Hello pilotshippers, and welcome to this week's DPP!

To start with, here's something simple: we all know pilots are ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE among fictional couples - there has never been anyone quite like them, and probably never will be again.

But even if no one can replicate their magic, I want to ask the question: have you ever been reminded of them by other fictional couples, even in a small way? Have certain elements/moments in the relationship of pilots ever reminded you of anyone else you've read/watched?

Or am I just crazy for even thinking of them as comparable to other couples at all?

Ha! <3333333333333333333333

I tend to think of warrior couple comparisons, like Aeryn/John, and my current obsession, but Mary/Matthew from Downton Abbey also totally fit the bill.

But even so, with the aforementioned, the K/L dynamic and baggage is so specific to the two of them that while I find other couples similar, it usually doesn't merit strong comparision. Does that make any sense? So with the others, I love them on their own terms, but not in a replace-my-pilots kind of way (b/c that's just not possible, yo.)

OMG and don't forget the Dead Folks Issues with Lavinia! And traumatic rejections of proposals/confessions of lurve due to FEELINGS! And then coming back together as friends, and then being awesomely there for each other and still so piney and illict kissage and...

Wow. Yes, in some ways, they are probably the most similar of any couple I've seen.

The closest thing I can recently think of, and I was introduced to the books on this very premise by mserrada, is Katniss and Gale with the Peeta triangle.

How about this scene from The English Patient? (It takes place just after their affair begins.)

INT. BATHROOM. DAY.

Almásy is in the bath. Katharine, wearing his dressing gown,
pours in a jug of steaming water. Almásy leans over the rim
of the bath. He's sewing, carefully repairing the torn
dress.

KATHARINE
I'm impressed you can sew.

ALMÁSY
Good.

KATHARINE
You sew very badly.

ALMÁSY
You don't sew at all!

KATHARINE
A woman should never learn to sew,
and if she can she should never
admit to it. Close your eyes.

ALMÁSY
(laughs)
That makes it harder still.

She pushes the sewing from his hands, then pours water over
his head, then begins to shampoo his hair.

Almásy is in heaven. The biggest smile we have seen from
him. She continues to massage his scalp.

ALMÁSY (CONT'D)
When were you most happy?

KATHARINE
Now.

ALMÁSY
When were you least happy?

KATHARINE
(a beat)
Now.

ALMÁSY
Okay. And what do you love? Say
everything.

KATHARINE
What do I love? I love rice
pudding, and water, the fish in it,
hedgehogs! The gardens at our house
in Freshwater - all my secret
paths.

She rinses his scalp, then slips off the robe and CLIMBS IN
BESIDE HIM, covering his neck and shoulders in kisses.

ALMÁSY
What else?

KATHARINE
Marmite - addicted! Baths - not
with other people! Islands. Your
handwriting. I could go on all
day.
(a beat)
My husband. Almásy nods.

ALMÁSY
What do you hate most?

KATHARINE
A lie. What do you hate most?

ALMÁSY
Ownership. Being owned. When you
leave, you should forget me.

She freezes, pulls herself away, out of the bath, looks at
him, then SLAPS HIM VERY HARD across the face.

She picks up her dress, the thread and needle dangling from
it, and walks, dripping, out of the room.

Mmmmm... If that's not 'pilots', I don't know what is. K :)

Heh. Well, I've gone on and on about the parallels between Kara/Lee and Bill/Saul. I especially love the parallels between Kara and Saul because it would drive both of them nuts if they knew.

I've also joked about Evangelion's Shinji/Asuka being similar since they're pilots with daddy/mommy issues. ;)

Natasha Romanoff/Clint Barton. The angst, the partnership, the banter, the damage... It's all there.

I also see them a little in Tara Chace and Tom Wallace in Greg Rucka's Queen & Country, though a lot of that is how strongly I see parallels between Tara and Kara. (Seriously, I would be stunned if someone in the BSG writers room wasn't reading Q&C)

Q&C is amazing. I recommend it to everyone. Dark and painful sometimes, but just brilliant.

Rucka's a huge Sackoff fan too. He's said on twitter that he'd love to see her play Tara. I love his other heroines but haven't read Q&C--I should rectify that.

Actually, he's said on Twitter that she wouldn't be right for the part. And I get that, since it should really go to a British actor, since the character is British.

Wait really? Cause he just tweeted a couple weeks ago that he could see her playing Bridgett...who's Irish! Weird.

Oh just checked and I suggested Bridgett but first said she should play one of his heroines and he said he'd be down with that. He wasn't specific. :)

In Legend of Korra I almost thought they were doing it on purpose. Korra is the ultimate kick ass female. She meets brothers Bolin and Mako. Their parents died years ago and older Mako has taken care of younger Bolin, leaving Mako uptight, kinda angry, and in the habit of denying what he wants/feels while Bolin is super easy going, fun loving, and open with his feelings. When Korra and Mako team up to fight bad guys they're so awesome. The kicker is when Korra rejects the idea of a romantic relationship with one of the brothers and he drowns his sorrows in lots and lots of...Noodles!

Of course I’ve already mentioned this, but Rob and Cassie from Tana French’s novels :) I have to admit that they don’t remind me much of Kara and Lee individually –Well, maybe Rob reminds me of Kara a bit. And all of them are definitely damaged people--, but there’s something about their dynamic… The UST between Cassie and Rob is very subtle/ambiguous (to the point that one could argue that it’s non-existent, thought it’s there), but I see a lot of pilots in their partnership/friendship and banter and their instinctive, effortless connection. Also, I find the way their relationship evolves, romantically, quite reminiscent of Kara and Lee –and they both have horrible, heartbreaking endings :( Oh, and another similarity: there’s also a Sam-the-safety-blanket messing with my OTP. Pfffffffff.

And let's face it, it's the ending too. How they finally connect for one night and then it all goes so bad so quickly.
Sigh.
