First, a HUGE thank you to everyone who posted in Lee's thread yesterday.  He is truly awesome and you guys provided bunches of reasons why...just in case looking at him is not enough. *g*  You shippers completely rock.

Now let's switch to our girl Kara.  Please spam it up in here...pics, lists, vids, metas.  Keep the celebration going strong!

Let the Kara love begin...

I'll start with a cut from a post I made awhile ago.  I promise I will be back with more later today.

Why I love Kara Thrace...let me count the ways...

 

1. She's no angel.  And she'd be the first to tell RDM to frak off for trying to retcon her into that box.

2. There's no place like hack.
3. Everything's not fine.

4. *blushes* She inspired me to chop off my hair with a pocket knife...and it was truly cathartic.

5. "Nothing but the rain" is as good a motto as any.

6. BPD needs a poster child.  (See me or Cosette for an upcoming and more extensive LJ entry on this one.)

7. She may be frakked to hell in daily life, but she is the best there is when it comes to her career.

8. Leoben was too busy obsessing over her in S4.5 to even bother being seen trying to fix Galactica with the sixes and eights.  (Yes, i know CKR was also busy, but hey...i'm shuffling off reality and canon's mortal coil and interpreting to best fit our pilots from here on out.)

9. Kara represents the best and worst in me.

10. Frak or fight.

11. Mandalas are tempting potential tattoos.

12. Lee Adama loves her.

13. Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, and P!nk wish they could be as bad a** as Starbuck.

14. Roslin, Cap6, and D'anna do too.

15. She's an artist.

16. Dirk may have been first, but Katee was best and her Starbuck lives in us all.

17. She's beyond insane.

18. She has a shitload of art and music in her apartment but only a packet of Ramen noodles to eat.

19. She is the leader of the thinky thoughts brigade, now overseen by Bee.

20. Kara Thrace loves Lee Adama.

21. This tree-hugging hippie shot a golf ball across the woods with an M-14 to indulge in gun!porn b/c Kara makes it look like so much fun.

22. She tagged a cylon ship with her callsign and pilot!danced it home until Lee realized it was her.

23. She's held a gun to pretty much everyone's head except the Adama men. 

24. Out of the box is where she lives.

25. She sees nothing wrong with almost always getting her own way...because she's opinionated but she's also usually right.

I searched and search yesterday for a post we did at the Shippers thread in Sept of 2007 on "Why we love Lee Adama" but I couldn't find it. However! For today, I'm ready!!

I don't think the Shippers will mind if I post the collective wisdom of the group! (and if they do, they'll surely let me know!!!)

1) They love each other. Always have and always will.

2 ) Kara gets Lee!! She doesnt want him to be the CAG,Major Adama,or Captain Apollo for her . She simply wants him to be Lee, for himself, and because that's who she really wants. She wants Lee not the many versions of Major Adama.

3) Lee is the only man in her life she treats as an equal and he views her the same way.
4 ) The way she knows where he is and what he needs in battle,either on the ground or in space,and how she always has his back.

5) I love how she surprises him with her intellect.......He's not the only smart one.
6) I love the artist under the warrior......I bet Lee does too. You know when she was reciting poetry to him that it was a MAJOR turn on for him.

7) I like the way she will make Tigh EARN her respect.....not give it freely just because he outranks her.
8 ) I like the fact she will wear a dress,on her own terms, to make a point to the silly man in her life.

9 ) I love the fact she is a secret Mother Hen to her nuggets. She'd make a great mom no matter that she probably thinks otherwise.

10) I like the courage she showed in telling Lee she passed Zac. Telling him could have destroyed both her of her relationships with the Adamas.

11) I LOVE the fact she knows the names of every pilot that has died in the war.

12) I even like that she was the one to hang Kat's pic on the board and that she gave Kat the pills so she wouldnt have to die a long,painful death.

13 ) I LOVE the fact she can beat a table full of men at cards. As the only woman at the poker table many nights I can so relate

14) I also love her loyalty to her friends. That's why she was so devasteted to discover Sharon was a cylon.
15) I love the fact she doesnt back down when she thinks she's right and not afraid to tell you your plan sucks when it does

I lost #16 or forgot to write one.

17) I love the fact the fact that Kara is built like a REAL girl .

18) I love the fact that she and Lee are really HOT together.

19) I love the fact she can kick Hotdog's arse both in and out of the vipers.

20) I love the fact she never backs down from a man just because he's bigger than her.

21) I love the fact that for her doughnut run/makeout with Lee session she didnt put on makeup,especially purple eyeshadow or lip gloss.

