It's been a really great week full of fun discussion so far, so thank you all! Today I thought maybe we could talk about those times when our pilots were apart or just not focused on by canon very much. What were they doing in these time periods? Do you have certain head canon about them? Did they keep in touch (if they were physically separated)? Where were they emotionally with each other? Did they piiiiiiiiiiine? ;)

I've left some specific time periods below to get us started, feel free to add more though!

Kara writes letter to Lee explaining everything, her involvement in Zak's death, her feelings for Lee, her past with her mother that she never sends because she can't tell anyone else.

I love the idea that Kara doesn't really open up very much to anyone when she's first on the Galactica so she writes to Lee when she needs a break from being Starbuck-life of the party. I imagine there are lots of letters, like diary entries. Also she always planned on burning them, but then the worlds end and she hasn't ever done that part. She takes them to New Caprcia and loses them there during the exodus.

Wow, that gutted me. Just that she sort of poured all her heart out to him because he was the one person she *might* be able to trust with all this but then after New Caprica even that chance was gone.

This is the kind of sad I do best. Because it leaves an opening for reconnection, Lee catching Kara realizing the letters are gone and confessing their exsistance to him.

I think Kara would have taken all her personal possessions to New Caprica, feeling that was safer than leaving them and wanting to sever all her ties from the military. I don't think it would occur to her that Sam would invade her privacy by reading them. Although I kind of love the idea that he might have, especially if Kara wrote to a version of Lee that didn't at all jive with the Lee and Kara that Sam saw.

I absolutely love the idea that Kara would continue writing her safer Lee even after they reconnected. Now I have to decide when it would be best for Lee to have found this cache a letters. hee.

well, he wasn't mad at her anymore but didn't realise it until she jumped away with the raider (he used her name over the comms instead of her callsign/rank like he does when he's angry with her) and then seriously kicked himself for it, but then along came the order to arrest Laura (who'd told Kara to steal the Raider) and he can't bring himself to do it. And then along comes his mutiny, arrest, PapAdama getting shot and their escape (and I bet he wished Kara was with them during the toaster boarding in S2, too).

Kara is pretty thoroughly beaten down by life even as she lands on Caprica - she was not happy about the way things were left with Lee but she was also determined to focus on her mission and forget about their blowup, and Anders was a handy distraction along the way.

I think she was so guilt-ridden over it that she never went to see him while he was recovering, because she felt she didn't have any right to do so and it was Dee's place, not hers. (and this is not entirely disconnected from what happened in Scar with the near-frak either - I definitely believe Kara felt guilty about how that went down, even if she doesn't admit it to herself). But she definitely kept herself updated by asking Cottle and the medics how he was doing, even if she couldn't go see him herself.

For Lee, on the other hand, Sacrifice had the tentative first date with Dee....but after he got shot, she was always there for him even when his best friend wouldn't come to see him. Cue things developing further with Dee in Kara's absence...

In my head, a huge part of why the rescue mission went through at exactly that point in time was because Lee backed it as Commander of Pegasus - before that, Adama and Roslin had been vetoing it for months and even after the Pegasus first got there, why would they suddenly give it the go-ahead if there wasn't someone else giving them a push to do so? Especially when it's someone who publicly shows support for a mission that isn't even being planned on his ship?

also, the rescue mission go-ahead happens after Razor, according to chronological order of events so the double dose of guilt for nearly ordering Kara's death and the belief that they can't ever be together (after the events of Scar) because she wants someone else and also because he's dating Dee by then are part of what push Lee into supporting Kara's rescue plan, even if he doesn't actually say that to her.

Ship to Ship (http://brynnmck.livejournal.com/46471.html) by [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck is my trufax head canon for part of that time. The whole Razor and where that fits in sort of messes it up but I'm going to stubbornly stick to this because Commander Stalker and Chet are my favorite version of pilots.

I laugh out loud when I get to Commander Stalker and Chet. Like I can't re-read with anyone else in the room. In fact, I giggled just reading Chet. Chet is funny. hehehee.

well, they were on separate ships - Kara as Galactica CAG, Lee over at Pegasus - so may not have got to see as much of each other - but the beginning of that period starts with Lee pretty much giving up on Kara and focusing his relationship efforts on Dee, while Kara, who can't deal with knowing about Lee's feelings for her, throws herself into things with Sam, who's moved down to the planet surface.

But as time goes on, pilots see more of each other, what with Lee taking frequent shuttles to Galactica to report to his dad/see Dee, and sparks start flying with Kara again. Even if they just stick to eyefrakking and joking. After one particularly memorable round of this, Kara decides that she needs to move planetside while things with Lee are still happy and jokey and things with Sam are still good...and she tells Lee that she's moving.

