Date: 2012-10-11 02:40 pm (UTC)Eyes half-closed, Lee Adama slipped into the darkened house and started up the stairs. He smothered a ferocious yawn with the palm of his hand and winced as the fourth tread squeaked under his foot. He was an old hand at stealth entrances, but he’d driven the fifteen hours from Albany in just over twelve, anxious about his brother the entire way. By the time he’d gotten off the exit though, Lee had realized he barely had the energy to make it to his parents’ and he’d have to see Zak in the morning. It’s not like Zak would know the difference, he thought grimly. His gut clenched again when he thought of it. His baby brother in a coma.
Lee slipped off his leather jacket as he reached the top of the stairs and carefully turned the doorknob to his old room. He didn’t even bother to flip on the light, just stripped down to his briefs and stumbled over to the double bed. Another yawn overtook him as he slid under the covers, sighing in bliss as his head hit the pillow. Making himself comfortable, he rolled onto his side...and collided with something warm and solid.
A startled squeaking noise broke the silence and Lee froze, eyes flying open, but all he saw was a flash of motion, a blur of yellow and white, before pain exploded around his left eye, and then suddenly he was rolling again and falling with a thump onto the floor. A heavy weight landed on his chest a moment later and then suddenly there was light as the bedside lamp clicked on.
Lee blinked his good eye open, trying to focus but whoever had tackled him was hovering, face too close for him to make out any features.
“Who the hell are you?” the person--a woman, it was a woman--hissed. She had one hand around his throat, and an awfully strong grip, and for one terrible second Lee was suddenly convinced that he was going to die in his underwear on the floor of his childhood bedroom at the hands of some intruder on Christmas day.

Date: 2012-10-11 02:45 pm (UTC)...Kara hasn't taken self-defense classes since the Academy. Tentatively she shifts into a defensive position, raising her hands in front of her. “Start like this?”
Lee turns a critical eye on her, starts circling Kara. He stops behind her and nudges her right heel with the side of his foot, widening her stance. She feels the solid warmth of him at her back, and then his fingers are curving around her biceps as he repositions her, squaring off her posture, and Kara has to actually shut her eyes, her nostrils flaring. The way her body reacts to his touch is so visceral and so immediate that her knees nearly buckle. It occurs to Kara that she can’t remember the last time someone laid a hand on her without intending to do some damage.
“Hey...you OK?”
Lee’s voice is soft in her ear and Kara steels her nerves, her chin lifting and her voice edged with more impatience than she actually feels. “Yeah, yup. Let’s do this if we’re gonna do it, Apollo.”
Amazingly Lee doesn’t push, just circles around to face her and nods, then advances, reaching out as if to grab her. Kara ducks, spinning away. Energy thrums through her again, but with purpose now, as she begins to assess Lee’s movements, anticipating and dodging and striking with better timing as she remembers the way his body works. And the way hers does around him. They find a rhythm, and for a while, it’s almost like dancing.

Date: 2012-10-11 03:42 pm (UTC)He father suspected something, she was sure of it.
Or maybe this was always how he read his paper in the morning.
Why did she kiss that boy? A simple thank you would have sufficed or even a hand shake.
Maybe a quick hug, to show that she truly knew what he had done in the rescue of her scarf – after all, he did get very wet.
But a kiss? That was just too much!
Across the table the corner of her father's paper dipped, drooping down to brush the smooth wood as Papa took a sip of coffee.
What had she been thinking then? And why couldn't she stop thinking about the way his cheek dimpled when it met his mouth and gods, how could she have been so clumsy as to actually kiss part of his lips!
“Are you ready, moppet?” her father's question startled her out of her thoughts. “Ready?” she echoed.
“For our walk?” he gave her a wide smile, “It shouldn't be as windy as it was yesterday.”
Yesterday, when the wind grabbed her scarf and sent her running down the shore and into that boy.
“If it's all right, I'm going to skip the walk this morning.”
“Sure thing, sweetheart.”
Kara heard the door swing shut and immediately started to panic. He knew! He must have seen her and he was teasing her. Oh gods, to kiss a boy – and she didn't even know his name!
And even if he father didn't know, Artemis surely would. Kara had been a Daughter of Okeanos and Artemis always watched after her handmaidens, even as they got older.
That was it! Why she was feeling so guilty! It wasn't her father who knew, but the virgin goddess!
As she opened the small drawer of her bed side table Kara fell to her knees. Inside, wrapped in a length of soft flannel was the small statue of Artemis she had been given on her first day in the Pantheon chorus. Placing it gently on the table Kara began to pray, “Pardon, goddess of the night, the misdeed done by thy virgin knight.”
“Kara,” her father knocking softly at her opened door startled her from her prayers.
“There's someone I want you to meet.”
She stood up with a pang in her knees; how long had she been praying?
“I met him on my walk this morning,” her father said as they walked towards the main room of the cottage, “And I think you two might become friends.”
She stopped suddenly, shocked to see him standing in her cottage.
“This is Lee.”
Maybe she hadn't prayed enough.

