Everyone's busy and things have been getting quieter on LJ in general, so let's stoke our fandom fires a little! Post a sneak preview snippet of anything (or several things) pilots-related that you're working on. Ideas for a vid, sketches or partial drawings, sentences or paragraphs from fic--whatever! It's all good! Show 'em if you got 'em!

Pilots can't wait to see what you've got!

He father suspected something, she was sure of it.

Or maybe this was always how he read his paper in the morning.

Why did she kiss that boy? A simple thank you would have sufficed or even a hand shake.

Maybe a quick hug, to show that she truly knew what he had done in the rescue of her scarf – after all, he did get very wet.

But a kiss? That was just too much!

Across the table the corner of her father's paper dipped, drooping down to brush the smooth wood as Papa took a sip of coffee.

What had she been thinking then? And why couldn't she stop thinking about the way his cheek dimpled when it met his mouth and gods, how could she have been so clumsy as to actually kiss part of his lips!

“Are you ready, moppet?” her father's question startled her out of her thoughts. “Ready?” she echoed.

“For our walk?” he gave her a wide smile, “It shouldn't be as windy as it was yesterday.”

Yesterday, when the wind grabbed her scarf and sent her running down the shore and into that boy.

“If it's all right, I'm going to skip the walk this morning.”

“Sure thing, sweetheart.”

Kara heard the door swing shut and immediately started to panic. He knew! He must have seen her and he was teasing her. Oh gods, to kiss a boy – and she didn't even know his name!

And even if he father didn't know, Artemis surely would. Kara had been a Daughter of Okeanos and Artemis always watched after her handmaidens, even as they got older.

That was it! Why she was feeling so guilty! It wasn't her father who knew, but the virgin goddess!

As she opened the small drawer of her bed side table Kara fell to her knees. Inside, wrapped in a length of soft flannel was the small statue of Artemis she had been given on her first day in the Pantheon chorus. Placing it gently on the table Kara began to pray, “Pardon, goddess of the night, the misdeed done by thy virgin knight.”

“Kara,” her father knocking softly at her opened door startled her from her prayers.

“There's someone I want you to meet.”

She stood up with a pang in her knees; how long had she been praying?

“I met him on my walk this morning,” her father said as they walked towards the main room of the cottage, “And I think you two might become friends.”

She stopped suddenly, shocked to see him standing in her cottage.

“This is Lee.”

Maybe she hadn't prayed enough.

This is from a multi-chapter piece that I started more than a year ago. I'm going to try to finish it for the Pentathalon if I have time. It refers a little bit to my story Prologue, which is my head pre-canon, but you don't need to have read that. PG rating, but major angst warning :)

Her last load of belongings is stowed in storage and Sam is already down on the planet as Kara prepares to leave Galactica. The prospect of living on the ground after so long in space is thrilling and she's saying her farewells to the pilots with only a hint of sadness.

And yet when she sees Lee across the hangar deck, over from Pegasus for whatever reason, all thought of Sam and New Caprica slips her mind and Kara's grinning so hard it hurts. He loves her. For just a second she's giddy.

“Starbuck!” Tigh barks off to the side, and she goes blank as she turns, remembering. How she doesn't want to ruin Lee’s life or get him killed; how she couldn't survive without him; how she broke his heart already. When she looks back Lee's heading toward the corridor to C-deck, and in spite of it all, she still follows him.

“Hey, Lee,” she calls after him as they reach an empty stretch of hallway.

He turns to her, reacting for a moment as strongly as she did, as strongly as the night they met. Then he withdraws. “What do you want?”

Words fail her for a moment. “I'm just--I'm heading down. Going away party was yesterday, got my nice little plaque, hugs and handshakes all around.” She hesitates over the last two words. “Missed you.”

He snorts in disbelief. “Well, you got everything else you wanted. That should be enough.”

Starbuck takes over, her old defense. Her tone turns to mocking “And you've got Dee, I hear she's quite something.”

“Don't even talk about her,” Apollo snaps.

“Feeling guilty?”

He shakes his head. “Frak you.”

Kara grimaces as he turns away. She doesn't know what she expected. She picked Zak, before, and he never said anything. Though she knows all the ways this is different.

“Lee,” she tries again, and he stops but doesn't turn back to her. Something about his posture just radiates pain and she can't breathe. She wants to comfort him, wants him to comfort her. It’s irrational and she has no right to it, but she broke her own heart when she broke his, and she can’t tell her husband that. He meant everything he said that night. And so did she.

He speaks to the bulkhead beyond them. “If you changed your mind, Kara, you should have told me.”