22) She is fiercely loyal
23) She has an independent spirit
24) She is a determined fighter in the face of adversity
25) She keeps a stiff upper lip amidst personal turmoil
26) She retains her child-like faith and sense of wonderment, when it would have been so easy to become bitter or jaded
27) She is forgiving, when it would have been so easy to let revenge triumph over love

(n) She loves Lee, for who he is.

Part 2!

28) Even though it’s not a particularly healthy thing, I love the fact that Kara still loves her mother, even though her mother abused her terribly; both physically and emotionally. To have the fortitude to love a parent after they’ve so fundamentally undermined your ability to trust, believe in and love ANYONE, speaks of a profound capacity to forgive.

29) Once again, this is not such a healthy thing, but I love the fact that I KNOW Kara will forgive Papa, no matter how badly he treats her. He doesn't have to admit he was wrong or ask for her forgiveness or even apologize. She’ll forgive him…and for no other reason than she loves him.

30) This is also not always such a good thing, but I love that Kara is so loyal to her friends and her military family that she’s willing to do just about anything for those she believes in; like assassinate an officer (Commander Cain) she thought was important to the survival of the fleet. Of course, Kara didn’t know about the crimes Cain committed. Nevertheless.

31) I loved that Kara stood by Athena, at first for Helo’s sake…because he’s her friend and she’s an intensely loyal person…and then later because she came to like and trust Athena again, well before anyone other than Helo. She’s always been a good friend to both of them, regardless of popular opinion and/or open prejudice.

32) By that same token, I love that Kara can set aside her loyalty for the right cause; like when she stole the Raider to go back to Caprica and retrieve the arrow of Apollo against Papa’s wishes…because Kara’s faith is the one thing that can trump her loyalty.

33) I love that Kara does things other people wouldn’t do because though they may not be the PC or the smart thing to do, they are sometimes the right thing to do. For example, I loved that she questioned the authority of Commander Garner on Pegasus. He was plainly unfit for command and she had the courage to challenge him, even though he had the power to hurt her professionally. That takes guts and it shows true leadership.

34) I love that even with the bad state of their relationship and against her old friend Helo, Kara still encouraged Lee to get up and continue fighting when Helo knocked him down in the boxing ring. I believe she just couldn’t stand to see Lee fall and her natural instincts were to give him her support.

35) I love that Kara was willing to take responsibility for walking out on Lee in UB, in that she knew it was up to her to make amends, even if it meant Lee beating the c rap out of her in the boxing ring. And I loved that after the fight, she told him she missed him (re: loved him) first. After all they’d been through, it needed to be said and I admire her for finding the strength to say it and with no clear expectation the sentiment would be returned. I think this shows emotional growth…Kara style or course.

36) I love that Kara didn’t hold Lee choosing Dee over her against him. She wasn’t angry or unforgiving…she just accepted it. And the most painful part of it all was the fact that I believe she thought she didn’t deserve him anyway…that she was unworthy of his love. I think she probably feels that way about everyone who loves her, b/c she doesn’t even really love herself.

37) Ok, setting shipper me aside, I love the fact that Kara was reluctant to dump Sam “just like that.” I believe the greater part of her reasoning had to do with her fear of giving herself over to her love for Lee, but I also believe somewhere in her reasoning, she really didn’t want to hurt Sam either. And even though she ended up hurting everyone involved (including herself), I don’t believe she ever wanted to hurt anyone.

38) I love that Kara is a compassionate person…even to her enemies when she feels it’s warranted. Even though I LOATH Leoben, I think the demented robot fell in love with her when she showed remorse for him being thrown out the airlock in FnB. Come to think of it…I wish she would have laughed in his face…but she’s a better person than I am.

39). I also love that Kara is ruthless to her enemies and those who would try and break her will. Keep her prisoner in your robot shack and get a sharp implement through your neck…*HA*

I love how she's just not what everyone knows she is .. that she is so much deeper than that! She's a warrior, a fierce friend, but also quotes poetry - Akin to the trophy girlfriend/wife actually being a Rhoades Scholar.

I love her sense of humor! That she can make others laugh (okay sometimes at inappropriate times) but I love that she often breaks stressful situations with humor.

I love her ability to point out the ironies that everyone else is afraid or unwilling to look at. That is because she is honest.

Below is an excerpt from 2007 from a post about of scenes where I fell for my girl. I still love her. For five years and counting. :-) She will always be my favorite character on BSG.

