Daily Pilots Post: BSG--The Reboot
Apr. 25th, 2011 07:50 amHi, Shipper Nation! Long time, no see, I know, but I'm Heather and I'll be leading the DPP this week. :)
You know, my boss and I were talking the other day about where BSG went wrong, and we decided that the best place for a reboot would be directly after Unfinished Business (or, okay, she decided and I went along with it because as many problems as I have with Season 3 as a whole and the mess Kara and Lee were already in at that point, I can't deny I love the ep). Let's say that BSG ended with UB and you've been asked to reboot the series from that point, with a focus on what, in hindsight, the studio thinks was one of the strongest relationships in the show--Kara and Lee. (I know, I know, not bloody likely--just go with it!) You have *zero* knowledge of future events in the show that actually aired from that point on. Blank canvas. Where do you go with it?

Re: Scenerio #1 - oops, this got *long*
Date: 2011-04-25 11:55 pm (UTC)I just really wanted it to end without her dying :( There are no words for just how devastated I was at the end of Maelstrom and I only had to wait two-ish hours to find out she lived again. I have no idea how people who watched it in real time and had to wait weeks managed.
To some extent I still wish Maelstrom had ended differently because then she wouldn't have been dead!kara and there would have been no *poof*.
Apparently I'm in to counter-factual Pilots almost as much as I'm in to counter-factual History.
Re: Scenerio #1 - oops, this got *long*
Date: 2011-04-26 12:37 am (UTC)Suicide (or whatever it was supposed to be) was out of character for Kara at that point in my (not so humble when it comes to Kara Thrace) opinion. And I do think that Lee would've grounded her. He has always been the one to push her when she needs to accept a hard truth. He also has enough sense to know if Kara herself says she needs to be grounded...since she would NEVER have previously said that (even during crap like the Scar drinking)...then she needs to be grounded. ARGH!!! I'm gonna stop right now.
Also, hi Liz!! I'm Liz!! Welcome to K/L land, where counter-factual pilots are embraced. (And I promise I'm not usually so bitchy...I just have some PTSD/aggression when Maelstrom/Daybreak/RDM&co. are discussed. Usually I'm the essence of sweetness and light with nary a cynical thought. Ask Kate since she's in this thread too.) ;)

Date: 2011-04-26 04:36 am (UTC)I missed this bolded part. You distracted me with messy-ing, which is hella more fun than PTSD/aggression towards the whole Maelstrom/Daybreak fiasco. :D

Maelstrom stream of conciousness thing
Date: 2011-04-26 09:56 pm (UTC)I think one of my problems with the way maelstrom went down was the way it seemed to come out of the blue. I don't think suicide was really Kara anyway, but there was absolutely no groundwork leading up to it. I was actually really annoyed with S3 as I watched it through for the first time because I couldn't understand why they didn't deal with the aftermath of her time on NC in any detail, or anything better than a haphazard fashion. I think if Maelstrom had come up organically from a season of build up about her mental state after NC then maybe I could be more accepting of it. Maybe.
Yay for embracing counter-factual pilots \o/ Finding this comm has helped somewhat with my PTSD/aggression about the way things ended somewhat. (Sorry if I've stirred yours up btw :))
It's been nice to find people who talk about the way things could have gone. Most BSG fans in my life don't tend to talk about the characters as real people or try to see other ways the plot could have gone. It was a tad frustrating when emerging from my month-long BSG coma (the month in which I watched it through for the first time without watching anything else - the household PVR was full to capacity by the end of the month).
