Good morning, all.

We know a lot about Kara and Lee's family and friends, but are there important people in their lives that we never learn about in canon? Are there any important roles in their lives that you need an Original Character to fill?

What makes for a great OC in a Kara/Lee fic?

Can you recommend any fics that have OCs that you like?

I was just having a conversation the other day with [livejournal.com profile] taragel where we were discussing the idea that Zak, Gianne, Socrata, and Dreilide are pretty much usable as original characters because we know so little about them. The only original characters I would be likely to use are a child of Kara/Lee, and then probably in a bit part.

OCs I've enjoyed are [livejournal.com profile] rayruz's Dr, Stoffa (from No Haven From This Heart) and I grew attached to [livejournal.com profile] kag523's numerous OCs from the KAGverse of fics (too numerous to list).

I have only extensively written Zak and Gianne and each of them felt open in their own way. We know more about Zak, so his character was a little less OC than the others, but Gianne is very open. All we know about her is the content from BM and a physical picture. She was actually really interesting to make up a backstory for in I Carry Your Heart. The temptation is to make her shrewish, but that didn't feel right. So I made her real and very hurt by Lee's sham marriage to her (sound familiar?). Hee.

Anyway, while this seems like a bit of a digression, I guess I'm saying that there are so many BSG characters, it is rare that I need a genuine OC to fill in missing roles. :)

That's an interesting point! I've seen Helo get used that way, too - written all sorts of different ways as Kara's long-time friend. I can't think of a time I've written OCs in a Kara/Lee story, but I'll add a third vote for KAG523's OCs being awesome :)

That's a very good point. We are given so many quality characters that I personally have never felt the need to reach outside of canon for someone new. I've always had dozens of canon characters just waiting in the wings for me to snatch them up and insert them where I need them. But that is also because I am, admittedly, rather lazy with the creation of new characters. :)

Joining the chorus for [livejournal.com profile] kag523's OCs! She makes them seem integral to the story, and they fill out that universe in a way that makes canon seem lacking.

I would like to see Lee with a friend besides Kara. Their friendship is so fraught and land-mined that he doesn't quite get the kind of support I think he really often needs from it.

Plus then maybe he could have unburdened himself about his and Kara's issues to someone else instead of festering by himself so much. Also, as a nice shippy aside, we'd have gotten to see him talking about her more, which is always wonderful. *sigh*

And just to buck the trend, I shall say nothing of Kag's stellar and satisfying OC's. I think she's had enough love today. Another compliment shall not pass these lips/fingers. ;P

OK fine, yes she's amazing! I can't deny it. She is the OC queen. All hail!

I'm the odd duck who really doesn't care for OCs in fanfic. When I read fanfic, it's because I want to read about Kara/Lee and my focus (as in most things) is pretty narrow. I get impatient and start skimming if there are long sections devoted to other characters FROM THE SHOW, never mind random OCs that I don't have any affection for or familiarity with.

This is true for me for both writing and reading. I tried to write an OC (Kara & Lee's kid) a few weeks back as an experiment for an Applecart challenge but it was very unsatisfying. I would've written her differently and emphasized different information if I was truly telling HER story, rather than something for a K/L comm I found.

I often feel that way as well. It takes a well written OC for me to enjoy it. Mostly, I just wanna flail in all the K/L-ness. But I think it can be done and done well, when the OC is used sparingly and purposefully. Mostly, it just depends on my mood that day.

Even well written ones just make me so impatient. LOL. I JUST WANT PILOTS, MORE AND MORE PILOTS. It's bad enough I had to sit through Baltar and his harem and all those cylons with the show! FANFIC NEEDS TO JUST GIVE US PIIIIIIIILOTS. Lol. ;)

Heh, I watched S4 in real time on Friday nights so sadly, no fast forwarding for me! I could tolerate Baltar/Head Six in s1 a lot better because there was more humor then.

Oh see, and Razor I thought was REALLY PILOTY. More than I expected at that juncture and I was sooo thrilled at the return to the s2 tone for them because S3 had just been doom and gloom and sacrifes and spouses. BLEGH.

That's exactly how I feel about Razor. Also the yummy tension between Kara and Kendra and everyone looks extra pretty.