Act of Contrition, Kara and Adama
This was easy. My very favorite Kara Thrace scene, I've of course described before. Act of Contrition, Kara and Adama. It was the very first scene that made me really, really pay attention to this character. She wasn' t just a female Dirk Benedict. She wasn't just Starbuck, though I really liked Starbuck. She was a woman. I think my favorite part is the chemistry Katee has with Eddie. You can tell he really loves her. That's why it's heartbreaking. When he just stares at her and she just breaks right there before his eyes and just comes out with the whole truth. That's Kara breaking underneath Starbuck. She can't lie when he looks at her like that. I also love that she never looks away, she keeps his eyes the whole time. Bravery, honesty, love, and despair. That is the character I totally and wholly love. Oh, there aren't that many scenes like this where she's so vulnerable and broken. The Farm maybe, Captain's Hand, the end of Exodus 2. It's so rare to see this side of Kara, but once seen you can't ever not see it again.

Flight of the Phoenix, Kara and Lee
The weapons room scene. I like it because they are happy and bantering and shooting stuff. I actually like both of them in it, because they seem to kind of relax (hello, oxygen deprivation) and they are so cute. This scene always, always makes me smile. I'm smiling right now typing about it. I think my favorite line is, "I'll fly it!" Of course she will. She'll fly anything. She's their talisman. She's Starbuck, she can do anything. Don't you believe it in that moment? :-) And she's so darn cute. "You?" Lee asks. "Me." And then she giggles. I love it. Even though they're almost dying, I love it. I don't know how the actress can have the range from totally broken, to kickass hardcore, to verge of madness to giggling little girl, but she can be each of these things and you always believe it's Kara. And I love whenever she laughs, this doesn't happen enough. That moment in UB with Lee in the field when she's drunk and laughing almost made my favorite scene but that's one of my favorite scenes of Them. This one is just for Kara. Maybe she can be happy without being drunk or O2 deprived. She does get that laugh when she's flying sometimes and I love it.

So, the harbinger of death? They’re going the wrong way? I think we the audience is being led the wrong way. There will be death. There will be Earth. This I know. But I’ve been here before. Kara Thrace once said that she writes her own destiny. I still believe she can.

That is an awful article that I've seen before. Dirk Benedict has some serious privilege going on there and obviously does see women as objects due to his massive mysogyny that inhabits that article. And as a followup to my previous Starbuck vs Starbuck post...

I remember, when I was watching some of TOS, there was a scene pretty early on in the series when one of the cadets was shot down, and as we all know, when a pilot is dead their stuff is up for grabs. But when Starbuck sees someone taking the cadet's stuff, he yells for the soldier to put it back because they don't know for certain that the cadet is dead yet and no one is touching a thing until they know for sure.

And I had a momentary flash of respect for the character. And then I realized why. It pinged me as something that Kara would do. I know it was mentioned up there in the list, but Kara is so compassionate, even if she expresses it in her own, kinda frakked up way sometimes. They way she mothers her nuggets, the way she cared for Kacey, they way she remembers the names of all the pilots who have died, I could go on and on... that girl has so much frakking love in her heart, but I don't think she even realizes it.

No, I don't think she realizes it either. Kara is AWESOME at loving everyone except for herself. In the end, that's all I really want for Kara is for her to be at peace with herself...(and thus able to accept Lee's love and go frak and make K/L babies of course) ;)

Okay, so, I'm madly doing last-minute packing, because I have to leave in a few for VACATION OMG, but I love Kara too much to turn off the computer without posting a little first. :D :D :D

(I guess you could call it multishippery? But the footage of Kara with the guys is really incidental, or at least, that was my goal-- mostly, it's just our girl.)

I love her because she's a woman of action. Kara is a doer. She gets things done. Lee's gonna hang out and die in the miniseries? Hell no! Not while there's a badass motherfrakker named Kara Thrace around. Stranded on a crappy planet with no Viper? Ain't no thing. Kara Thrace will figure out how to fly a Cylon Raider. She doesn't just hang out and wait to die. She does something about it. Kara Thrace is not the object of your sentence; she is not acted upon. She is the subject of your sentence; she is doing the acting. I love that.

I love her when she's right and I love her when she's wrong, forever, the end, no takebacks. ♥

Aaaaand I'm gonna be late. Frak me. Lol.

I fell in love with Kara at first sight. Lead female + solid, sexy body = happy me.

But then we got to see more of her. Within 2 hours, we'd seen her start a fight, shrug off being thrown in the brig, get all girly when a cute guy walked in the room, lead the charge in an unexpected war and pray for the souls of those they had lost. She had so much depth and complexity. She was a complete person, a woman from the top of her bad hair cut to the bottom of her combat boots, and she was fierce. Seriously, seriously fierce. In everything she did from fighting to loving to living.

I've said this before, but without Kara Thrace, I would not have gotten into BSG. She was my entry point, plain and simple, and for a while I didn't even pay attention to anything else that was going on in the episodes I watched because I was so fixated on her. (Exhibit A: Black Market. No Kara = Liz no watchey. I think I walked away like five minutes in and hid in the bedroom until my boyfriend turned the TV off. :P)

Why do I love Kara?

