Lee couldn't understand the feeling that stopped him as he was halfway up the mountain. It was rocky, steep slope, with nothing growing, and really all he had planned to to was climb up it and look around before he died. But as he was climbing near sunset he saw a sudden light and had an amazing sense of well-being that he couldn't understand, and he felt like he didn't want to die after all. So he went back down the mountain and went back to the settlement.

Weeks later he asked Paulla about it. It's not like Lee was religious, but it seemed like she might have a sense of these things. She didn't say too much. "You're just blessed," she said.

On the way back from Paulla's tent Lee felt a pinecone drop into his hand, just like a pyramid ball. The wind in the trees sounded like a kind of laughter. Blessed. He supposed he was.