Date: 2012-10-11 04:22 pm (UTC)Her last load of belongings is stowed in storage and Sam is already down on the planet as Kara prepares to leave Galactica. The prospect of living on the ground after so long in space is thrilling and she's saying her farewells to the pilots with only a hint of sadness.
And yet when she sees Lee across the hangar deck, over from Pegasus for whatever reason, all thought of Sam and New Caprica slips her mind and Kara's grinning so hard it hurts. He loves her. For just a second she's giddy.
“Starbuck!” Tigh barks off to the side, and she goes blank as she turns, remembering. How she doesn't want to ruin Lee’s life or get him killed; how she couldn't survive without him; how she broke his heart already. When she looks back Lee's heading toward the corridor to C-deck, and in spite of it all, she still follows him.
“Hey, Lee,” she calls after him as they reach an empty stretch of hallway.
He turns to her, reacting for a moment as strongly as she did, as strongly as the night they met. Then he withdraws. “What do you want?”
Words fail her for a moment. “I'm just--I'm heading down. Going away party was yesterday, got my nice little plaque, hugs and handshakes all around.” She hesitates over the last two words. “Missed you.”
He snorts in disbelief. “Well, you got everything else you wanted. That should be enough.”
Starbuck takes over, her old defense. Her tone turns to mocking “And you've got Dee, I hear she's quite something.”
“Don't even talk about her,” Apollo snaps.
“Feeling guilty?”
He shakes his head. “Frak you.”
Kara grimaces as he turns away. She doesn't know what she expected. She picked Zak, before, and he never said anything. Though she knows all the ways this is different.
“Lee,” she tries again, and he stops but doesn't turn back to her. Something about his posture just radiates pain and she can't breathe. She wants to comfort him, wants him to comfort her. It’s irrational and she has no right to it, but she broke her own heart when she broke his, and she can’t tell her husband that. He meant everything he said that night. And so did she.
He speaks to the bulkhead beyond them. “If you changed your mind, Kara, you should have told me.”
There are tears in his voice and she can't stand it. For a moment Kara can't speak. Then she tries. “I--”
Lee turns back, not wanting to hear the apology on her lips. “It was the best night of my life, Kara,” he finally growls at her, and the words are not romantic but cruel. “And you took that away.” He sees her flinch and presses on. “You did exactly what you did after Zak died. Here I was thinking, again, that you loved me, and then you got scared or whatever it is you get and you ran as far the hell away as you could. Again!” He shakes his head at her in disgust. “You said once that Zak was the only one who saw you as whole. Well, you were right. I always knew you were broken. I guess I just never knew how badly.”
With that he turns and strides away, leaving her alone.
As she flies down to New Caprica, her ties to Galactica fall away. She'll see the old man again, and Helo, and even Tigh. And she and Lee are dead to each other, so it's a good thing Kara has a fresh start all lined up. She doesn’t look back.

Date: 2012-10-11 04:43 pm (UTC)It's a companion piece with my B/S fic for it and it's set on Earth 1 with Kara and Lee finally getting a chance to talk when he comes upon her when she's trying to figure out what she is. I haven't done much with them at this point in the show so I'm curious how it goes but I like this setting for both ships to kind of clear the air.
Does that work?

