DPP: Intervention Time!

Hello everyone, it's my turn at the DPP this week, and to (belatedly) kick off, here goes:

Pilots frequently frustrate us with just how terrible their timing is, and how frequently they end up frakking it all up between them just when there's the smallest hope things will be ok. And nine times out of ten, it ends up feeling like it could have been avoided if someone just gave either or both of them a good talking-to.

Today's question is: what if that person was YOU? What if you could break the fourth wall or otherwise enter the BSGverse and actually talk to Lee Adama, or Kara Thrace, or both together, to tell them to please stop being so chicken/running off with other people/generally doing their best to frak it all up, or that despite all appearances, you two really do love each other - with a catch: you can do this only ONCE.

So, which point would you choose to stage an intervention for pilots and save them from themselves/cosmic bad luck? Here are a few possibilities, accompanied by my own wise advice to them:



me: Pssst, you two! Lee, take your jaw off the floor and just kiss her already! And Kara, don't go off with that slime Baltar, the person you want WANTS YOU RIGHT BACK and jealousy isn't a good look on him.

P.S.: I'm also working under the assumption that pilots would actually listen and not just freak out about the fact that a fangirl/fanboy is sitting in on their lives and giving them relationship advice. Or shoot/clobber said fanboy/fangirl.

*sob* I SO WISH. I actually chose my last pick because I thought that things were getting worse for Kara AFTER the affair ended, and if they'd been together she might not have flown into the maelstrom/gone crazy. But the ultimate result we both want is the same (i.e. Kara doesn't die).

Her death made no sense and wasn't necessary to tell the story! I still remain angry at Lee for being so blind to her struggle. When your TOP pilot says she's not going out there again, you say OKAY! WTF??? So infuriating!

I honestly can't be mad at him, Kara's the kind of person who normally NEEDS people to have faith in her and trust her - and she wasn't blind to the fact that Lee was giving her exactly that. It was his way of saying "I don't think you're crazy, just going through a hard time" - and it came within a whisker of working, they were about to head home when Kara went haring off after the imaginary Cylon Heavy Raider.

This, this, so much this. Why didn't he listen to her? Kara's instincts about flying are usually spot on and he should have taken her seriously when she said she didn't trust herself. That is a huge admission from her, given she lives to fly. This was the point in the episode that I started to find Maelstrom really hard to take.

I see his reaction akin to his oblivion on New Caprica. He didn't see what was right in front of him. He has his own theories about things and didn't see that she was losing her shit. I will hate this scene forever. Sorry! :(

(I think Kara never expects people to trust her at all and wanted Lee to ground her, even though, she's happy of course, when he doesn't. I think she enjoyed his faith in her, as misguided as it was.)

I think my early intervention in their relationship would've been minimal and mostly just as that little voice in their ears as an advocate because apparently EVERYONE else had no love/awareness for Kara/Lee. Well maybe the Chief but he never said anything to either of them until the bar episode and his advice was decidedly NOT Kara/Lee friendly. And Baltar only knew on accident. And Athena randomly knew in UB out of nowhere, *cough* Helo *cough* but didn't really pick a team. And Helo and Tigh...well obviously they gave crap advice! Our pair never got anyone on their side. So mostly I'd just put in good words where I could and hope that they'd straighten out on their own.

But after Scar, I'd lose ability to remain all Switzerlandy. That's when things get all wonky. I'm ok with it all going down that way cuz it helped bring some things into the open and work the issues, but that he never went after her was stupid. So I'd sit our gorgeous Leland down and have this little chat (if I could keep my own hands off him long enough)

Me: Lee, put a shirt on because I can't concentrate. OK. Now, why are you letting her run away again? Please grow a pair, go after her and put yourself out there. Passivity doesn't work with her. She needs a man who will step up and call her on this s**t! Yes, she's being a bitch, but you love that about her so get over it. She's always a bitch when she's scared and guess what, SHE'S SCARED! Now go talk, yes I said TALK to her. I realize it's a foreign concept to you both, but give it a try. If you knew 50% of what she's been through, you'd know why this is so hard for her. And yes, I can see that you're scared too, but who do you really want to spend your time with? Kara. Or the most boring female in the world, Dee? Seriously. I know it's safer and that you're generally drawn to that controlled environment, but that is exactly why Kara thrills you like nobody else. Now get your sexy ass OUT OF THAT CHAIR and get her to see how much your really care and that the worlds are not going to end if you two frak.

I agree that his decision there was not great. I remember being so mad at him. And her, JUST PULL UP KARA!!!!!!!!!! For Lee, who was usually so tuned in to her, to miss how badly she was struggling was very OOC for me. Although, her actions of just flying into death's waiting arms, also ridic and OOC. *sigh* Now i'm sad. :(

ya, and the part about the quick frak probably didn't helped either. i give him some points for realizing that going on that route was bad to begin with (stopping was frustrating for everybody but the right move omho) but i sort of take them back because he should have tried harder to make her talk.

OUCH!!!! Though knowing pilots, they'd feel so awful and guilty they'd stay well away from each other even after Kara and Zak are no longer together.

And here's the funny part: Chief loved Cally (I really believe he did, if by the end he said it wouldn't have made a difference if he knew Cally was "trouble") but later in the series, we get to know that he was lying too - he hasn't been able to let go of Boomer, his first love, and he admits as much to Boomer when they see each other again.

And re: Scar. I would so be behind that conversation. Preferably cheering Lee on as he left the room to go after Kara. "There's nothing here", pffft. LIES, ALL LIES.

Ehhhhh, it's a crap writing decision and OOC from everyone involved. But I still love the scene under the wing, even if it makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry forever.

I agree. I shipped them straight from their second reunion in the miniseries, but wouldn't actively have suggested an intervention till maybe Colonial Day AFTER seeing the ensuing disaster.

But Scar is the tipping point, because before they've joked about it and ignored it and been in denial like no one's business, but after that near-frak THEY CAN'T IGNORE IT ANY LONGER. I mean, Lee did the right thing by stopping, but it was Kara's flipout that really set the seal on it. And Lee is kind of a prince among men for not lashing out at her even when she brings up her dead-guy hangup (and the idea that she's using him as a substitute), but yeah.... I do wish they'd talked. Though he did try.
