DPP Thursday! Do They Meet Again?
Feb. 16th, 2012 09:08 amThere have been many great fics that deal with the idea of rebirth, reincarnation, and the like. Our pilots return to the stream and then to life again, destined to cross paths once more. Maybe they only meet if/when the cycle repeats itself, or perhaps they're more fortunate and not doomed to live their trials over and over again. This brings us to the day's topic...

How do you see Kara and Lee meeting again in the future?
Is it fifty years after the conclusion of the show? Or a hundred and fifty thousand? Somewhere in between? Are they both very much the same people they were, or has life treated them a little fairer this go around? Are the same obstacles and people in their way? Will Lee always meet Kara after his brother does, or does he finally get his honest-to-Gods perfect chance? Are they pilots, or something else? Are they drawn to each other, memories of the past pulling them together for some unknown reason? Can they ever 'get it right'?
Take the plunge and share what little scenario you've always had in your head about these two stumbling across one another again.
As always, feel free to recommend some fic you've written or read that you think fits the topic.

You don't have to be familiar with Dollhouse to enjoy this, but I think you'll be head over heels in love with it if you've seen at least an episode or two. (one word: Topher!) It's epic and intense and lovely with a side of funny too (Ray's Topher made me spit water across my screen because I was silly enough to be drinking water while I read it for the first time).
And in any case, this is like THE perfect post-canon fic - it's canon-compliant and keeps pilots very much themselves, but is still a fresh start for them.

Date: 2012-02-16 03:35 pm (UTC)I enjoy all of the fics previously mentioned (and Pierian Spring is in my top five fics ever), but my personal philosophy and belief system is dead = dead. :( I suspend it for fic and even for the show bc she does come back as some other being, but I never really believe it. (As if I believe all the other things, which I guess I kind of do, or at least the human relationships on the show which seem very genuine.)

Date: 2012-02-16 04:55 pm (UTC)You know, I think that you and I actually have very similar concepts of death... but I would end mine with a smiley emoticon. Hold on, I'm going to grab you a quote that I LOVE. D has promised he'll read it aloud at my funeral. It 'clicks' more on my philosophy on life than pretty much anything else I've read and it gives me comfort on a daily basis. I don't fear death. Never really have... and I think it's partly because this idea just feels 'right' to me.

Aaron Freeman “You Want A Physicist To Speak at your Funeral”
You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want the physicist to talk to your grieving family about the conservation of energy, so they will understand that your energy has not died. You want the physicist to remind your sobbing mother about the first law of thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. You want your mother to know that all your energy, every vibration, every Btu of heat, every wave of every particle that was her beloved child remains with her in this world. You want the physicist to tell your weeping father that amid energies of the cosmos, you gave as good as you got.
And at one point you’d hope that the physicist would step down from the pulpit and walk to your brokenhearted spouse there in the pew and tell him that all the photons that ever bounced off your face, all the particles whose paths were interrupted by your smile, by the touch of your hair, hundreds of trillions of particles, have raced off like children, their ways forever changed by you. And as your widow rocks in the arms of a loving family, may the physicist let her know that all the photons that bounced from you were gathered in the particle detectors that are her eyes, that those photons created within her constellations of electromagnetically charged neurons whose energy will go on forever.
And the physicist will remind the congregation of how much of all our energy is given off as heat. There may be a few fanning themselves with their programs as he says it. And he will tell them that the warmth that flowed through you in life is still here, still part of all that we are, even as we who mourn continue the heat of our own lives.
And you’ll want the physicist to explain to those who loved you that they need not have faith; indeed, they should not have faith. Let them know that they can measure, that scientists have measured precisely the conservation of energy and found it accurate, verifiable and consistent across space and time. You can hope your family will examine the evidence and satisfy themselves that the science is sound and that they’ll be comforted to know your energy’s still around. According to the law of the conservation of energy, not a bit of you is gone; you’re just less orderly. Amen.

Date: 2012-02-16 04:28 pm (UTC)One of the things I rather liked in BSG was the idea of cycles, though I tend to think of them as 'parallel universes' rather than repeating in the same, narrow, stream of time. Given this, the vast majority of my writing is slightly different variations to the same storyline and characters. I think
Here are some of my favourites:
Pierian Spring (http://kag523.livejournal.com/147100.html) : A post-finale reincarnation fic and the next-cycle coda Children of the Sun and Sky (http://kag523.livejournal.com/231271.html) . It picks up right where the finale ends.
The Next Time Round (http://kag523.livejournal.com/158200.html) which is a remix of
Offerings (http://kag523.livejournal.com/209170.html) is a smutty threesome fic. Lee's a lawyer. Kara's a rockstar. Leoben *cough* is the sound guy from the band. *raises eyebrows* Yes... yes I did.
Tighs that Bind (http://kag523.livejournal.com/159473.html) on the other hand is TOTALLY crack!fic. Kara and Caprica Tigh are sisters. Kara's with Lee; Caprica is with Sam. This may, indeed, be the LEAST angsty thing I have ever written.
Mysteries of the Flesh (http://kag523.livejournal.com/173850.html) and its coda Carnalia (http://kag523.livejournal.com/235937.html) puts Kara in a polyamorous relationship with all her favourite men in a present-day university setting. Not as cracky as it sounds. This one has LOADS of angst.
And most recently, I wrote two short fics:
Pro Bono (http://kag523.livejournal.com/242894.html) has Kara as an animator and Lee as a lawyer.
Blindfold (http://kag523.livejournal.com/243731.html) has Kara as a grad student, Lee as her prof.
Great topic today! :)

POOF? WHAT POOF?
Seriously. I've given up on canon. I have my own universes I play in.
People have already mentioned my two reincarnation fics... I have a third, that's a Flashforward character but it's mostly PWP with Kara and a FF character, that mentions that Lee and Kara are supposed to find each other again.

Date: 2012-02-16 04:35 pm (UTC)OH OH OH! SIGNAL FIRE (http://mintenergy.livejournal.com/8220.html) by mintenergy is also BRILLIANT. OH MY GOD. It starts off as an interesting premise and ends with HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT... I can't say much without spoiling, but the basic premise is when Kara poofs away, she ends up back in the maelstrom and is able to save herself creating a completely different timeline.

I don't know whether to call it a "pilots meet again" fic, when it's more like...pilots meet, if you know what I mean.

Date: 2012-02-16 05:12 pm (UTC)I can clearly see them stumbling upon each other in the most random ways and it makes me happy. Same for the rest of the people on the Galactica. Everyone alive at the end of the worlds was there specifically because they were meant to be and they were meant to be part of each others lives forever. At the end of the day if you had to do it all over again wouldn't you want the people who survived an apocalypse with you by your side again? Each meeting in whatever time would feel like coming home. It's kind of heart wrenching and beautiful all at the same time to me.

Date: 2012-02-16 05:17 pm (UTC)And even though I normally detest reincarnation fic, I like the idea of K/L in different times/alternate worlds/meeting again for precisely the reason you say - the show is what left the door wide open by saying fate is what screwed them over.
And if "all this has happened before, and all this will happen again", what's to say that they won't find each other again, and eke some more happiness out of that lifetime than the one they got in the show?
