I won't even pretend like today's DPP is not directly inspired by the screening of The Dark Knight Rises I just returned from, and the question is a simple one - can you ever see pilots in a story/fandom that isn't BSG?

I know the answer is yes for many of us, so I'm making today our day to talk about crossovers and AU - the other settings you'd like to pop pilots into, and the potential you see for them there. (my favourite is a crossover of pilots with Buffy, but I'd love to hear about less well-known/obvious settings to put pilots in)

And of course, as always, feel free to make recs and start discussion of crossover or AU fic you've read/written/are thinking of writing! The same goes for fanart too :)

Ha! I never noticed, but it looks like they both close their eyes when they shoot in that GIF. So in synch! ;)

I just tweeted the other day that I want someone to write speakeasy fic with bar owner Kara and prohibition enforcer (until she debauches him) Lee. ;)

YES, PLEASE!! Oooh, Lee as a self-righteous Eliot Ness... Or even better, a Roy Olmstead type, who was a rising star in the Seattle police, a lieutenant, who started his own rum-running business on the side and quit the police after he was caught and fined. He went onto control most of the rum running in the Pacific NW. I must say I have a lot of sympathy for the rum runners as my great-grandfather was a convicted (but pardoned!) rum runner who served a term in McNeil Federal Prison at the same time as Olmstead.

The section on Olmstead in Ken Burns' Prohibition was one of the best: http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/prohibition/media_detail/2082733861-olmstead/

Yup, isn't it awesome? He and a "colleague" were caught running rum in a very fancy speedboat from Canada to Bellingham, WA. Once he got out of MacNeil Federal Prison(he served two years), he moved to LA for work as his very respectable inlaws wanted him out of town where he couldn't embarrass them. He went legit after that, worked in the movie industry as a gaffer / prop guy, wasn't allowed to join the union as he was Jewish (said it was the best thing that ever happened to him), and then went into the scrap metal business selling used oil pipeline from the SoCal oil fields to farmers in Arizona. Total shark to the end and became a big player in the scrap business. Sadly I never met him and he was embarrassed enough by his youthful mistakes that he didn't talk about it much with my dad. I did manage to uncover his presidential pardon (no, politics have not changed since the 1950s - people always gave lame duck presidents campaign $$$ to pardon them for the idiocy of their youth). Unfortunately the Federal Bureau of Prisons destroyed his file when he was pardoned, so other than his affidavit of what he did, I ran into a brick wall that even much historical research mojo from my thesis research could not unlock.

And yes, that's my totally adorable dog, Bristow. Do you know DQ gives free vanilla cones to dogs? Perfect for those super hot days when you're white, cute as a bug, and way too fluffy for the weather.

Ooh look you've done the research already! Clearly you should write this. ;) **nods**

*snort* Writing fiction is so beyond my talents - historical research, yes, undergrad thesis, yes, but fiction, I only wish. :-) Happy to offer assistance with the research or historical beta reading though!

Hee! I've written a Buffy AU (http://rachelindeed.livejournal.com/9275.html) and a Batman AU (http://rachelindeed.livejournal.com/13488.html), so I definitely agree with both your suggestions :)

I think they can crossover with almost anything, honestly. Mythological crossovers are ones I see most often, but we've gotten everything from figure skating to Fight Club. The LJ comm reelpilots (it has a link on the sidebar) is a fun crossover resource.
