Oh boy, I could gush about Ondaatje's prose for ages. There's a particular part in the English patient's retelling of his story where he compares man's need to own and conquer the desert territories to the possessive impulses of love. It's just stunning. Ever since I read it I've wanted to travel across North Africa- but I think the latest events in the Libya and Tunisia have put that trip back by quite a few years.
This meet and greet has been a great idea- good to know there's another Australian out there in the fandom somewhere.