There are tears in his voice and she can't stand it. For a moment Kara can't speak. Then she tries. “I--”

Lee turns back, not wanting to hear the apology on her lips. “It was the best night of my life, Kara,” he finally growls at her, and the words are not romantic but cruel. “And you took that away.” He sees her flinch and presses on. “You did exactly what you did after Zak died. Here I was thinking, again, that you loved me, and then you got scared or whatever it is you get and you ran as far the hell away as you could. Again!” He shakes his head at her in disgust. “You said once that Zak was the only one who saw you as whole. Well, you were right. I always knew you were broken. I guess I just never knew how badly.”

With that he turns and strides away, leaving her alone.

As she flies down to New Caprica, her ties to Galactica fall away. She'll see the old man again, and Helo, and even Tigh. And she and Lee are dead to each other, so it's a good thing Kara has a fresh start all lined up. She doesn’t look back.

Not yet started, but here's my K/L idea for the pentathlon.

It's a companion piece with my B/S fic for it and it's set on Earth 1 with Kara and Lee finally getting a chance to talk when he comes upon her when she's trying to figure out what she is. I haven't done much with them at this point in the show so I'm curious how it goes but I like this setting for both ships to kind of clear the air.

Does that work?

This is a crossover piece with the movie "The Notebook" that has been sitting for way way over a year on my hard drive. Originally started for the "Reel Pilots" movie crossover comm challenge, I got about halfway through it and stalled but this is probably my favorite scene. It's where Kara (Allie) meets Lee's (Noah) dad for the first time. Super rough and not edited or anything so please excuse any horrible-ness!

1/2 - because LJ comment limit!

A few weeks after they met, Kara showed up at Lee’s house. It was late in the evening when she arrived on her bike. Lee and his father were on their porch and Lee was reading aloud from a book.

“From the darkness you must fall. Failed and weak, to darkness all.”

Lee’s father, Bill was the first to notice her arrival. She approached quietly from the driveway listening to the enchanted words of the poem.

As Lee finished, Bill smiled at Kara “Hey look, we have a visitor”

“Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt” she replied shyly.

Bill removed his glasses and laughed “Don’t apologize, come on up here. We could use a little something here other than the smell of engine grease and tylium fumes”

Lee walked up beside Kara and placed his hand on her lower back and smiled at her.

“Dad, this Kara Thrace”

“Kara, I’m glad to meet you” he extended his hand

“Pleased to meet you too, Mr. Adama” she shook his hand

“Mr. Adama?! What do you think I’m an old man or something? You can call me Bill.”

Kara liked Lee’s father, he was warm and funny. He made her feel instantly comfortable at their home. “Well Lee does call you “the old man” all the time so I figured...” she teased.

“Old Man huh? I suppose looking at you two young people it fits. Old man it is” he laughed and he looked up to the night sky and back down at Kara “Come on now, sit down. Those clouds look like rain so you might want to stay awhile”

“Leland, she’s alot prettier than you let on” Bill teased his son.

Kara’s head whipped around to Lee behind her. “Oh really now....LELAND!” she grinned and stuck her tongue out at him and mouthed “Leland...really?”

He rolled his eyes at her and nodded in embarrassment over his full name.

“No, not really Kara. Don’t believe everything the old man says”

The three of them laughed until Bill motioned to Kara “So what do you have there with you?”

She held up the gift she brought. “I wanted to bring you something to say thank you for the invitation”

“Well let’s have a look then.” he put his hands out for the package.

Kara unwrapped the canvas and handed it to him. Bill put his glasses back on and slowly inspected the picture. It was an ocean scene, bright blue water with white crests lapping against a beautiful old wooden ship. The white sails were open and puffed up from the wind. The figurehead at the prow of the ship was a golden angel whose wings wrapped around the bow. The ship’s name “Aurora” was scripted under her wings.

Bill looked up at Kara “Did you do this?” he asked.

She nodded “Yes, Lee told me about your collection of model ships and that the Aurora was your favorite ship from the ancient Kobol war so I looked her up at the library.”

“It’s beautiful.” He praised. “I know exactly where we can hang it too. Thank you Kara.”

Lee smiled at his father and Kara. Happy to see the two of them get along so easily.

Kara was beaming. She turned back to Lee “That poem you were reading was lovely. Who was it?”

“Kataris” he answered

Part 2/2

Bill chimed back in “See when Lee was little he used to stutter real bad. It made him awfully shy and he barely liked to talk outside the house”

“I had a stammer, it wasn’t that bad” Lee argued.

