I have a confession to make. In general, with a few exceptions, I don't like crossovers. Which is weird because my first real brush with Fandom on LJ was a pan-fandom RPG which was basically one giant crossover. So actually I guess what I mean is that I don't much like crossovers that take place in one of the involved characters' universes. Crossovers on neutral ground are easier for me to get into. But I'm well aware that all of that puts me in a minority, and I'm trying to get over the phobia.
Which, in a meandering way, brings me to today's topic:
Do you like crossovers involving our pilots? Are there fics/vids/etc that you would consider a gateway drug into BSG crossovers? Are there universes/characters that you'd love to see crossed with Starbuck and Apollo? Me, I have recently come to the conclusion that I want to see Kara and Fiona Glenanne from Burn Notice in a bar together. There will be drinking and innuendo and a really big brawl. And then they will go home and shag their boys silly.
What do crossovers say to you?

Date: 2010-07-15 08:23 am (UTC)In general I find Kara really hard to put with people romantically (even when putting aside shipping bias) but there aren't many personality types I can't see her getting along with at all, so there are tons more friendship pairings I'd love to see her in in crossovers.
And as for Lee, he's even harder to pair with people, but I'd love to see him in a Doctor Who fic!

That's interesting. I'm kind of the opposite, but I can see the logic in it--and there are certainly a ton of crossover friendships I've imagined for Kara.
I would like to see Lee in a DW fic too. I kind of want Lee/Martha fic.

Date: 2010-07-15 11:27 am (UTC)As for crossovers I DO like, if you watched the shortlived Dollhouse (on which Tahmoh costarred),
Huh. While I was over at Ray's to get that link, I spotted a Faith-from-the-Buffyverse-in-space crossover that I haven't read... Faith + Kara = so much badass chick I have to go read it.

Date: 2010-07-15 12:36 pm (UTC)As for gateway crossovers, I'd second the rec for Did I Fall Asleep? It gives you two (and a half) familiar characters, and I think the setting is pretty easy to figure out even if you hadn't seen Dollhouse. I'd also suggest a fic like Scars That Words Have Carved (also by rayruz) as it is a BtVS character (Faith) transplanted into the BSG universe. You'll start to forget that it's a crossover at all, I swear.
My favorite crossover 'verse is probably BSG/Firefly, just because I think those two worlds go together really well. Also because I ship Kara/Mal. And kinda maybe Kara/Zoe too. Sadly, there are not as many of these stories as I would like.

Date: 2010-07-15 11:19 pm (UTC)I've mentioned before that Kara and Lee as Jedi is an idea that appeals to me.
And I think a "Quantum Leap" crossover could be wonderful -- for those of you who've never heard of it, that was a sweet sci-fi show in the '90s whose main character was a time-traveller who "leaped into" (incorporeally possessed) the bodies of various ordinary people in history with a mission to change something in their lives for the better -- to "put right what once went wrong." I think it would be great to see him leap into someone like Helo or Adama or the Chief, with the mission to put right what went wrong in Kara's life -- maybe help her to avert the events of Maelstrom and guide humanity to a better road to Earth, and along the way help her work things out with Lee in a way that didn't fail spectacularly. Plus it would be fun since Dean Stockwell (Cavil) played the loveable sidekick in Quantum Leap -- dealing with his evil robot ancestor would be fun!!
I also really love historical AUs, which are a little different from crossovers, but I'd love to see more stories that put Kara and Lee together in the Trojan War, or ancient Rome, or the Napoleonic era (Hornblower crossover FTW!), or as rival pilots in the first decades of powered flight (Kara as Amelia Earheart, anyone?)
The thing I love about crossovers is their sense of new possibilities, and freedom from canon, and yet the texture and beauty of watching Kara and Lee really *fit* into a different world. I think innibis's fairytales are a beautiful example of how rich and imaginative and real it can feel to insert BSG characters into a familiar universe in unexpected ways.
Sorry, I know I'm blurring the lines of AUs and crossovers in this comment, but I really do think both have the potential for delightful stories.