I wrote a bit of comment!fic once (gods only know where) about how he was isolated on Pegasus and she'd go over to spar with him - which was just as fraught as anything ever was between them, even if they both had lovers. And then after she rejected him on NC, he couldn't bring himself to go anywhere near the gym or her memory. :)

They actually snapped all ties with each other - Kara goes back to Galactica once to get all her things and half-hopes to see Lee but doesn't get to, instead she bumps into Dee who's all happy and glowing while she packs to move to Pegasus, and who tells her about Lee's proposal. Not long after, Kara learns from Laura (who's still in touch with the Admiral) that Lee got married, and it hurts to know but she refuses to think about it.

Lee married Dee within weeks, if not days, of Kara's marriage, and tries to be a good husband to her but he's miserable because Kara left him and even Dee can sense that, and with nothing much to do because everyone's moving planetside, he takes to noodles.

I suspect this was a time of a lot of refusing to think about each other but dwelling on what happened between them anyway.

There's a cut scene from one of the NC episodes where Kara nearly commits suicide. I always some part of her despair was really that she'd given up hope he was coming back for her.

I've also thought that she must've thought about all the bridges she'd burned and wondered if Lee would even try to rescue her. :(

They were back on the same ship but not speaking to each other anymore (especially Lee) except when work required them to, for an entire five months. Which is why Kara took her suspicions about the fake escape from Hero to Tigh and not Lee, which is what she would have done before Groundbreaking Day.

They were finally back to being friends and having each other's backs again (and quite a bit of time passed between UB and The Passage, since we see all their scars from the dance had faded/disappeared by then), but not without crazy amounts of UST.

The whole ship noticed their repaired relationship, but it wasn't until after Kat's death that the affair actually started, with Lee trying to console Kara over Kat's loss and it suddenly turning into something...else. Of course, afterwards Kara was all bright and chipper/pretended that what they'd done wasn't really an emotional thing for her, and Lee went along with it until he couldn't.

So, this and the post-affair, pre-Maelstrom bits make of most of the story that I posted a snippet of yesterday. I just need to finish and then you'll know what I think happened ;)

we've seen that Lee tried very, very valiantly to hold it together, but he pretty much fell apart between guilt and grief, especially since he was the one who'd urged her to get back in her Viper for that final flight, and failed to protect her the way he'd promised.

And to make things worse, he didn't feel like he had the right to mourn her for what she was to him, or even to acknowledge it because they were married to other people - he couldn't let on to Dee what he was going through even if she already knew, and he couldn't let on to his dad either because his dad never knew. He just threw himself back into work after the funeral and the auction of her belongings (which he made it through, somehow) but went on falling apart inside anyway.

I think Lee did his best to be "fine" for everyone, but probably ended up spending a lot of time alone staring at that photo he had hiding in his book. I imagine he was filled with grief and regrets and had to live and act like they were just friends. I do suspect that others knew and I like to imagine that maybe he and Helo had an ambrosia and talked about her. Despite how separate they kept Helo from Kara/Lee/Sam, I suspect he'd have things to say to Lee about Kara. I also think Lee and Bill really divided over her death, the final straw, as it were (and of course we saw), but the heartbreak of their last link to Zak being gone was a pretty painful double whammy.

I'd also guess that maybe Lee prayed for the first (or second time) and begged the gods to bring her back. :( I think I wrote a fic about that once. Hmm.

This whole split makes no sense to me, so I can only imagine that Lee is in his new digs on Colonial One, or wherever he was, in a coma. He'd have to be bc that is the only way he wouldn't be on the D with Kara. IT IS UTTER FAIL.

Sorry, didn't answer your question in any realistic way because I JUST CANNOT imagine what the frak he'd be doing? "Hey the love of my life just came back alive, let me move these important papers around while she goes off and risks her life again." Nope.

:P

they saw each other off and on, and had each other's backs as CAG and President when PapAdama went off in his lone Raptor to find Laura - after which they retired to PapAdama's quarters so they (especially Lee) could voice their fears and let their guard down about being worried that he wouldn't come back, and all the while they carefully avoided speaking of the fact that they'd do it for each other in a heartbeat too, if they had the freedom - PapAdama is free to not leave the woman he loves to die, while Lee....wasn't.

wait a second, isn't this canon?

I think Lee checked in on Sam sometimes (and also of course to see how Kara was doing) and occasionally offered to sit by his bedside so she could stop beating herself up for five minutes and go get some rest, but she was so guilt-ridden, she always refused :( And she felt extra guilty because she'd saved Lee from death by bullet just hours before, but hadn't managed to do the same for Sam - and it was hard for her to be around him, those first few days after the mutiny ended.