His father rolled his eyes “Stutter, stammer...what’s the difference? Problem was he wouldn’t talk much and when he did you couldn’t understand him. He was frustrated and we didn’t have much money to bring him into Caprica City to see a fancy specialist so I got him to read me poetry out loud”

“I grabbed the Kataris and made him sit out here every night reading them over and over until he could properly pronounce every word. Once he could get through a whole piece without a problem I would mark the date and his age in the margin and move on to the next poem. The more he read the more he talked, the more he talked, the more the stutter would go away. It wasn’t pretty at first but it worked. He would always go back to his favorites and we would make notes and discuss what they meant.”

Kara was surprised, Lee had never let on to any speech difficulties. She was impressed by his father’s remedy. “Wow, the poetry was a great idea”

Bill smiled “I thought so”

Lee blushed and shook his head “Unbelievable, are there no secrets between father and son?”

“You should thank me son. Without Kataris, you may never have been able to speak to your lovely young lady at all.” Bill grinned and turned to Kara “So do you want to come in for breakfast?”

“Dad it’s 10 at night” Lee interrupted

“So? What does that have to do with it? You can have pancakes any damn time you want.” He looked back at Kara “So breakfast?”

She smiled at him and stood up “Sure!”

Bill paused at the screen door with the painting in one hand and the handle in the other. He looked out into the dark front yard and stopped to listen.

Both Lee and Kara stopped in their tracks and watched the old man.

He looked to Lee and then to Kara. “Hey Kara, what do you hear?”

Kara looked out into the night and then back to Bill. She closed her eyes quickly and that’s when she heard it the quiet rhythm of the rain tapping against the roof

She smiled “Nothing but the rain, sir”

A wide grin broke out on his face as he opened the screen door and motioned for her to come in the house. “Well grab your gun and bring in the cat”

Zak's Coin (non-canon character death)

Date: 2012-10-11 11:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] scifishipper.livejournal.com
The beginning of a fic I couldn't find an end for. Based on someone's prompt from somewhere I can't remember. #hazybrain

Kara stands in front of Lee's locker, fingers shaking as she reaches out to slide the latch and pop it open. It's just as she expects, uniforms in a neat row, everything else folded and in its place, the locker of a perfect soldier, ready for an inspection that will never come.

It seems wrong to auction off Lee's things, but it's tradition – even for the Admiral’s son. With a short intake of breath, she puts her hand across the invisible barrier between the locker and the room to slide the hangars to the side.

Like everyone else, the most valuable items are in at the bottom in a bag or a box or wrapped in something that no one would want. Stealing rarely happens on a battlestar, but the ends of the worlds change a lot.

Kneeling down, Kara reaches in, fingers touching the cool metal at the back of the locker and then the stiff edge something else wedged against the side. It’s a plain military-issue envelope, the kind she sees every day with a column of names written and then scratched out with pen. Kara touches Lee’s name, Maj Adama, written in the Admiral’s tiny print before she pulls at the string closure, unwinding slowly, feeling guilty and sad at the same time.

Tipping the envelope she lets the contents slide into her palm, one she recognizes immediately, Dee's wedding ring and the other less familiar, but somehow stirring a long-forgotten memory.

(storyline completely stolen from Arang and the Magistrate and not going to be worked on for a while because, er, it hasn't finished airing yet **sheepish**)

Basically, it's the story of a ghost with no memories of her human self who manages to trick a young man who can see ghosts into taking a job that'll let him investigate her death. He's passing through town on his way to look for his missing mother and wants nothing at all to do with pesky ghosts.

I haven't quite figured out how to pilotise it, especially since I can't set it in god-knows-how-many-centuries-ago Korea. Also, the magistrate's initial job acceptance is kind of forced - he's hog-tied in a haunted house by the local Big Bad's minions who really, really need that magistrate's office filled (and the only qualification needed for the job is a pulse in the morning, lol). Plus there's an old crank Lord of the Underworld and a cutie-pie Lord of Heaven who take a personal interest in the whole thing...

Pub Crawl

From: [identity profile] scifishipper.livejournal.com
Another fic that went nowhere, although now that I read it, I really should just write some drunken wall sex. Mmmhmm. *nods*

Kara's four drinks up on him when the room begins to spin and the drink he's about to take doesn't seem like a good idea any more.

"I think I'm drunk," he slurs, managing to put an S in the middle of the sentence.

Kara laughs and throws an arm around his shoulders, her ambrosia breath on his cheek. "You're a lightweight, Adama. Knew it the moment I saw you at Charlie's." He thinks she might be slurring too, but maybe it's his ears.

A moment later her words penetrate his drunken brain and he tries to look at her but she's too close, so he stares at the arm she has flung on the table in front of him. "Charlie's? I thought we'd never met."

She leans closer, their faces nearly touching. "I never said that we met, just that I saw you." She leans away and takes a swig of ambrosia.

He can't help the smile spreading across his face and he turns, leaning in, the drink making him bold. "Like what you see, Cadet Thrace?"

