But that means I have to retcon in some irony about Kara saying human being have to bleed and stuff since apparently she...wasn't? And I have repressed most of S4, sooo... ;)

I maintain that they had an idea, but when it got down to the wire, the whole thing swung way too mystical for what the writers (read: RDM) were willing to jump for. So they retconned and fumbled in a big, bad way.
