lizziec: (BSG - Apollo & Starbuck (Final cut))
[personal profile] lizziec posting in [community profile] no_takebacks
Yesterday's DPP brought some interesting surprising twists and traits into the light. It was interesting to see that lots of people seemed to pick similar moments. Do feel free to potter back along there and leave a comment if you think of anything else, or want to belatedly take part in the discussion.

Today is Confessional Friday. This is the space for you to feel free to share your piloty/bsg secrets and confessions in the manner of Post Secret or [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets.

Some ground rules:

  1. You can post as yourself, or if you're a bit worried/embarrassed about what people will think you can post anonymously

  2. You can post an image that you've created, or you can just put it in the form of a normal comment if you can't/don't feel like creating an image

  3. If you're going to create an image, please re-size it so it has a width no larger than 350 pixels

  4. Your secret can be about fic, the portrayal of a character, the actor/actress, storylines/arcs, general fan conventions or your own interpretation of a character - anything really so long as it relates in some way to bsg/pilots

  5. Feel free to comment on other people's secrets and confessions but please be sensitive to how they may be feeling (I know you probably will be, cos this community is awesome, but I wanted it to be clear to start with)

Here's a couple of mine to show you what I mean:

(Ok, I know this one isn't strictly BSG, but it was writing for this fandom that caused me to realise it.)

Screencaps can be found here and Photobucket is a decent-ish free upload service.

I wonder what Kara just confessed to Lee...

I actually love the Daybreak flashbacks, and the near-frak on the table and don't consider it character assassination at all.

I mean, there are enough fics about pilots cheating on Zak, I can't get why we're so mad because it's in canon.

I can believe they'd cheat on Zak, but definitely not in the way shown - wholly unromantic and based on a dare. I can believe they'd cheat because they couldn't stop. A portrayal issue for me, I guess. :)

I always believed that they cheated on Zak. I even imagined worse to be honest.

I know many people have trouble they did it the first time they met. Have to remember it's television and they are trying to fit a bigger story in a smaller spot.

The flashbacks show the initial spark, they show them becoming quick friends, and show some drunken indiscretion. Shows quilt about their feelings cause of Zak. All of this has been shown in many fics. Now in fic all the above would be shown over time. For Daybreak it got compacted in one night. I think this is what irritates people. It all happened one night and nearly frakked on a table with Zak right there.

In my mind I can see they were taking what alot of believe about them and compacted it. If this all happened over a period of time, and if the indiscretion didn't happen with Zak near by. It would have been more widely accepted.

Also beyond a shadow of a doubt, the way it turned out with the pigeon and the poof puts it all into another light. I believed if they got a good ending, a much happier ending it would be looked at differently.

I always wanted to see how they met and they gave it to me, one of the few things I liked about the finale. I look at the whole flashback as a compact treatment of their relationship. Their obvious attraction and spark, an instant connection when they first saw each other. Their desire to be together even when Zak was alive but guilt about it cause of their love for him. This was while he was alive which was only increased ten fold after his death.

I don't like that they were ready to cheat after knowing each other for a few hours. It makes it seem like they don't care about Zak AT ALL if they can betray him so insanely quickly with no internal struggle at all, and that cheapens both of their characters for me. The idea that they just "forgot" about Lee's brother and Kara's lover who they just spent the evening with and who is within ten feet of them is so unrealistic I can't take it seriously.

*HUGS* You might want to go over to Lee Adama daily from yesterday and read Rachelindeed's comments about Dee's actions. It certainly puts her decision to marry Lee in a different, very sympathetic, light. K :>)

I agree with this. I tend to feel more sympathy and understanding for Dee also. She kind of got the bait-and-switch Lee. Kara, on the other hand, was Kara throughout the marriage. Interesting!

Hmmm. I'm pretty sympathetic to them both as individuals. I like them both, even, though I find Dee less likeable and more pitiable in the post-Sacrifice era. But I think I'm more impatient with the Lee/Dee relationship than I am with the Kara/Sam one.

I don't know about sympathy exactly, and I like Sam more as a character, but I definitely felt that she handled everything with Lee in a much better way than Sam did with Kara.
And the really sad thing about her is that you can't bash her for marrying a guy who she might have known was in love with someone else, because she didn't seem to have anyone else. I've never gotten as much of an impression that Sam would have been alone without Kara.

well, it's not a secret but it sort of is a confession because it was the source of a lot of LOLs from my colleagues last winter.

i made my boss by me the BSG box-set as a Christmas gift. i paid for it but the whole process of going on-line, searching for it, shipping, etc - that was all her.

oh, ya - and i'm one of the crazy persons that actually likes Lee's full name.

I don't hate Daybreak

Date: 2011-08-19 06:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] winegums.livejournal.com
Here's mine, for which I should probably be shot: I don't hate their final goodbye. I actually thought it was absolutely fitting that Kara's last scene was with Lee, and for what it's worth, it's beautiful and poignant. All the credit for that obviously goes to Katee and Jamie, obviously, because at the end all I wanted was for pilots to want to be together. And from what I saw, they did.

Yes, Kara deserved better than the poof and yes, I will never understand the pigeon, but at the end of the series I felt a bit the way I imagine Lee felt, alone in that field - sad, but accepting on some level.

That's a lovely description. And to be honest, I've FINALLY gotten to that point too. (Actually, I think I'm pretty much there for most of canon.)

That's fair; I agree it's relatively minor, though I would like it better without precisely this close-up on the pigeon -- that shot is what pushes it over the edge into silly for me :)

It always makes me think of the movie Remains of the Day, actually. "Trapped bird" metaphors abound in the failed love stories of repressed men and the women who left them, apparently :) I should add that I adore Remains of the Day.

I love making jokes about Pigeongate, purely because - well its a bit like shooting a very large fish in a tiny barrel - it's a guaranteed giggle that I can get hyperbloic over because it was super inane.

That table frak or the near table frak, I find it hot. It's the fact that Zak is near by and I love running permutations of what if he woke up. I personally think the pair of them have a table fetish (I need to write that FIC!)

I can not view Sam and Dee as their real partners - sure they are wedded to them, but it feels like those ceremonies were Hollow BS (tm) therefore when they are having the Affair (tm) it doesn't feel like cheating. They were together before Dee and Sam IMHO and the marriages are the affairs!

When I am writing I seem to run out of steam - this has happened 3 times now. The first time with Naz's story - it will be finished. Now with a fic I haven't posted and one for one other fandom - both frakked cause my creative flow was interrupted by the riots! GAH!

My big confession.

No matter how dark (and I have read some pretty grim K/L stuff) it is my hearts and flowers and pretty little unicorns with rainbows ship. Why? Because when I really want some dark and grim and just fucked up mess. I like to think that Kiss between Kara and LEOBEN was actually MEANT (You wanna live in my head for five, ask questions on that one!

I don't hate the hair Lee had in the UB flashbacks. I guess between the fact that it's mostly night and all the other stuff that happens in the episode, I hardly even noticed it until the fandom started complaining.
