I don't think any discussion of shippery episodes would be complete without that marvel of marvels, that wonder of wonders...no, not the one you're thinking of, the other one...that's right, I'm talking about HOME.  Pilots have their first (onscreen) kiss.  We got our comm name.  Buddy!cop pilots became a thing.  Lee declared his love for her.  You know.  NBD.  (that is my new favorite expression)

When I considered what clips and quotes to use for this episode, I mostly wanted to use all of them, but I restrained myself.  Somewhat.  A little.  Anyway, this one was inevitable:

Kara: What was that middle part again?
Lee: Hmm?  What do you mean?
Kara: Did you say you love me?
Lee: Well, um…
Kara: Lee Adama loves me.
Lee: No, all I meant was…
Kara: No, seriously, very sweet.  You love me.
Lee: *laughs*
Kara: No, you love me.  You can't take it back.  There's no takebacks.*
Lee: You're dreaming it, Kara.
Kara: You love me.
Lee: You're dreaming it.
Kara: You love me.
Lee: Dreamer.
Kara:  Mmmhm.  Okay.

*ed. note: you mean there ARE no takebacks

So there's this.

Even after 4 years and who knows how many viewings, this scene still manages to amaze me.  I see this gif all the time, and it's fun, but the music and the way everything sort of stills in that moment right after he kisses her...I feel like I'm holding my breath, like there's just this moment when everything ceases.  And then Kara--because she's Kara--lets the breath (and the moment) go by cracking a joke and we continue unaltered.

Well, sort of.

This clip was also inevitable because mere words cannot capture the joy that is Lee bouncing a ball off Kara's forehead, or Kara's almost imperceptible brightening as she listens to Lee from the other side of the fence.

In the second part of the episode, we get the Papadama reunion and more hiking/camping scenes (campfire scenes make everything better).  Also plot and firefights and the Tomb of Athena, which has pilots smiling beatifically at each other.

We also get this, which might be my favorite deleted scene (except for that one, and that one, and that one...okay, it's one of my favorites):

No more clips, I swear.  You might be better off just watching the episode though.  Anyway, I have to use this gif too, made by latteaddict.  For those who haven't encountered it before, it's an unused version of the reunion kiss that aired as a promo.  It's, well...different:

Photobucket

Okay.  I don't have any thinky thoughts today, sorry, but I will spam you with some more links to fun things.

I. Fic:
+ The Strange Dividends of Parapraxis by [livejournal.com profile] daphnaea
+ Though You Can Render No Reason (3/3) by da_angel729
+ I am positive that there is a wealth of CAMPING fic, but my brain is rather fried right now and I cannot think of any.  Hit me with your best Kobol recs, people!
+ ETA because I meant to post this handy-dandy list of recs from thrace_adama and then I forgot: Home I & II Fic Recs.  I told you my brain is fried.  I am also facepalming because there are several fics on that list that I was thinking about yesterday when I was thinking about what I was going to post today.  This is proof that you should always leave a note write things down.

II. A fannish creation of the nonsensical variety: This is a random silly thing I wrote one time, that is kind of hard to describe.  It's kind of a cracked-out narration of Home I & II.  Or something.

III. Vid:
+Okay, I know this isn't just about Home or anything.  But I associate this (wonderful) vid with these two episodes.  Maybe you will too.  And yes, you have to download it but I swear you will not regret it: Set the Fire to the Third Bar by Hazyshade.

IV.  I lied.  Here's one more clip.  I just think it sums things up nicely.

So what are your favorite things about Home (besides the obvious)?
For me, it's similar to Kobol's Last Gleaming--both episodes represent a time when BSG could do masterful things with both plot and characters, instead of all one or the other (*coughseason3andseason4cough*).  While watching Home, the episode sets my shipper heart alight, but I also appreciate it from a more wholistic standpoint as a fine work of art.  I have yet to encounter anyone who doesn't like this episode.  Even if later canon contradicts that Earth bit and if the Cylons were on Caprica and Kobol why didn't they use the Arrow themselves and is that a projection what is going on...

