DPP: Lie to Me

A meme mash-up today. Here's a few different ideas, pick your poison. :)

 

1) Tell us how Kara and Lee met. Go into as much (or as little) detail as you like. Use plain description or write it as a fic. There's only one catch... it has to be a LIE. That's right it has to be totally made up by you. No dinner with Zak. No table scene. Maybe they meet in another time/place altogether. Maybe they're very different people. Go wild. Go crazy. 

2) Post one sentence about Kara/Lee. It could be something from a WIP or an abandoned work you've never posted. It could be something you make up on the spot. Maybe someone will finish it for you?

3) Post a literary/movie/etc. quote and tell us how you think it applies to pilots and/or how you would adapt it into a fic. (i.e. "Mess with the bull, and you're gonna get the horns." -- Starbuck gets into a bar fight and Lee "The Horns" Adama surprisingly comes to her rescue by pitching in. ;) 

4) If you're a fanfic writer, tell us the pilots fic idea you have that you think you couldn't write. If you're a reader, what's the pilots story you'd love to read that no one is writing?

#2: A little alpha lee for ya: Holding her gaze, he pushes forward with his hips, grinding against her hard, hard enough that she can feel him through his pants and hers. “Does that feel like I don’t want you?”

#4: I had an idea for a fic set after Rapture, where Kara and Lee are kind of estranged after their discussion in the raptor (even though they DID have sex) and Kara's hands are still bandaged. She's trying to shower but she can't wash her hair and Lee comes upon her (no pun intended, as he does) and they have an angsty/angry discussion even as he's helping her and she ends it by telling him (in not so many words, as she does) that she found out she was pregnant by him and she had an abortion because he broke it off between them. I decided it was way too dark/depressing/hurtful to write. (I have canon for that!)

Awww. Never gonna write #4? I bet it would have been good, but I totally get the angst thing. I've been stuck on wanting to reesolve all the pilot angst RFN and that impedes the writing of the angst required first to eventually get there. Thus we have the stalled WIPs. :(

Hoping to comment on my lunch break in a few hours. Great post with wonderful prompts. Maybe my muse will get off her ass.

"Lee is sick of eating burgers and fries the day they decide to show up the bank in Delphi that is that bank, the one with too many Olympian statues around the fountain at front for it to not have the most well-guarded safe in the whole city."

Great prompts! Hmmm. For #1 I have a bare-bones bantery scene from my never-finished Batman crossover. I'm tempted to post the whole dialogue, but for just one line...how about this one:

You're the opposite of seductive actually. You make people care without trying to. That’s not seduction, it’s...well, whatever it is, it’s in a whole different league.”

#3: "Discussion is for the wise or the helpless. I am neither." (That's a line of Leela's from the old Doctor Who that has always made me think of Kara - she's a doer, not a talker!)

#1 From one of my WIPs that I really like, but hasn't moved beyond opening relationship establishing. I bet you can guess who is saying this to whom. Academy fic (sort of). :D

“These are my simulators, Sir. I am the flight instructor, Sir, and the next time you want to use one of my sims, I suggest you clear it with me first.”

#3: "You can't always be torn in two." Frodo to Sam upon leaving the Shire. I have an icon with this saying above Lee as he's standing in the field after the poof. Part of me wants him to move on and find happiness. The other part wants him to miss her forever and never fill the ache. *sigh*

#2/4 Combo

I always want to rewrite just that final scene with Lee/Kara in the finale (obviously). I mean, even with all my other issues with the end of the series, if just that last segment could have been fractionally different, it wouldn't bother me so much. Kara's dialogue literally sets my teeth on edge. It's so out of character. It doesn't sound like anything she'd say. I've read alot of great fic about how getting to Earth might have gone different for our Heroes, but haven't found that one perfect piece to turn canon in my brain.

Here's a finale ficlet that I also couldn't get quite right that's another example of how it tries to fix things...unsuccessfully. Hopefully someone will write one that just clicks for me or direct me to one that maybe I've missed.

Sob. So true. This is why I can never believe that's a happy ending for Lee despite what canon tried to tell me and his staunchest fans seem to believe is true. Without her... how could he be happy? We never saw him so in canon.

Ummm, I want what I always want: more alpha Lee/alpha Kara with Kara letting Lee be just slightly more alpha than she is...leading to brilliant angst, fight-and-frak hotness, and satisfactory resolution.

I'd also take rewrites that fix problem parts of canon. ;)

4. Recently I've had an idea for a fic I'd like to read. I've mentioned this several times in the past, but never thought of it of suggesting it as a fic before. Back after UB, TAB was originally going to be a comedic episode of how Joe's Bar came to be, and Maelstrom both Lee and Kara were hurling toward the hard deck within imminent death they profess their love for each other, but then at the last moment they are saved.

Well my idea is simply, what if this did happen? I imagine L&K talking over their comms so the whole CIC heard what they said. What does this do? Do Dee and Sam leave them immediately? What does Adama have to say? What do their fellow pilots have to say?

I imagine another difference would be the affair doesn't stop in Rapture, at least not entirely. Perhaps their encounters decrease due to guilt, but do not stop.

The other questions are what does this mean for Kara's destiny, or Lee helping with Baltar's trial?

I often thought what would have happened if TPTB went this route. Would be interesting to see what someone thinks would have happened.

If I could write funny, I'd be all over this. I just don't think I could get through the comic version of TAB. If I could play up the longing looks at the end of TAB and start again at Maelstrom I think I'd do ok because i love this scenario, but it would be more angsty than funny.

Lord, it has been an age since I've been here! How is everyone?

