DPP: What if...
Jul. 30th, 2012 06:44 amWhat if… this were real?

(There’s a certain willful suspension of disbelief that goes along with this discussion. Because you can’t rely on the idea that Lee and Kara were doomed from the beginning by RDM. For this discussion you have to assume that there is the real possibility that Kara and Lee could be a real couple in the run of the series.)
What happens if Kara slept with Lee instead of Baltar on Colonial Day?
Starting while I first watched YCGHA, I started mapping out how I would have made Kara and Lee a real couple while at the same time keeping them apart and interesting.

Date: 2012-07-30 02:49 pm (UTC)Would have been a zillion times more interesting, imo.

Date: 2012-07-30 04:09 pm (UTC)But I can imagine plenty of ways they'd have conflict as a couple though: residual guilt/fear/angst over Zak; whether or not to tell Bill (or tell anyone!); Lee siding with Laura v. Kara siding with Bill on things; CAG v. flight instructor disagreements; Lee's latent ambitions/depression; Kara's daredevil/hotheaded/commitmentphobic ways; being separated during a Pegasus arc; fighting over whether to settle or not on New Caprica, etc.

Date: 2012-07-30 04:36 pm (UTC)It would have been a whole different story, though. I mean, assuming the writers would either leave them remain a stablished couple till the end (with all the difficulties of relationships in general and life on the run/in wartime) or that their individual issues would somehow keep them apart without soap-opera like drama (in the form of poorly thought out love poligons).

Date: 2012-07-30 05:25 pm (UTC)Relationship-wise, though, I think that if they'd had that moment of acknowledging physically or aloud that they both recognized the tension between them, the rest of their story would have been different. Not that there wouldn't have been angst or drama, but it wouldn't have come as often from a place of misconception or mistrust.

Date: 2012-07-30 05:27 pm (UTC)But I love all your potential obsticles. Lee's depression and ambitions is personal favorite especially coupled with Kara's hothead/commitmentphobic ways.

Date: 2012-07-30 05:35 pm (UTC)You weren't supposed to notice that. ;P Actually sometimes when I ponder this particular shift I try to get as many of the plot points to line up anyway. Like maybe Kara still goes back to Caprica but Lee helps her get away, leads the mutiny as a distraction in part, that kind of thing. RE-writing BSG is one of my favorite hobbies. Ignore me. lol

But this is exactly my point. Lee and Kara never would have been an easy couple even if they acknowledged how they felt. I think that could have been just an interesting a story.

Date: 2012-07-30 05:39 pm (UTC)This is precisely my theory and one of my major gripes about TV couples. I think you could tell a perfectly viable and interesting story about a couple that wants to be together but can't for reasons both beyond their control and because of things they need to work out for themselves and between each other.

I really don't get why that is so difficult.

Oh. Whoops. I always forget rule reading. Ha! Anyways, fine then if the early sexing leads to 'them-ness' of the secret & constantly on/off variety, that would be an interesting story to me. To be honest, just about every variation of Lee/Kara would have been interesting to me so . . .
For now that's where I'm at. In five minutes, I'll decide any lap hugs before New Caprica is the worst idea ever idea'd. ;p

Date: 2012-07-30 08:02 pm (UTC)I mean, the epic blowout of KLG1 was what cemented me 100% firmly into the 'PILOTS OR NOTHING' camp because that was when I really knew how epic they were going to be and how much they'd have to overcome to be together, and I kind of love it for that (my stupid hopeful self, lol).
But I could absolutely be down with them frakking and then one or both of them freaking out completely/trying to dismiss it (I think this more of Kara than Lee). And then coming back for more, and becoming fuck buddies who never, ever talk about that part of their relationship because they just have too many FEELINGS? I could so be down with that. Or even if they pull a 'this never happened' either.
Other plot details that happen as a result of their actions can be resolved in other ways, but the frakking, GUH.

Date: 2012-07-30 08:08 pm (UTC)(and I would SO be down with an on-again/off-again relationship post-frak, especially if they're struggling to keep professional/personal boundaries etc, or be friends to each other while also being frak buddies)

Date: 2012-07-30 09:28 pm (UTC)Kara sleeps with Lee, freaks out, runs to Caprica.
You still have the Caprician Resistance/Sam arc, you would still have the mission back (because even if Sam wasn't Kara's Tuw Luv, she would still want to keep her promise and get those people off of Caprica), you still have New Cap.
You just get to have hot Pilot!Sex, which would leave to even more tension (cus with pilots it's not the sex, it's everything else that causes the tension).

Date: 2012-07-30 10:21 pm (UTC)All you have to do is tweek the UB vibe, only without directly involving other people. YAY! Lee and Kara have enough issues.

Date: 2012-07-30 10:57 pm (UTC)I could totally see that. Maybe you could even have them sleep together earlier in Colonial Day and then she freaks out (Lee might've even said he loved her or something like that during?) and sleeps with Baltar (ew) anyway. Then you still get everything, you could even keep the fake out sex!
