DPP Thursday! Do They Meet Again?

There have been many great fics that deal with the idea of rebirth, reincarnation, and the like. Our pilots return to the stream and then to life again, destined to cross paths once more. Maybe they only meet if/when the cycle repeats itself, or perhaps they're more fortunate and not doomed to live their trials over and over again. This brings us to the day's topic...

How do you see Kara and Lee meeting again in the future?

Is it fifty years after the conclusion of the show? Or a hundred and fifty thousand? Somewhere in between? Are they both very much the same people they were, or has life treated them a little fairer this go around? Are the same obstacles and people in their way? Will Lee always meet Kara after his brother does, or does he finally get his honest-to-Gods perfect chance? Are they pilots, or something else? Are they drawn to each other, memories of the past pulling them together for some unknown reason? Can they ever 'get it right'?

Take the plunge and share what little scenario you've always had in your head about these two stumbling across one another again.

To anyone who is familiar with the premise of Dollhouse, here is my all-time favourite pilots-meet-again fic, and it is a crossover by rayruz:

Did I Fall Asleep, Part 1 (http://tulipfic.livejournal.com/56564.html) and Part 2 (http://tulipfic.livejournal.com/56564.html).

You don't have to be familiar with Dollhouse to enjoy this, but I think you'll be head over heels in love with it if you've seen at least an episode or two. (one word: Topher!) It's epic and intense and lovely with a side of funny too (Ray's Topher made me spit water across my screen because I was silly enough to be drinking water while I read it for the first time).

And in any case, this is like THE perfect post-canon fic - it's canon-compliant and keeps pilots very much themselves, but is still a fresh start for them.

You should read some of deborah_judge's fic, she shares many of your philosophies. Interestingly enough, this statement: "I'm one of those folks who believes that dead is dead." is the exact reason I CAN'T take solace in the concept of Kara as eternal being. The premise is so ludicrously Old Testament - Sacrifice yourself to PROVE yourself worthy - that I simply have to accept Kara Thrace as gone. Whatever she is - gollum, angel, deity - is (in my eyes) simply not Kara. Apodixis wrote a fic (sorry the name escapes me) that rather captures my feeling of that. It's sad, but I just don't see her as Kara. I see her as literally returned to the universe. But then, my upbringing in a half-Buddhist household would certainly account for those feelings.

In any case, I'm glad that you are able to find comfort with Kara's ending in that way. I'd strongly recommend reading Deborah's fic. You'll find many of those concepts you just mentioned explored there in her beautiful prose. :)

Sadly, no, they do not ever come back together. :(

I enjoy all of the fics previously mentioned (and Pierian Spring is in my top five fics ever), but my personal philosophy and belief system is dead = dead. :( I suspend it for fic and even for the show bc she does come back as some other being, but I never really believe it. (As if I believe all the other things, which I guess I kind of do, or at least the human relationships on the show which seem very genuine.)

You know, I think that you and I actually have very similar concepts of death... but I would end mine with a smiley emoticon. Hold on, I'm going to grab you a quote that I LOVE. D has promised he'll read it aloud at my funeral. It 'clicks' more on my philosophy on life than pretty much anything else I've read and it gives me comfort on a daily basis. I don't fear death. Never really have... and I think it's partly because this idea just feels 'right' to me.

Sure (http://deborah-judge.livejournal.com/222899.html). To me season 4 Kara is Kara, and if she can disappear and come back once there's no reason at all that she can't do it again. To me the interesting question about what happens next is: how does atheist!Lee handle a relationship with a supernatural being? He's always struggled with Kara not being exactly what he wants or needs her to be, now he's going to have to struggle with that at another level. I think that's why she says she isn't coming back, or why she might be afraid to come back, that she doesn't think Lee can handle what she is. But I think he'll deal, and I think there are interesting possibilities for fic there.

I'm kind of an odd-man out here in the BSG fandom... I think perhaps it has to do with my upbringing in a bit of a hippy household. My mother was staunchly Catholic hence my bitter dislike for the 'Kara as sacrifice' plotline which felt dreadfully old testament. My father, on the other hand, was a Buddhist and that balanced out the angst with Karma... a MUCH healthier approach if you ask me. As for me, I don't define myself as either of those; Agnostic is probably as close a definition as I have. I believe in science. I believe in math. I also am willing (until disproven) believe in multiple universes and string theory and connections and echoes between time... and THAT tends to skew how I write!

One of the things I rather liked in BSG was the idea of cycles, though I tend to think of them as 'parallel universes' rather than repeating in the same, narrow, stream of time. Given this, the vast majority of my writing is slightly different variations to the same storyline and characters. I think workerbee73described it as "KAGverses". And that's as good a description as I've ever heard. :)

Tighs that Bind (http://kag523.livejournal.com/159473.html) on the other hand is TOTALLY crack!fic. Kara and Caprica Tigh are sisters. Kara's with Lee; Caprica is with Sam. This may, indeed, be the LEAST angsty thing I have ever written.

Mysteries of the Flesh (http://kag523.livejournal.com/173850.html) and its coda Carnalia (http://kag523.livejournal.com/235937.html) puts Kara in a polyamorous relationship with all her favourite men in a present-day university setting. Not as cracky as it sounds. This one has LOADS of angst.

Aren't AUs different from reincarnation fics? I've written Lee and Kara in different settings that have noting to do with the poof or reincarnation. Some of the fics you mention are AUs right? Or did you intend them to be some sort of reincarntion theme?

It's funny because I was just talking about this over the weekend with Tara. I have a super specific vision in my head for a reincarnation scenario because I've thought about it so much when thinking about the mythos of the show. I adore the concept of pilots meeting through time over and over again. I see it as a rebelling against the negative destiny concept the show gave us. I want to change it so it can mean LIFETIMES of pilots sometimes going wrong (poofs, pigeons, and quads of doom) and for it to also mean copious amounts of times when it goes so so right (friendship, love, family, trust, adventure, births and deaths TOGETHER). I believe in soulmates and somehow it comforts me to think that no matter what time and space these two always found each other. Sometimes they remembered who they were. Sometimes they didn't and were just two people who met and fell in love never knowing about the past life baggage they had. They just need to be together to be complete.

I can clearly see them stumbling upon each other in the most random ways and it makes me happy. Same for the rest of the people on the Galactica. Everyone alive at the end of the worlds was there specifically because they were meant to be and they were meant to be part of each others lives forever. At the end of the day if you had to do it all over again wouldn't you want the people who survived an apocalypse with you by your side again? Each meeting in whatever time would feel like coming home. It's kind of heart wrenching and beautiful all at the same time to me.

And even though I normally detest reincarnation fic, I like the idea of K/L in different times/alternate worlds/meeting again for precisely the reason you say - the show is what left the door wide open by saying fate is what screwed them over.

And if "all this has happened before, and all this will happen again", what's to say that they won't find each other again, and eke some more happiness out of that lifetime than the one they got in the show?