Because she is me. Because she is the worst and best parts of myself.

Because she makes no apologies for being who she is.

Because of her smile.

Because Katee Sackhoff is beautiful - really beautiful.

Because with Kara, what you see is what you get. She lays it all out there and it's your problem if you have an issue with it.

Because she made me sob for fifteen minutes after "Maelstrom" - I was unspoiled and thought she was really gone!

Because I cried again after "Crossroads, Part 2" - because MY KARA WAS BACK!

Because she is such an interesting character to write about. She speaks to me in ways that no other character has - with the exception of Padmé Amidala. (Hence the username. Har har. ;D)

Because she is a challenge to write about. And I loves me a challenge.

Because I believe she truly loved both Lee and Sam, in different ways.

Because she refused to take the "easy way out" and just divorce Sam when her marriage wasn't working. (Yes, I am possibly in the wrong comm for this, hehe, but - multishipper! And it is one of the things I love and respect about Kara.)

Because she was so much more than just a pigeon.

Ahaha, that's hilarious! But I know exactly what you mean. I had to rewatch a s4 episode for fic purposes, and it had no Kara in it at all. I was so bored. This is why I rarely rewatch BSG (because I inevitably end up fast-forwarding through half of it).

Excellent comments, lovelies! It's great to feel the love for pilots as individuals, and I just want to say WORD to so many of the reasons listed.

For me, I think my love for Kara stems in large part from just how fucking HUMAN and REAL she is (screw the finale) and all that that encompasses. She's amazing, and I admire her like whoa, issues and all.

Katee recently said in an interview that she likes to play complicated women and if a role she's playing isn't complicated, she'll make it complicated.

I think that's what I love most about Kara. She's not one thing, but all things. She was complicated which again made her real. (Even in 4.0/4.5 all the way up to the end, she was complicated. Which is why I could always believe it was truly her.)

I fell in love with Kara the same time I fell in love with Lee - when I first saw in March 2008 33's scene by the viper. OMGs, the two of them, together + separately, I just couldn't believe I was seeing characters like these on the screen. I had never shipped before (I remember looking up the term "shipper" at urbandictionary.com to figure out what it was on the skiffy K/L thread). I've wondered why I cared so passionately about them. I've come to the conclusion that for me it was their individual combinations of foibles and fierceness that made me so mesmerized by Kara and Lee, but especially Kara as I'd never seen a character like hers before on the screen. And I think there's some kismet there because it's Katee's portrayl of Kara that is so addictive for me.

Imagine for the proverbial moment that Jamie and Katee were cast in opposite roles. Kara as a female Apollo, daughter of the Admiral, and Jamie as Starbuck (a year 2003 version of Richard Hatch's character). They're still best friends & in love & denying it & saving the fleet and Mary McDonnell's collective asses, but wow, that'a different show for me at least.

It's the one-year anniversary of the finale (which I detested for many, many reasons not the least of which is the *poof*) and I'm already imbibing. Let the weekend begin!

My relationship with Kara is complicated. I adore her-- gods know I adore her, but she also makes me crazy. Looking at her sometimes is like looking at a piece of myself-- making me remember times when swagger and self-defense and self-destruction and believing that you didn't deserve happiness or weren't supposed to get what you wanted were the order of the day-- to feel so driven and so invincible and yet so vulnerable and breakable. To run away from love and into something safe. To be scared shitless that someone else just might have you figured out. To curse and smoke and drink with the best of the boys but still be completely female. To embrace your sexuality. To make mistakes and be beautifully, wonderfully human. To lead, to be the strong one. To figure out who you really are and what your destiny is supposed to be.

I'm no viper pilot, but her story is my story, and I suspect, all of our stories. It's why I will always adore her and fight so hard for her. Why she will always hold a very special place in my heart.

It's why I love Kara Thrace.

I love this comment. Kara is at her best, I think, when she acknowledged the protection of the swagger and gives in to real, vulnerable feelings. We're all fascinate by her wibble, the almost shy, sweet way that she looks when she lets someone in, allows herself to think about what she feels and connect to the people around her. Let them in to see who she really is, on the inside. Kara, not Starbuck.

Taragel, I think there's a lot of Kara love out there, more than the comments may indicate. I think if you had a poll on whether people want to be like here you would get a lot of we see parts of ourselves in her but wish we could be half as badass as her.

I love Kara but can't put into words the reasons I love her and I'm trying not to just duplicate other people's reasons.
When I think of why I love Kara, I think it summarizes to a few things:
I love that she's a badass. I love that she's the top pilot in the fleet (meaning I love that she's the best person in the universe at her job).
I love that she's a strong independent woman.
