable or network?
- Andrew Lloyd Weber or Stephen Sondheim?
- Stephen King or Tom Clancy?
- Sean Connery or Daniel Craig?
- Batman or Superman?
- The Wire or House, MD?
- city or suburb?
- tango or tapdance?
- Hepburns: Audrey or Katherine?
- Cary Grant or John Wayne?
- Brontes or Austen?
- Byron or Keats?
- Disney or Looney Tunes?
La la la. Feel free to pose more questions if any occur to you :)
Have a very happy weekend, and for those celebrating Memorial Day, may the memory of all those you have loved and honored be close to you now and always; their service and sacrifices will not be forgotten.

My choices for your preference questions:
LEE

Cable (for the history channel)
(embarrassingly, I don't know enough to answer)
Tom Clancy
Sean Connery
Batman

Kate all the way
Cary Grant

For KARA, nearly the opposite for every one. :)

Date: 2011-05-29 01:38 am (UTC)Oh, Lee. I want to watch you tapdance, yes I do :)
And, yeah, he and Kara would totally drive each other nuts with these little things. But I bet they both like Looney Tunes :)

Date: 2011-05-28 05:52 pm (UTC)-Lennon or McCartney? Lennon.
- Kirk or Picard? Kirk.
- Reality TV or soaps? None of the above.
- Espresso or latte? Espresso.
- Cable or network? Network, I guess. Don't think she watches much TV. Or would pay extra for it.
- Andrew Lloyd Weber or Stephen Sondheim? Musicals aren't really her thing...
- Stephen King or Tom Clancy? Stephen King.
- Sean Connery or Daniel Craig? Sean Connery because Daniel Craig looks too much like Leoben.
- Batman or Superman? BATMAN.
- The Wire or House, MD? The Wire, obviously.
- city or suburb? City.
- tango or tapdance? Ha. Tango.
- Hepburns: Audrey or Katherine? Uh...I don't know enough about either to make a decision.
- Cary Grant or John Wayne? Much as it pains me to say it, John Wayne.
- Brontes or Austen? Hm...Austen.
- Byron or Keats? Byron.
- Disney or Looney Tunes? Uh...Looney Tunes.

Date: 2011-05-28 06:18 pm (UTC)I like Saul Tigh's name quite a lot; besides that I'm not really crazy about a lot of names on the show, LOL. They're all either very ordinary and vaguely unfitting for the characters to me, or they're..."Gianne" D: I love Baltar's name but that goes back to the original series.
And I think a lot of you have seen this:

Date: 2011-05-29 01:47 am (UTC)I agree that a lot of the names on this show don't seem that great to me (Laura in particular doesn't seem like the right name for Roslin, somehow). But I'm with you on Saul Tigh being a great name, and I'm also fond of Galen Tyrol.
Total sidenote: I've noticed that I don't like the names of a lot of my favorite characters, actually - I mean, let's face it, "Spock" is the kind of name that only a mother could love. Same goes for "Sherlock." Although I've always loved the story behind that one -- Arthur Conan Doyle said that he once had a bowling match with a fellow named Sherlock and he (Doyle) completely wiped the floor with him, and after that he always had a sneaking fondness for the name! :)

As for the preferences I can definitely see Lee curled up with Tom Clancy and Kara with Stephen King.
I didn't really dislike any of the names and I think the ones they came up with for the Sixes were the most interesting.

Date: 2011-05-29 01:50 am (UTC)Let's see: "Caprica," though that wasn't really a proper name, then Gina and Sonja. Any others I'm forgetting?
I think you've got pilots' reading preferences right :)

Date: 2011-05-29 03:08 am (UTC)I almost died laughing when they revealed Leland as Lee's full name though because I have a good friend who's nephew is Leland, and he will go off on how completely weird and old fashioned Leland is. Sometimes I just think of this and laugh.
I also have a cousin named Cara who hates the Kara spelling with a passion, but I'm actually kind of meh on Kara, either spelling, despite good reasons to like both.
What I actually think is weird about the names on BSG is how they manage to be all over the place and annoyingly repetitive at the same time. We have Bill and Billy, Paya and Isis/Hera. Not to mention Kara, Hera and Carolanne. I find that odd.

Date: 2011-05-29 03:45 am (UTC)And I CANNOT BELIEVE you actually know a real Leland. That is hilarious -- I didn't think there were seriously any out there. I wish him luck in life :)
Not to mention Kara, Hera and Carolanne
Yeah, and also Cally and Kendra. There does seem to be a certain "K" consonant fetish going on :) Personally, I find the weirdest part the Kira/Kara parallel from his previous show DS9, given that the two characters are so similar as well. The name repetition starts to get a bit weird the further you go with it: Dr. Baltar/Dr. Bashir, Garak/Zarek, Kira/Kara, Ben/Bill, Odo/Romo. There's a character on DS9 named Adami as well. It's just a bit odd.
