Re: How much did Dee know about NuCapFrak?
Date: 2010-06-18 05:06 pm (UTC)I'm basing this on the discussion that Dee has with Lee in the raptor after they leave New Caprica the morning Kara marries. This is one of those extended scenes that didn't make it to air, but it basically involves Dee saying she'll marry Lee until the cylons come back or Kara Thrace walks back into Lee's life.
Ouch.
That girl knew she was headed for a world of pain... and yet she still jumped in without a backward glance.
So my Friday Free for All question is this: WHY would any sane person do that? Why?
(And ninjamonkey's description of Lee's "magical hip dents" can't be the ONLY reason for it.)

Date: 2010-06-18 05:15 pm (UTC)To answer your question: IMO, it's the end of the worlds. Dee says it all. Let's try to have a life, any life, when we can. It's lame and sad and frankly, a HUGE disservice to the character the writers had established for Dee in S1, but that's probably why she did it.
Re: How much did Dee know about NuCapFrak?
Date: 2010-06-18 05:28 pm (UTC)To answer your question about whether or not Dee KNEW about the New Caprica tryst, I'm actually kind of torn. One part of me thinks that EVERYONE knew. First, it's a tent city for goodness sake. Sound carries really far at night, and although Lee and Kara were pretending they were in her cabin, they weren't... I think that the "yell it to the stars" idea is cute, but would carry consequences. (I have this fic niggling at the back of my brain where Gaeta is the first one to make it to the raptor, and has a little heart-to-heart with Dee before Lee gets there.) Secondly, if Tigh knew (as that extended scene shows), then Ellen knew, and if Ellen knew... well, everyone knew by the next day at latest... in time to stop the shotgun wedding.
My other opinion is that Dee never realized it went that far. This is based on how Dee seems able to keep her blinders in place at all times (well, until Earth 1.0 that is), basically living her life in a dream-state and not seeing that humanity is disintegrating around her. I was honestly pretty disappointed by the flat approach to developing her character in the show. By the end she was just a "stand by your man" kind of gal and it rubbed me the wrong way. No, I'm not a fan. There could have been so much more to her, but there wasn't.

Date: 2010-06-18 10:01 pm (UTC)I don't really know. My guess is fear of loneliness. Being alone is scary so people settle. We see that happening everyday around us. It is better to stick with the nice guy here now than to wait forever for prince charming (who may or may not come one day). In our world, I'd add fear of other people's judgement. Even if it ends up in divorce, at least you can say you have been married once and prove to the world that there is nothing wrong with you since someone once wanted to be with you. Not very evolved, but real, nonetheless.
I never hated Dee. In fact I really liked in the beginning, especially when she helped Lee to break Laura from the brig back in season 2 and when she convinced Bill to go after them in Kobol. I don't think she was disloyal to Billy or that what she did when she was with him compares to what Lee did to her when he cheated on her with Kara (with or without sex). I was never convinced she really loved Lee, though. The love she felt for him certainly is not the kind of love Kara and Lee had. But then again, most people never experience anything so deep and strong. I think she really liked/loved him more than she ever liked/loved Billy, though. So, she settled. You have to take what you can now because you don't know if there is going to be a tomorrow. And as fas as settling goes, she didn't do so badly - after all, she got Lee (magical hip dents and all). She already had the admiral as a father figure and I guess she had her own daddy issues to deal with. She did say something about her father in that interview with D'Anna Biers, didn't she?
But she didn't need to marry him, especially if she knew he really loved Kara. I'm not saying she should necessarily have broken up with him and be alone. But marriage is a big deal. It may be conservative of me, but I think this is not a step you should take knowing beforehand it is not going to last. In this sense, her behavior accepting his proposal was even worse than his (the proposal itself) because we could argue that he at least was trying to convince himself he was going to forget Kara and make it work whereas Dee seemed to have a clearer understanding of the situation she was getting in. She had no delusions. This could be sign of how afraid she was , how much she needed to play make believe while she still could.
