Good day to you all, welcome to Tuesday. Yesterday I asked people to recommend any NEW pilots fic that they really enjoyed or thought that not enough people read. If you have ideas, go pop them in the discussion at yesterday's post

Today I am curious to know about your personal relationship with pilots. Tell me the ONE quality of either Kara or Lee that makes you relate to them, and why. Is it a quality that you see in yourself? Or one that you wish you did? Is it a quality that is so completely different from your own personality that it intrigues you, mystifies you? Is it something that reminds you of someone that you love?

Enquiring minds want to know...

Honestly there are soooo many reasons I got sucked into the black hole of pilots, but I think the main one was just how freaking expressive Katee's face is. The rest sold it from there, but that's what clinched it. I die over expressive faces and hers is like just beyond what's even fair for range of emotion. And it looks so effortless.

And no, it's not cuz I can relate at all. My expressions end up looking more like Liz Lemon's, not Katee's. I'm jelly! So very jelly!

Katee's face is exquisite, we know this to be true.

But I'm asking more psychologically, what facet of the characters is it that makes you more invested in them than in any other in the show? And is it the same thing now as when you were first watching?

OK then I'll go with Kara's dualistic nature and how she is simultaneously so many different things at once. Things that should be mutually exclusive but just aren't. Cold and hot. Soft and hard. Silly and sad. I guess I really relate to that element of her.

With Lee, I adore his innate desire to be good and do right coupled with his struggles and failings to ever achieve that ideal. Especially living such an uncertain and morally gray existence after the cylon attacks. I guess I just love how hard he tries.

for Kara, its her tough exterior protecting a softer inside. That for all her confident/I don't give a frak exterior she has her own insecurities when it comes time to let down her guard and admit out loud what is in her heart and head...Love.... I can relate to that

For Lee, its that his pride gets in his way, and he knows it. but still for some reason he will "cut off his nose to spite his face"

I'm a lurker, this is my first time posting. Love my BSG K/L-shipper fan fic...it takes away the anger and frustration left by that pathetic ending the show gave us.

I find it interesting that your favourite part of Lee's character is a flaw, not just his pride, but that he lets his pride get the better of him. Does that relate to something in you or is it simply a thing you enjoy in characters?

Thanks for the welcome :) I had no idea how much BSG fanfic people were/are doing. I'm on a quest to find as many of them as possible :)

Regarding Lee my answer is both. I do the same thing myself...though I try not to. I do love his idealism though it infuriates me at times :) And that you know the passion is there, below the surface yet he fights to be in utter control of it....most of the time.

Thanks for the rec...so many links I have found googling are for folks who are long since inactive :( but I have found some fantastic writers for sure doing BSG fic.

Wish I could write like that...I have some ideas and might think about it :) Started rewatching not long ago so i'm not short on isnpiration

There are lots of things I like about Lee, but one big one is: I like that he is able to love an extraordinary, more-talented-than he-is, sometimes agressive and always conflicted person like Kara without getting mown under by her personality. I like that he is his own person and he holds to his own ideas and beliefs and personality and is not threatened by the ways in which Kara is stronger than he is. I like that he is the most himself when he's face to face with such a powerful other person. I think it's a talent that served him well as a commander and politician as well. He is genuinely able to hear other people's points of view and respect their strengths and still be confident in acting as a leader and making decisions with an eye to workable compromise.

That's such a lovely description of the way him as well, Lee Adama, diplomat. Thank you for sharing. Is this a quality you aspire to yourself or something you admire in other people? Or is it perhaps something truly fictional? Do people like Lee honestly exist in this way? Or is it human nature to let our egos destroy our attempts at honourability?

It is a quality I aspire to and that I admire in others, definitely. No one achieves it all the time - everyone has to deal with both egocentrism and insecurity - but I think lots of people really do let other people's charisma and talent bring out the best in them rather than the worst. Generosity of mind and openness toward others combined with unfussed self-confidence is beautiful.

I love this description so much. It's completely true and sums up why I love he and Kara together - he doesn't lose himself to her strength and dominance. He stays true (sometimes too true maybe) to the person he believes he is. I think that takes tremendous character and strength to achieve. Thank you for the insights! <3

For Kara, I admire her bravery. I am generally not a brave person and I love her fearlessness about so many things, although I have to admit that it makes me nervous to even watch it! LOL. She is amazingly strong. I adore her so much and wish I had even a smidge of that bravery myself.

As for Lee, I identify with him primarily for his flaws: he's insecure, stubborn, judgmental, jealous, and misunderstood. He's a loner who loves deeply and has a tremendous loyalty that he never means to undercut with his giant acts of disobedience. I get Lee on a level that kind of freaks me out because on the surface, we are not very much alike at all: he's outspoken politically, takes lots of physical risks, acts bravely, and loves to work out physically. But it's the things he keeps hidden, the passivity and insecurity and weariness in the world that I can identify with, too.

Nice to know i'm not the only lurker "delurking" ! (although I jumped into the pool a few days ago :D)

I actually totally agree with sci_fi_shipper on Lee. It's because he is kind of a loner who feels deeply and finds himself thrown into incredible situations although I suspect he would prefer to be left alone and read philosophy/law books that I can totally identify with him. I love that he keeps a lot of things hidden, and struggle to overcome them - and also that despite all of his (numerous) flaws, he still manage to do what he must.

For Kara, it's more complicated - she's got so many problems from her past that it's difficult to find something to be close to. I guess I really love the fact that she is at the same time extremely strong and fragile.

Lee's struggle with his demons in pursuit of being the person he expects himself to be is one of the things I love most about watching him.