Kara's mouth quirks up, eyes skimming his face and chest. “Maybe.”

Untitled AU starting from Zak's POV

Date: 2012-10-12 01:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kdbleu.livejournal.com
I wrote this on the train last week. I don't know where it came from. Or where it's going particularly. But since I got it into the computer, I thought I'd share. ;)

Zak Adama almost leaves the military all together after he fails basic flight. All washouts have the option. Zak takes the week they’ve given him off between finals and announcing placements for the final year at the Academy, and for the first time, away from the pressure of his father and brother, he makes up his own mind.

He goes back, becomes a tactical officer and qualifies as an ECO in addition. He’s happy, but alone. Giving up flying means losing Lee and his father. Though none of the men mean for it to be that way. Kara, he already lost. He just wishes his mother would go away.

“Have you talked to Lee?” Carolanne asks sliding pancakes on to his plate, just like she does every time he’s home on Caprica. Zak shakes his head, glad she waited until his second morning, a record for her. Even more glad for a shining moment when she moves the conversation in another direction.

“You’re invitation to the Decommissioning came while you were in orbit.” Carolanne holds up the card, and his heart sinks. Zak wonders if she uses the wrong term ‘in orbit’ instead of ‘off world’ on purpose or because she doesn’t understand. Zak might not be on a battlestar or even one of the smaller military cruisers, but the space station is almost more important. He’s off world just the same, not looping like a satellite broadcasting to the telly.

“Thanks, Mom,” he doesn’t know what else to say. Talking about Bill Adama is worse than talking about Lee.

“I RSVPed for you,” she continues cheerfully, and Zak freezes, fork half way t his mouth. “You weren’t going to be back in time, and you should go.”

“No, Mom, I can’t.”

“You need to talk to both of them. They’d be just as proud of you as I am.”

“No, they won’t.” A man’s not a man until he wears the wings of a viper pilot. The words play through Zak’s head as he chews his breakfast. Lee wears the wings. As does his father. Zak should stay away.

*****

But soon enough, Zak Adama is packing anyway. Then he’s sitting on the transport, plotting out how to deal with his father, his brother, even Kara. He doesn’t even try to figure out how she ended up on his father’s ship. He only knows he’s been avoiding all of them since those weeks two years ago when his life turned upside-down. And now he’s going to have to see them. All of them…

**Tiny bit of background. This first part, before the faux break, is a dream set toward the end of the chapter followed by Starbuck waking in her bunk. It's not much, but I'm working on a 3rd chapter already and mapped out a good 7 chapters. I've started hammering away at it again and hope to have it done by 2020. Er. Hopefully sooner.

------

Bare feet padding across cold metal flooring.

Dressed in an old nylon nightgown; a rip running to mid-thigh, dirty at the edges.

Rain blows in from somewhere.

The nervous twitch of eyes trying to find whatever is lurking nearby, but unable to run. Heart fluttering like a trapped bird in her chest.

Stopping dead when Leoben appears at the end of a suddenly existing corridor calling to her, an ugly smile on his face. Even though the only thing she hears is the absence of sound, she knows exactly what he’s saying.

The warmth emanating from a body pressed against her back.

Leoben’s smile turns uncertain.

Night dress fluttering against cold legs, she whirls to find Lee looking down at her with too long hair and an unbuttoned uniform coat.

His hand rises to her cheek, swiping a thumb under her eye.

Everything begins to run together.

Slowly leaning forward, bodies pressed together, she can hear the raindrops slapping metal surfaces as he breathes ‘I love you’ against the shell of her ear.

The blade slides smoothly into her gut and she can almost feel the sick gliding of every inch of the knife through flesh.

He’s watching her face, her eyes, but they only widen slightly in surprise. Wrapping her hands over his on the hilt she can feel a tremor running through him.

She looks down to see blood blooming across their clasped hands, dripping with the rain onto the floor and their feet. She returns her gaze to him.

“Deeper,” she says softly as she presses her hands against his, against the hilt, into her body.

---------

She's on her back in her bunk, blankets twisted around her legs and a warm, a solid body leaning over her. The soft light of ship’s night slanting sideways through her curtain striping across his face.

“Shhh Kara,” he says, voice hushed. “You’re - ,”

She pulls him toward her, body rushing up to meet him.

“Stay with me. Real, not real. I don't care right now.” The panic is pressing against her chest like it’s trying to crush her. “Just stay with me tonight,” she breathes. “Please. Stay.”

It’s like lightning flashes across her senses.

He makes an indignant noise that is swallowed up by her hot mouth.

His body flush with hers in the bunk.

Their clothes gone.

Her fingers dig into his shoulders.
