DPP: Canon Reverso

If you missed it, yesterday's post introduced us to some brilliant supernatural takes on canon. There were Vampires on the Pegasus, unicorns on Caprica, more vampires on Earth and Bill Adama, Admiral Werewolf!

Today I thought we'd take a look at something slightly more grounded in canon.  Namely, what might've happen had Lee and Kara switched places in some of our major storylines. 

--Lee is serving on Galactica when Kara comes for decommissioning and gets stranded there
--Kara becomes Roslin's military liasion

--Lee sleeps with Racetrack after Colonial Day. Kara finds out and punches him.

--Lee goes to Caprica for the arrow, meets resistance led by Samantha Anders, has a fling with her, and gets kidnapped by cylons etc. 

--Kara mutinies against Tigh.

--Kara welcomes Lee home with a hug and a kiss and tells him she loves him. He teases her about it.

--Kara sees a prostitute/investigates the Black Market

--Lee misses Samantha/starts frakking up, drunkenly tries to seduce Kara then walks away 

--Lee shoots Kara with friendly fire during a hostage situation while she is on a date with....uh...???

--Kara becomes commander on Pegasus

--Lee leads rescue mission back to Caprica and drunkenly gets his flirty groove on while Kara watches

--Lee decides to muster out and Kara makes her move. They sleep together and Lee runs/goes back to Sami, marries, musters out.

--Lee is imprisoned by a cylon on New Caprica and forced to take care of a kid

--Kara marries ??? then gets fat and whiny on the Pegasus. Doesn't want to go back to New Cap....till she does.

--They start an affair, but Kara won't cheat and Lee refuses to divorce Sami. When he changes his mind, Kara's so scared/guilty that she tells him no and tries to make her marriage better. 

--Lee has a destiny. He flies into the maelstrom.

--Kara leaves the military to.... do what? protect Baltar?

--Lee comes back and Kara has to talk Bill into trusting him. 

--Lee goes on the Demetrius mission and eventually the cylon basestar.

--Kara becomes...president?

--Kara brokers a truce with the cylons

--Lee finds his dead body on Earth.
--During the mutiny, Kara's about to be shot and Lee saves her life. Then he kisses her.

--Sami is shot in the neck during the mutiny. 

--Lee imagines his mother in a bar on Galactica? And remembers a childhood song...

--In the climactic battle, Lee brings them to Earth, he lovingly says goodbye to Sami then just poofs away from Kara, who is off to climb mountains.

 

God, does any of that work? At all?  The one I'm most curious about is "Lee has a destiny." Leaving everything else aside, if Lee had a destiny, what do you think it would be? Same as Kara's?

It's kind of funny to think about all these. Kara has such a strong personality that it's hard to imagine her taking on a lot of Lee's arc because it doesn't seem to fit her specifically--I just can't see her wanting to be a lawyer or serve on the quorum or become president.

And of course, with the reversal, things become a bit less interesting from a gender politics standpoint anyway. Male characters *are* usually the ones who get destinies...and cold feet...and save the day a lot.

Heh - the swapping is great fun - that was my entire premise for Rage, rage against the dying of the light... except that it was Kat rather than Racetrack... ;)

But yes, some of those are rather appealing to think about!

That makes me swoon. On the face of it, it's your stereotypical guy-saves-girl scenario. With our pilots, it's Alpha!Lee steppin' up! And who doesn't love an Alpha!Lee.


And I do think Lee had a destiny - so much of Kara's journey was tied up in him, especially with him supporting her in the last leg of it. And he had to save Baltar in the trial, because that slippery little cockroach had a role to play in the opera-house scenario, and he helped to broker peace with the cylons. Really, RDM is a total fatalist - they all had destinies and roles to play in finding Earth. They just hit us over the head with Kara's, because her's was more overtly religious in nature.

Even when I saw this scene in the show, I remember thinking how screwed up it would seem if we saw a man do it to a woman. I mean, she got him drunk, rushed him into sex, pushed him away for needing any emotion and then slapped him. And no one protested! An interesting moment in their bending of gender roles.

agreed. when I was thinking about Lee doing some of the things that Kara does to him in the show I realize how much I'd hate him if he ever acted like she acts all the time. But I love her for it. *scratches head* I don't get it.

I guess that that kind of behavior just doesn't jibe with his character and his character is what I love about Lee. I honestly don't see any way they could exchange places in the series. They are too individually crafted to be one way or another. Plus, honestly the jerk-off guy being a douche-nozzle to the girl he actually loves has been done to death. Over it! . . . or maybe I'm over identifying again. :)

I could totally get behind some version of this idea though. :)

Yeah. In some ways this prompt is less about "what if Lee did x" than "what if Lee were female and Kara male." But in some ways that would make them more typical characters on TV :)

A lot of times if you switch them it becomes about them acting more stereotypically and conforming to gender roles, especially when it's Lee doing something Kara did, but the opposite, when Kara does something that Lee did, like becoming president, it seems really (or more?) implausible, because that's where you really start thinking about character and personality too.

But I agree that Lee wouldn't be Lee and Kara wouldn't be Kara if you had them switch roles a lot of the time.

A couple of your suggestions are more logistical though, and the first one is intriguing: what if it had been Kara who just came for the ceremony. It's funny but I'm so used to thinking of Lee as a distant CAG that I wonder what it would have been like to see him surrounded by his friends, instead of Kara.

I like the idea of Kara as Roslin's military advisor. I think she would be a great person for that, actually, giving Laura the inside scoop on all the behind-the-scenes politicking of the various officers and strategy decisions. I think she'd be a mine of information, without ever being disloyal to Bill or the fleet.

Plus, it'd be fun if she gave Roslin totally accurate information about everything except Lee. For him, she'd make up completely BS titles, like Lead Officer for Standard and Emergency Rotations (LOSER), and watch while Roslin used the titles and Lee was too polite to ever correct her :)

Lee goes to Caprica

I've often wondered what would change if Lee went to Caprica instead of Kara, but I can't place him stealing the raider and abandoning the fleet, along with endangering a mission to save the crew stranded on Kobol. Kara seemed to take it really personally that Adama lied about Earth, but I don't think Lee would due to their estranged relationship. So, I'd like to find a way for him to complete the mission to blow up the basestar, and then use the raider to jump back to Caprica. My uncreative mind would just say, oh they decide to the drop off of a nuke, but with a raider instead of a raptor. Only then could I see them switching roles there.