Oh! My memory is rubbish and I've only watched this episode once, so I'll leave the favourite moments to others, but thank you so much for all the clips and the vid. I just spent my entire lunch break watching them. :)

well, except for the obvious, i like that deleted scene that you posted... it;s so funny and them and i like the whole scene with Lee being happy that Kara is back, and the fighting side-by-side down on Kobol. and basically the whole two-parter.

Ok, I've been DPP absent this week, I got distracted by Ice!Pilots and sleeping and other RL stuff, but HOME is just about my favourite episode in the whole show. It's just so full of things that I love, reunions and pilots and parents making up with their children and Adama and Roslin having a friendly conversation, and it was when the show was still in this place where you believed there was hope. There were things these people could achieve if they just all stuck together and weren't idiots, and it lost that after New Caprica and the mutiny and all the other shiz.

And the scene when she first comes onto the Astral Queen? The first time I watched this episode I must have watched that scene about 5 times. It's just so joyous and Piloty! And I love the contrast between how tired and haggard and fed-up she looks when she comes through the door, and the way her entire face just goes WHEEEE! when she sees Lee. I love that they don't even hesitate before hugging each other, I love Katee's FACE and how it does a million different things at once, I love the way they brush it off without actually brushing it off, like, they move past it and make a joke, but they don't move away from each other or pretend it didn't happen, it's just part of them. I LOVE THIS SCENE.

Also, I should not be allowed to check the DPP while I have actually things to do because invariably I end up spending like ten minutes watching gifs of pilots kissing. I just can't look away. And Oi I wish they had actually used this version, SHE KISSED HIM BACK!! sigh. Ok, I'm going to watch it one more time and then try and do something else.

I'm loving the DPP topics this week btw, even if I can't get to comment on all of them. :)

Also, in a non-pilot rant related sense, my favourite scene from Home is inside the tomb of Athena when they're all looking up at the constellations and the colony markers, because it was, I think, the first time I realised how seriously in depth the mythology of the show went (even if later it got shot to hell) there was something really magical about that scene, about learning about the original colonies and Kara's voice all hushed and awe-filled (awful?) when she realises that they're standing on earth. Gorgeous scene. Although I never understood how they got back but I choose to believe it doesn't matter.

Allllso, man, this episode, HELO! and the scene when Lee's all suspiscious of Helo and Kara basically tells him to shut up, because I love Kara and Helo and their friendship and how she told him he was an idiot but trusts him anyway and never even considered the possibility that he was a cylon, and because it's a valid thing to say, from Lee's point of view, but she tells him he's an idiot anyway.

HELOHELOHELOHELOHELOHELOHELO!!!!

I don't know why...

I really have this feeling, too, when I watch those early episodes. After New Caprica, when Kara is depressed right along with Lee, the show never quite feels like itself again.

Also, while we're talking about non-pilot love, I think the other deleted scene, where Billy confesses to Laura that he's an atheist and he just believes in her is just the sweetest thing ever.

Billy! My poor sweet Billy! The Sam Seaborn of the Colonial Fleet. He was gonna be president one day. I can't say how much I love his and Laura's relationship, it was just so real and loving.

Billy :(

Hah! He's so Sam! Though Roslin couldn't be further from Bartlet :) And Sam might be the one person who's worse at dating than Billy...

Hm... That promo kiss is not right (in comparison to the aired one). He's a bit... aggressive, Kara's head seems onboard, but her hands don't know where to be. It's this weird combination of almost attack and participation vs. plausible deniability.

As a got-carried-away moment, I just love the kiss. And then the conversation by the fence moves the personal relationship a little farther. Then the whole thing is dropped. *sigh*

I just love this whole arc so much. I never get tired of watching, reading about it or discussing it. BSG at its best. It pains me to thing of all the ways their lost their way as the show went on. But since I don't want to get down, I'll rewatch your clips again. lol.
