DPP: One time can change everything

Good morning! I'm Deborah, and this is my first time leading the DPP. It's great to be here.

To start:

Imagine you could add one, but only one, sex scene (or one kiss, if you prefer) to any episode.

Which episode would you pick?
What would it be like?
How would it change how things turned out for them?
Anything else you want to tell us about it?

My gut reaction is that they'd at least kiss on Colonial Day. I would have said have sex on that day, but I think it would have cooled the story line. I think Kara had some belief that Lee wasn't romantically interested in her and he did little to prove her wrong. In my fantasy, I want them to have frakked at Colonial Day and to have realized their love, even if they didn't get together as a couple, bc this RDM, after all.

Another reason I chose this is that I think it's important that Lee and Kara have a significant romantic connection before she meets Sam. Sam seemed fill a need for Kara (dead guys) that Lee couldn't compete with on a lot of levels, including his own personal issues. If pilots had kissed on Colonial Day (or more only to be interrupted or something), I think that even if Kara had gone for the arrow and had slept with Sam, she might have reserved some of that I MUST RESCUE YOU vibe and not have gotten so attached. I am envisioning that she wouldn't have slept with Baltar in this equation...maybe because she might not have felt rejected by Lee's mystery disappearance? IDK. Lee's never not going to be jealous of anyone she sleeps with, so if she sleeps with Baltar, I think the same course would happen. So the key is, I guess in this longwinded answer, is that she needs to feel enough for Lee that she doesn't have a one nighter with Baltar. And IDK what it would have changed later, although I am guessing a lot. :)

I like the thought of them getting together in season 1 and then just being an established couple for the rest of the show - with ups and downs and fights and drama, but without the endless will they or won't they. That could've made for a quite interesting twist.

The first time I watched S1 I firmly believed it would be possible to make Lee and Kara a real couple and still believe it would have made for a very interesting story even if almost nothing else about their stories had changed. I mean, I wouldn’t have her marry Sam obviously and she and Lee would have had a shared storyline in S4 but other than that...

My thoughts were around Colonial Day too because I have that same belief that Kara isn't sure that Lee really "like likes" her. What if she did sleep with Baltar same as always and ran away after saying the wrong name. Then Lee found her and made a move and they either did have sex or were about to and were interrupted but either way Kara knows he's actually interested. She's about to tell him what happened with Baltar but they're interrupted or they get caught up or maybe Lee says "No more talking" or whatever.

Then Lee finds out that she slept with Baltar and he's jealous just the same but Kara now fully understands his jealousy coming from someone who wants a relationship with her instead of from a boss or a friend or the brother of a dead fiance or whatever.

She still goes to Caprica and maybe even still sleeps with Sam and promises to rescue him. She is thinking the Baltar thing made going forward with Lee not possible. Meanwhile Lee has decided that he didn't have much right to get mad about Baltar because he hadn't made his intentions clear and she might've died out there and he loves her. But now there's the Sam thing.

While I'd love for them to get together and be together for most of the show SO SO SO many tv writers really can't pull that off so just having intentions made clear earlier would have been nice, imo. (One of my current tv shows has been totally ruined by getting the couple together so I might be influenced by that)

A lot of people seem to believe they didn't hook up on Colonial Day because Lee backed out somehow and because of that Kara was not sure how he felt for her and that's why she ended up with Baltar.

I think I've said this before, but I think it's important to remember that the backstory they created for the characters changed somewhat over the years and Kara's character grew to be much more damaged by her past than we might have imagined back in season 1. Maybe it's because I saw the whole series as a whole instead of over a couple of years and didn't have much time to reflect about much anything between episodes,but that image of Kara as deeply scarred by her mother really stucks with me when I look at her actions, even in early episodes like this. So, I've always thought it was more likely that she had pushed him away for fear that they would get closer than that he had run away from her, giving Baltar a chance. Because of that, as much as I would have loved to see them get their shit together early on and go through the series as an established couple, I don't think it would have been possible. Even if they had kissed or slept together then, I guess she would still have run/pushed him away the next day.

I don't know if it would have changed anything at all, but I once wrote a fic that continued the hug scene from Res Ship 1, where Kara not only asked Lee to back her up with Cain, but after they hugged she kissed him and challenged him that this was a suicide mission and if they were going to die tomorrow, basically they should frak each other first.

I think maybe if that had transpired (and it had been good and sexy and loving and sweet, and no one had run off in the morning and married anyone else) then perhaps Lee wouldn't have had as much guilt/depression upon ejecting from the blackbird. Not that that was exactly Kara-related but I think she was part of it and that might have given him something hopeful to balance out his feelings of despondency?

AND if somehow they decided to embark on a real relationship at that point, Kara's sudden re-obsession with Anders probably wouldn't have been, oh you know, making her SUICIDAL in Scar, and Lee and Dee wouldn't have started anything at all.

Basically all of season 4? Clearly they had lots of issues to work out in the earlier seasons, but once Kara came back from the dead, they could easily have gone a whole lot further than a kiss. I think if they'd had sex when Kara got back and Lee had really stuck to her side, he could have talked her down from attacking the President and they could have gone in search of Earth on their own. It would probably have interfered with his political aspirations, but since he gives them up in the end anyway, I'm not too attached to those :)

Barring that, it would have been lovely if they'd at least had a moment after the memorial wall scene in Stranded in a Stream of Stars - the connection was so there, and it would have taken some of the pain out of the poof later (maybe).

Humm, aside from the episodes already mentioned, TBFAYW - because they'd finally been open with their spouses that they did have feelings for each other and for the first time Kara came to Lee. (Even as I can see why he said no, having been so hurt before, and possibly still holding hope out for his marriage.) But, I think if they'd have gone ahead here, it might have worked for they'd been together, parted, raged and hurt, fought it out, realised they still had feelings, cheated, came clean... so, with all this behind them, I guess maybe this one.

And I mean that quite sincerely. One of the hardest parts of acceptance that scene is not just the reality that Kara is dead and gone (*tears*), but that we never really get a moment with the two of them being very tender and affectionate and completely in love with each other. They're just...done? And it hurts. At that moment, sex would've been wonderfully consummating and affirming for them, as lovers, and us, as viewers.

I know I'm weird, because, from a story perspective, I'm fairly content with what happened in canon. My main interest is developing beyond that and seeing how they can move past their problems.

When I'm not writing post-canon, though, I like to see them come to an understanding in S3. I've written something set around TBAFAYW.

Just one? Gods that's tough - my vote would probably go to Colonial Day, either pre-Baltar (which means Kara would get the idea that Lee is attracted to her but doesn't 'like,/i> like' her out of her head and hopefully avoid that mess) or post-Baltar when they're angry and jealous and it would be CRAZY HOT but so angsty/not just in her head.

There are a lot of times when I think they could/should have kissed or more. I wish they had. But first one that comes to mind is when Kara returned from dead. When Lee ran to her, I really expected him to just grab her and kiss her right there in front of everyone, similar to what he did when she returned from Caprica, only more intense because they had been through so much more and there was not doubt she had died this time around. I think this could have changed things because he would be putting his feelings out there for everyone to see - Kara and Anders, but also Adama and Dee and the whole crew. After an admissal like that no way could he just let her go while he went to play politician. The private brig confession would have been even more meaningful, then, I guess. I could live with the Quad of Doom if there was a resolution at some point.