A few weeks after they met, Kara showed up at Lee’s house. It was late in the evening when she arrived on her bike. Lee and his father were on their porch and Lee was reading aloud from a book.
“From the darkness you must fall. Failed and weak, to darkness all.”
Lee’s father, Bill was the first to notice her arrival. She approached quietly from the driveway listening to the enchanted words of the poem.
As Lee finished, Bill smiled at Kara “Hey look, we have a visitor”
“Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt” she replied shyly.
Bill removed his glasses and laughed “Don’t apologize, come on up here. We could use a little something here other than the smell of engine grease and tylium fumes”
Lee walked up beside Kara and placed his hand on her lower back and smiled at her.
“Dad, this Kara Thrace”
“Kara, I’m glad to meet you” he extended his hand
“Pleased to meet you too, Mr. Adama” she shook his hand
“Mr. Adama?! What do you think I’m an old man or something? You can call me Bill.”
Kara liked Lee’s father, he was warm and funny. He made her feel instantly comfortable at their home. “Well Lee does call you “the old man” all the time so I figured...” she teased.
“Old Man huh? I suppose looking at you two young people it fits. Old man it is” he laughed and he looked up to the night sky and back down at Kara “Come on now, sit down. Those clouds look like rain so you might want to stay awhile”
“Leland, she’s alot prettier than you let on” Bill teased his son.
Kara’s head whipped around to Lee behind her. “Oh really now....LELAND!” she grinned and stuck her tongue out at him and mouthed “Leland...really?”
He rolled his eyes at her and nodded in embarrassment over his full name.
“No, not really Kara. Don’t believe everything the old man says”
The three of them laughed until Bill motioned to Kara “So what do you have there with you?”
She held up the gift she brought. “I wanted to bring you something to say thank you for the invitation”
“Well let’s have a look then.” he put his hands out for the package.
Kara unwrapped the canvas and handed it to him. Bill put his glasses back on and slowly inspected the picture. It was an ocean scene, bright blue water with white crests lapping against a beautiful old wooden ship. The white sails were open and puffed up from the wind. The figurehead at the prow of the ship was a golden angel whose wings wrapped around the bow. The ship’s name “Aurora” was scripted under her wings.
Bill looked up at Kara “Did you do this?” he asked.
She nodded “Yes, Lee told me about your collection of model ships and that the Aurora was your favorite ship from the ancient Kobol war so I looked her up at the library.”
“It’s beautiful.” He praised. “I know exactly where we can hang it too. Thank you Kara.”
Lee smiled at his father and Kara. Happy to see the two of them get along so easily.
Kara was beaming. She turned back to Lee “That poem you were reading was lovely. Who was it?”
“Kataris” he answered

Date: 2012-10-11 08:09 pm (UTC)Bill chimed back in “See when Lee was little he used to stutter real bad. It made him awfully shy and he barely liked to talk outside the house”
“I had a stammer, it wasn’t that bad” Lee argued.
His father rolled his eyes “Stutter, stammer...what’s the difference? Problem was he wouldn’t talk much and when he did you couldn’t understand him. He was frustrated and we didn’t have much money to bring him into Caprica City to see a fancy specialist so I got him to read me poetry out loud”
“I grabbed the Kataris and made him sit out here every night reading them over and over until he could properly pronounce every word. Once he could get through a whole piece without a problem I would mark the date and his age in the margin and move on to the next poem. The more he read the more he talked, the more he talked, the more the stutter would go away. It wasn’t pretty at first but it worked. He would always go back to his favorites and we would make notes and discuss what they meant.”
Kara was surprised, Lee had never let on to any speech difficulties. She was impressed by his father’s remedy. “Wow, the poetry was a great idea”
Bill smiled “I thought so”
Lee blushed and shook his head “Unbelievable, are there no secrets between father and son?”
“You should thank me son. Without Kataris, you may never have been able to speak to your lovely young lady at all.” Bill grinned and turned to Kara “So do you want to come in for breakfast?”
“Dad it’s 10 at night” Lee interrupted
“So? What does that have to do with it? You can have pancakes any damn time you want.” He looked back at Kara “So breakfast?”
She smiled at him and stood up “Sure!”
Bill paused at the screen door with the painting in one hand and the handle in the other. He looked out into the dark front yard and stopped to listen.
Both Lee and Kara stopped in their tracks and watched the old man.
He looked to Lee and then to Kara. “Hey Kara, what do you hear?”
Kara looked out into the night and then back to Bill. She closed her eyes quickly and that’s when she heard it the quiet rhythm of the rain tapping against the roof
She smiled “Nothing but the rain, sir”
A wide grin broke out on his face as he opened the screen door and motioned for her to come in the house. “Well grab your gun and bring in the cat”