Yes. I did Netflix on my computer and through the whole series I was switching tabs to check email or play solitaire while Baltar was on screen. Often even when Helo, Sharon, Roslin, Adama, and Lee were. I wanted the all Kara all the time show.

See, I was afraid to fast forward because other characters might've *said* something about her and I'd have missed it. So I had to sit through it but I didn't haven't actually watch it. ;-)

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a show just about her? I'd watch that like ALL the time. Though maybe not. A bunch of the Kara centric eps are so tough to watch because they just put her through the wringer. Some days I don't have the emotional energy for that.

I want a S1/S2 Starbuck show. That would be the best. :) (And it's why I'm really excited for Longmire too--Vic has all the hallmarks of early Starbuck with none of the trauma. I just wish SHE were the lead. Hee.)

Walt is SOOOO gonna be the Baltar of that show. The guy who has women throwing themselves at him and no one is sure why.

Ha ha! Oh gosh. I do have to say that I think they did cast well for Walt. Robert Taylor is definitely ruggedly handsome in that same way as Harrison Ford? I get a Ford vibe off him, at any rate.

Me too but I watched 4.0 and 4.5 in real time, so no fast forwarding option.

I did get very disgruntled at episodes on the first three seasons with no Kara, but I didn't skip them because my husband watched with me and he liked the other characters.

I could even put up with the harem, but the God-blathering/fronting like a prophet was what finished me.

I FASTFORWARD YOU, MOFO.

I have read a few stories where I've enjoyed meeting members of the wider fleet, all those ordinary people that Kara and Lee protect but never seem to interact with on the show. Their perspective can be really well done, a great way to get a deeper sense of the post-apocalyptic impact of the story, and wonderful eyes through which to view the main characters from a fresh perspective.

Two good examples are:

Calliope (http://rheanna27.livejournal.com/36823.html) by Rheanna.

Persephone Walks (http://brynnmck.livejournal.com/42429.html) by brynnmck.

Also, workerbee's OC's, especially those in Cavepilots (http://workerbee73.livejournal.com/131904.html/). Sooo good! Especially Maala and Nasr. They kept me so intrigued even though they were entirely new additions.

Usually, though, I latch on to the idea repurposing canon characters. If I wanted Kara to have a brother, it'd be Helo (even though I wasn't a fan of him at all in canon, I've latched onto the fanon in which he's always kind of Kara's bro-y bestie).

I am (obviously if you've read any of my longer chapter stories) a huge huge fan of repurposing the canon characters as new kinds of family/relatives. And Helo as a big brother is my very favorite. <3

I'm going to go with the general chorus and say you could fit so many of the second and third tier characters into a story that there's no need for OC's.

Pre-mini is a whole other can of worms that I have not really explored (besides KAG's awesomeness).

I've never denied that I despise canon - LOL! So I'm HUGELY happy that I escape your 'no need for OC's' clause. *HUGS*

Pre-mini almost screams for OC's. On Galatcia Lee only knew his Dad, Kara (I think Helo's wave was just him being friendly) and Tigh.

Now he could have shared postings with some of the other military members at some point but didn't really know/remember them. Just like the Chief said he served aboard Pegasus and no one made a big deal out of it when the ships meet up.

He also said Atlania, which I think was Lee's posting at the time of the mini.

I remember one really fantastic fic that wasn't piloty, but involved contemporary Earth humans finding remains of our Colonials on an archaeological dig and thinking they (as in they themselves) must be crazy because nothing added up.

I'm not a big fan of OCs in fic in general, but I'm certainly up for it as long as it's well-executed. I quite liked Dr Stoffa and baby Seph - ok, she doesn't do anything besides be cute and general babylike things, but still- in [livejournal.com profile] rayruz's No Haven For This Heart, and the family on the ship in Calliope (and I haven't fully read any of kag523's longfic, but if it is anything at all like the shortfic, I will love it).

And as people have pointed out, canon gives us characters whom we see so little of that they're effectively OCs - random Galactica/Pegasus pilots, the mysterious Major from somewhere, Zak, Gianne and of course, all of pilots' parents that aren't PapAdama.
