[identity profile] howlinchickhowl.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] no_takebacks
Well hey there folks! It would seem that I am in charge of driving the good ole DPP bus this week, I warn you I don't have a licence and this is my first time behind the wheel, so you might wanna buckle up, but rest assured, if there is a bomb on board, I am all over that.

So last week we had a thinky thoughts kind of week thanks to [livejournal.com profile] trappermcintyre with lots of good historical musings and psychoanalysis and whatnot. I thought this week we'd do something a bit lighter, partly because I am not cool enough to come up with thinky thoughts DPP ideas, and partly just because, well, I think everyone's a bit tired and in need of some Piloty respite.

So, without further ado, except for the part where I said without further ado, let's get on with the show.

Today's post is all about one of my favourite things about fandom. Unsupported Fic Tropes. You all know them, we all use them, they exist in every fandom the world over. I personally love them, there's something fun about realising that every person who ever writes fic for a certain fandom employs these ideas and interactions without ever having seen them on the television.

Don't know what I mean? Did you ever hear Kara call Lee Flyboy? Did you ever see Helo give Pilots a friendly shove towards each other? Did you ever really see our two beloveds compete in a viper? I mean, they flew and fought and taunted and stuff, but I never heard any of that "I can outfly you any day" kind of trash talk that is the delightful staple of so many Academy!Pilots fics.

So that's today, Unsupported Fandom Tropes day. What are your favourites? What are your least favourites? What are your thoughts on them in general? I'd love to hear.

And, as is obviously always the case when it comes to DPP, if you feel the need to express your love for UFT's through the application of spontaneous fiction, well loved reccomendations, picatures or gif-times or any other kind of thing that makes you happy, well that's what the comments are for. :)

Here's to hoping we have a fun week, if y'all think I'm lame, well, that's what the comments are for too ;)

...I wanted a picture to put up so my post wouldn't be super dull, and I just really like this one :)

Kara flew Lee's wing in 33, but CAPs were always rotated so I doubt they'd have been flying together every single time they went out. They seem to do a bit of teaming-up in other ships though, with her first outing for the Blackbird. And there's also that amazing Viper-Raider formation flying in YCGHA, though that wasn't really by CAP design.

Also, she does disobey an order from him in the miniseries, when his bird lost power and she refused to let him go down even when they were the last two left out there (which resulted in the amazing Viper-ramming scene). That and her early S3 antics with breaking formation, landing her bird on bingo fuel and nearly getting herself killed - but it's clearly implied that that's not Starbuck's usual form. So I'd say the basis is slim but it at least exists, unlike say Helo playing Cupid etc.

33 is one of those epis where he specifically orders Sharon and Kara to stay with him for the Olympic Carrier pass though. They have cute bantery deleted scene dialogue. "This patrol is 100% stimulated" or something like that.

OK so never disobeys is overdoing it, but I don't think Kara makes a habit of disobeying him though as is often prevalent in fic. To save his own life is kind of another story. I'm thinking of all the fics where Lee is all weary/angry that she never listens to him/does what he asks/etc. etc. or whatever. I think Kara listens to him/obeys him THE MOST in canon, actually.

yeah, there was that cute bit of banter between Apollo, Starbuck and Boomer where they joke that Boomer's a Cylon because she's holding up so well (little do they know...)

You're right that Kara actually doesn't normally disobey direct orders from Lee unless she has a compelling reason to do so. I think fanon probably gets it from the fact that she cheeks him a lot when in pilot mode and disobeys other people (like Garner), but they always have each other's backs when they're flying together.

I think the difference between canon and fanon here is that, in canon, if she disagrees with his orders, she'll tell him, and then obey him anyway.

Exactly. Kara is 2iC to the CAG after all, and both in that capacity and with her later responsibilties we do see her carrying out Lee's orders, even the unpleasant ones (the Olympic Carrier, then the Razor strike on the basestar where she would have stayed back and died if it wasn't for Kendra ordering her out). Sometimes fanon underestimates that, which is strange because the fact that they work together so well and don't casually undermine each other is the foundation of the whole buddycops thing.

I think some of that comes down to Kara in Canon having very clear personal and professional boundaries when it comes to people she respects. Occasionally they're a bit blurred (see her argument with Lee in '33') but I think it's fairly rarely that she lets whatever issues she has in her private life with someone she generally respects interfere with accepting their orders in her professional one. I think Kara in Fanon tends to have that line permanently blurred and react much more as she might in a private situation in her professional life.

If you see what I mean.

fanon has a lot of stuff where he's mad at her for being a loose canon or whatever

I wonder how much of that comes from that discussion they have at the end of Captain's Hand where he explicitly says that he was pissed with her because she was on the Pegasus doing what she normally does (being a bit of a loose cannon) and getting away with it and whenever he tries doing the same he always seems to end up losing nearly everything. And then Fanon takes that discussion and runs with it to the nth degree to the point where Kara's behaviour towards Lee is no longer quite within her established character.

"This patrol is 100% stimulated" or something like that. great scene mainly because it links so well with the scene in the hangar "Do I have to smack you in the mouth Lt?"
