Named after Joss Whedon; Buffy The Vampire Slayer was notorious for this, as fans would come up with detailed and elaborate theories or plots during summer hiatuses, most of which got completely thrown out within three episodes of the new season.

In my house, we use "Jossed" to refer to killing a main character (more specifically, with little lead-in and for apparent shock value). He's done it in every 'verse, but for potentially spoiler-y reason, I will not name them. *huff* And I still will follow him to the end of the earth. Bah.

They do mention that as an alternate meaning later on that page actually! I'd only heard it in fanfic terms though. Heh.
