We've imagined pilots a ton of different ways in AUs, but today I want us to try out a new way (or maybe not even that new, but certainly worth revisiting): Pilots as Superheroes!

I mean, don't they look iconic and superheroic here:

So what would they be like as superheroes, Shipper Nation? Any theories about what superpowers they'd have? Or how they came by them/origin stories? Or how they ended up working together in the first place (cause the only thing better than a superhero is a superhero team)

(And of course, the evils they'd have to face/conquer, because what is a superhero without those? The same goes for their costumes - what would you have them wear when they're in save-the-world mode? Catsuits? Capes?)

Any ideas, people? Put them in the comments! (along with fic, fic recs, gifs, manips, what have you)

(edit: [livejournal.com profile] rachelindeed has written this AWESOME pilots crossover with the Batman 'verse in the comments here, everyone should read it!)

Batman fic amnesty scene: part 1

Batman was still seated at the head of the surgical table, but now his body bent over Lee’s in a mangled, inverted hug. His head rested upside-down on Lee’s shoulder, the sharp tip of his earpiece digging a white pressure point into the hollow of Lee’s throat. One arm extended, he had lined up their hands, palm to palm. Both were battered and calloused, and though Batman’s palm and wrist had slightly greater width than Lee’s, their fingertips met end to end. Slowly, disbelievingly, Batman lifted his other hand from Lee’s hair and reached up to trace the symmetrical lines of their fingers.

He remembered when Lee’s hands had been so small.

Lee’s head drifted slowly to one side, his mouth contorting a bit. His forehead contracted, pain lines marking the return of consciousness. He let out a low groan.

“You’re all right, son,” Batman said, raising his head and looking down to meet Lee’s eyes as they opened.

Lee blinked groggily at him. “Son?” he echoed. “I must have cut it close this time.”

The pocked, scarred jaw under Batman’s mask tightened. “You’re always asking more of me, Lee. But whenever I try to give, you won’t take.” He pulled back and started to stand.

With an uncoordinated swipe, Lee fumbled to catch his arm. “I’m sorry.”

“Not sorry enough. I told you to stay out of this town and out of that batsuit.”

“I don’t take orders from you anymore.”

“You don’t belong on the streets, and I was a fool ever to have put you there. Next time you decide to get yourself killed, I might not be around to save you.”

“I didn’t need you to save me, The Huntress was doing just fine. So don’t do me any favors…”

“Shut your yaps, the both of you!” Tigh swept in from the Batcave’s stairwell, his tie and jacket missing, spots of blood edging his shirt cuff. “I swear, I can’t leave you alone for two minutes. Bill, go get out of that costume right now, I’m not gonna deal with you until you look like a human being. Lee, lie down and calm down, because I’ve patched you up for the last time tonight. If you do any more damage to yourself you can bloody well sit there and suffer, ‘cause I’m done with pampering your ass. Move!”

Tigh checked Lee’s IV while Bill disappeared up the stairs, then wordlessly reached out to rest a hand on Lee’s pillow, a good five inches away from any touch.

“Hey, it’s okay.” Lee murmured. “It’s okay.”

“Shut up,” Tigh said. “And you, get over here and make yourself useful.”

Lee blinked in surprise as The Huntress emerged from the cave’s shadows.

“Hey,” he greeted. “You made it.”

“Surprise, surprise.”

“Kara.”

“Lee.”

He winced. “Mm. One of these days I’ll learn not to give out sensitive personal information during near-death experiences. Always comes back to bite me. But still, nice to finally have a name to go with your face.”

“Likewise. So…your Dad’s a piece of work.”

“He’s not my Dad.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Not biologically, anyway. I’m an orphan – he took me in.” Lee sighed. “Took me in, trained me up, threw me out. The classic, heartwarming story.”

“Seems like he cares about you.”

“Oh, we’re fine whenever I’m dying. It’s living with me he can’t deal with.”

“I’m not totally up on the hero code, but shouldn’t he be proud of you?”

“He wants a good soldier who follows orders without question. I’ve been giving him trouble in that department for awhile.”

“So, basically you were raised by a control freak, and now you’re getting your own back. No offense, but I could have guessed that much after knowing you for five minutes.”

“Control’s not a bad thing. There are a lot of maniacs out there. A lot of chances to die.” He looked up with a wicked light in his eyes. “A lot of morally-compromised, seductive women out to lure us from the path of righteousness.”

“Misogyny’s not a good look for you.”

“I was only teasing. You’re the opposite of seductive, actually.”

“Oh, thanks.”

“No, I mean it. You make people care without trying to. That’s not seduction, it’s…well, whatever it is, it’s in a whole different league.”

Oooh, so many possibilities here! Any chance of the backstory to this moment and going forward?

I kind of love this to teeny tiny bits. (Yes, it helped that you cast Kara as one of my very very favourite DCU characters)

Yay!! So glad you enjoyed :) I love your icon! Plus, Nightwing/Huntress is canon, baby, I don't even have to work for it.

And normally I'm nominally on the side of Nightwing/Oracle. But here, totally. Nightwing/Huntress all the way. Not sure who's Renee Montoya in this situation...

Hee! I pick up all my DC stuff straight from fanfic, so I have gaps in my comic book knowledge, and I'm afraid Montoya is one of them :) But yes, in the actual DC verse, Dick and Barbara are wonderful.

P.S. -- you might like the little prequel (http://rachelindeed.livejournal.com/13488.html), if you haven't run across it already :)

See, I got totally hooked on Greg Rucka comics and then just followed the characters who interested me. Which meant lots of Huntress and Renee and Kate Kane. I haven't found much DC fic that suits me though. Any recs?

I've mostly followed the Batfamily, so I haven't read too many fics with your favorite characters, I'm afraid. But one DC fic I would recommend to anyone is Jason and Me (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1822373/1/Jason-and-Me). It's a story about Stephanie Brown, who was briefly the 4th Robin, invesigating the history of her predecessors. I just love the voice it gives to her character, and I look on it as a much needed love letter/manifesto to all those 'unpopular' characters out there who get too easily dismissed by canon and fandom. I find the story here very poignant.
