Good day everyone. I will be (for the very first time) hosting the pilots dpp week. Sorry for the later start today, I just got back to town and I had only started catching up on things. I planned some discussions, games, writing challenges etc. so hopefully we will all have lots of fun. 

Today's discussion/challenge topic is: Pilots from other people's POV. 

Wee know that Dee and Sam were aware of the feelings that the pilots had for each other and there were hints that Baltar, Laura and Sharon guessed a bit as well. What about other people in the fleet? Lee and Kara spend a great deal of time together (at least in early seasons) and they didn't always keep their confrontations private. Rumors across Galactica spread fast so I bet that quie a few folk where trying to figure out what was the deal between those two. 



If you are game, your task today is to pick a person from the list bellow and let us know what he or she thinks about Lee and Kara and their relationship. Does he/she know/suspect anything? Is he/she interested in their relationship or finding out more?. Did he/she secretly root for them or against them? Did he or she had a thing for/crush on one of the pilots? Does he/she spread gossips about them?...

Get into "your person's" head and let your imagination go wild (the longer and wilder the better). Describe his/her feelings in your own words or write a drabble or link us to a fic. Anything that doesn't contradict the canon in a major way is fine.

It is the nature of things for children to destroy their parents. Leoben recognizes this in Lee. It's something they have in common. Lee also has his gods, though he calls them by different names: democracy, freedom, rule of law. He longs to serve them faithfully. He understands, this is not all that we are.

Leoben understands that Kara loves Lee. He's seen it, and he's glad of it. She'll need him on the way to fulfil her destiny. Leoben can take Kara into the underworld, but she'll need Lee to meet her on her return.

If you ask him how he reconciles Kara's love for Lee with his absolute certainly and conviction of her love for him, he'd just look at you funny. What does one thing have to do with the other? Humans.

He sees the love that binds all things together, and yes even this love that traps Kara and Lee in endless repeating circles. This too is God's will. This too is destiny, though they might prefer to call it by other names.

I really like the way you put Leoben's thoughts into words. His head is not a place I ever wanted to be in so I could never figure out whether he knew anything about Lee. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Oooh Leoben as Hades. Oh that is sooo cool. It makes Kara Persephone! I love this soo much. Not least cause I am trying to write Kara/Leoben at the moment!

The first day Boomer got to Galactica, Kara was assigned to look after her. She asked right away about the picture in Kara's locker. Kara slammed the door shut. She didn't get much information about the men in the picture--Helo explained about Zak, under his breath while Kara wasn't around, but even he didn't know much about Lee. When Boomer actually asked straight out, Kara folded the picture in half and told her to mind her own business.

The first time she flew with them together, during the 33-minute apart cylon attacks, Boomer understood. Two people who flew together with that kind of grace had to have something between them.

This is such a nice insight into the Sharon-Kara relationship. Good thinking about the picture. Most pilots must have seen the photograph in Kara's locker and probably wondered what it all meant.

Saul Tigh

For colonel Tigh's perspective, I am going to recommend Eagle-Eye View (http://rachelindeed.livejournal.com/5692.html) by rachelindeed The fic is an absolute masterpiece and it looks at the Kara/Lee relationship from a non-traditional point of view. Rachel's interpretation of Saul's inner dialogue is spot on. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it.

Bill Adama is completely clueless, and somehow remains that way, even after this:



Seriously, how could anyone seeing that doubt how Lee felt?

Because of that evidence it's now my personal head canon that Bill is wilfully ignorant of any feelings that Lee and Kara have for one another. I can't imagine it's easy to keep secrets on a Battlestar, and moreover, Lee in UB is incredibly expressive (though IMO there are obvious signs before), so wilful ignorance is the only way I can explain in my head why Bill apparently has no idea.

As for why I think Bill Adama chooses to be wilfully ignorant of Lee and Kara's feelings for one another, I think it all comes down to a couple of squicks he has. First, he views (and largely treats) Kara as a surrogate child, and Lee is his actual child. I think maybe to him, seeing Lee and Kara in a relationship might trip in his head as akin to incest, even if they don't see each other and their relationship that way. So he chooses to ignore any signs that it might be the case. That's before we even bring in any issues that he may have around the fact that Kara was once engaged to his other son.

I think that's why he seems to root for Lee/Dee and Kara/Sam - because he chooses to ignore any signs that any other pairing is even possible.

I agree that Bill willfully ignored any hint that their might be something romantic between Lee and Kara. I think Zak probably had a lot to do with it, seeing Kara as being Zak's and as his 'other' child when Zak is gone. Taking care of Kara being one of the ways Bill deals with his guilt in Zak's death.

I also think that Bill wasn't very savvy when it came to Lee's personally life. Not entirely Bill's fault but I don't think Bill understood Lee for much of his life.

I think this is the crux of the thing right here. For a huge portion of their lives I don't think Lee "got" his father, or that his father "got" Lee, particularly. I wonder if Bill's wilful ignorance over Lee and Kara is partly traceable to that - he doesn't understand his son and doesn't particularly want to get involved in his love life (even to the point of having an idea of what's going on).

To be honest, even if Bill knew, had been confronted openly with the idea or the reality that Lee and Kara had feelings for each other, I don't think that Bill would understand why Lee had feelings for Kara and quite possibly vice versa. I don't think that Bill would have seen what they really had in common other than flying and maybe not even that. Where as he would have easily seen the appropriateness of Kara with Sam and Lee with Dee because they're both more obvious couples.

I think that's exactly it - he never really "got" Lee that way. He'd never seen him and Kara together before Zak's death, and Kara's decision to move to Galactica obviously put a rift between her and Lee, so I really think he never even entertained the possibility that Lee and Kara were something other than very good friends and practically family to each other. P

Part of it might also have had to do with the fact that whenever Lee and Kara were around him, they essentially acted like his kids - and default siblings to each other - than anything else. That's something they do in Daybreak, too - at the end, in their very last scene with Bill, they're standing together as his children, and don't quite move out of the kind of sibling-y mode until the Raptor takes off (and then Kara has to tell Lee she's going :()

But between UB and TSAR, when Lee is grieving and Bill just doesn't seem to notice just why her death has devastated Lee so much, I'd have to say he just doesn't notice, and doesn't want to notice.

That is true. I do think they often revert into sibling mode in his presence or even soldier mode just on the basis that he is the Commander so he might not see it as blatantly as we do. Guh! I love how multifaceted they are!

I think it's more in UBex than in UB, but Adama always seems incredibly stoned to me in that scene :) I've always assumed he was just too baked to process Lee's emotions.

There's the part right before Lee shows up where Adama's trying to talk to Tyrol and Cally and forgets what he's saying and he and Laura giggle about it...yeah, I'd put my money on a morning dose of New Caprican Weed :)