1) Let's see. Obviously, they met at a party, some time before Kara blew her knee and quits pyramid and before Lee finished school. They drank a lot, they made fun of each other, they made out on somebody else's couch, they went home together, Kara had to leave Lee's place in a hurry the next morning to make it to an early pyramid practice, they didn't see each other again until years later. Look at their faces in those pictures! Clearly they have met before! ;)

2) Snippet! This is from Adama Brothers, which, you guys, I swear I am working on in my not-spare-but-stolen time. This conversation may or may not make it out of the editorial gate, but we'll see!

"Did you call your mother?"

"Did you call yours?"

"Okay," Lee sighs, "point well taken. Look, Zak calls every year. They send a card. He doesn't... he doesn't remember all of it. And Sam, well, you've met him. He's just-- he's not as..."

"Whiny?"

"Don't," Lee warns.

"Fine," Kara snaps, standing suddenly, "I won't."

4) You know, I was thinking about this on my run earlier, and I try not to say "never," anymore, because I invariably have to eat that word later when I end up doing exactly that thing that I swore I wouldn't do, and "never" is just not a very tasty word, you guys. It tastes like your least favorite food. I know. I've eaten it a lot.

I will say that I would love to write a cracky crossover high school/college AU, but I probably won't, because I know the HS thing has been done before, and I don't know if the world really needs Fandom High. (Although you know you want to see the badass debate team of Adama/Seaborn take the intergalactic championships, right? Right?!)

#2 - from a WIP (one of the first lines of the WIP I came up with):

It was her of course. It was always her. It had nothing to do with the stresses of his new job. Things wouldn’t be any better if he was flying a Viper, because what was wrong inside his head all came back to her.

#3 - I have a couple.

I keep coming back to the "just as you are" quote from Bridget Jones' Diary, I think because they do accept and love one another for who they are, not who they are sometimes or to the public. They love each other despite the messy bits and lowest times.

I also really love this part from A Knight's Tale (was that *really* 10 years ago? :/)

"Hope guides me, that is what gets me through the day and especially the night. The hope that after you're gone from my sight, it will not be the last time that I look upon you."

I think it applies to them from very early on in S1, but has special resonance after Maelstrom/Crossroads and throughout S4 - especially knowing about the *poof*. Lee knows what it is to be without Kara after her death and his own awareness and acceptance of something like the quoted position is one of the reasons why he doesn't care what she is when she comes back and accepts her unconditionally from the moment that she appears in the Nebula.

#4 - I always really want cracky AUs that are handled respectfully, today that is a Disney's Hercules AU where Kara is Meg and Lee is Hercules.

Also, I was thinking earlier about what if the genderswap roles were reversed and Starbuck stayed male and Apollo was female? What would the dynamic between Bill and Lee (Leigh?) be like if it was a father - daughter relationship? Would it change anything? ...I don't know, it's a daydream I'm toying with.

2) From my angsty WIP plotfic that I swear I will finish (and post) some day:
Kara had a habit of falling—or jumping—and he had a habit of trying to catch her and pull her back up to the level of the sane. He just didn’t know how to do that this time. This time, when she was sitting alone in a cell looking so godsdamned empty. And for once he couldn’t find a way to blame her.

4) Maybe I will write this, maybe I won't, but I really want soccer player AU. Kara is basically Abby Wambach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abby_Wambach). I don't know about Lee. Maybe he's also a soccer player (for US or England, I suppose). Maybe he's a coach or a trainer or something...I don't know, but there can be some fun Olympic action and basically lots of happy stuff, which is why someone else should write it (I don't do the happy).

#1 Lee and Kara go to two different civvie colleges, he on an ROTC scholarship, she on an athletic one for Pyramid. He's doing it because he really does want to fly, but he's sticking it to his father by not going to Colonial Forces Academy. She's doing it to get away from her mother, who wants her to enlist. He's a cheerleader for his school's team and they catch each other's eyes just before the game starts. It just might be instrumental in her getting injured during the division championship game.

#2 The abandoned work had six-yr-old or so Hera stopping Kara and Lee's wedding by telling Lee he was going to marry her before he married Kara. I never had an outline for this but it was to be rather mystical.

#3 Crack!Fic written with Well, you know how men are. They think "No" means "Yes" and "Get lost" means "Take me. I'm yours." ... Meg in the 1997 animated film Hercules as the prompt: No Means Yes (http://leeadamamusings.livejournal.com/11562.html#cutid1)

#4 Hurt!Lee needs way more comforting by Kara, which is why I put some prompts to that effect over at LAD.

He’s two bright blue eyes across a crowded bar. Kara Thrace watches him from where she’s half paying to a triad game and still winning. She throws back another shot and narrows her eyes at him, focusing harder. He reminds her of someone, this blue eyed, dark haired stranger. Not that he looks like anyone she knows. Kara Thrace doesn’t tend to end up knowing anyone with those like of graceful features. His nose isn’t even broken. That makes her laugh. But something about him, makes her think she’s known him, somewhere, sometime.

Maybe his kid sister or brother was in one of her flight classes.

She’s a cackle that cuts through the din of the club. Lee Adama whips his head to catch the arch of her neck and the flaxen blonde of her hair. Sipping his beer, he shakes his head and tries to go back to his date who’s demur even in the midst of this rowdy chaotic fleet bar. She’s the kind of girl that Lee Adama ends up with, just the good side of boring, interested but not always interesting. He finds his eyes roam back to the card games again and again as he tries to figure out why that girl and her too loud laugh make him feel things he though he’d felt before.

Finally he shakes his head. When he looks back his cackling blonde is gone.

So, it took me 2 days to get the courage to come out of lurkerdom, but I wanted to say that it was thanks to taragel that I understood why everyone was calling today "Star Wars Day" and saying things like "May the fourth be with you." Apparently, I needed it said as "May the 4th Be With You". Thanks!

As for #1: I like to think they met in the brig, or sometime beforehand resulting in the brig.
OR, They met in during the Academy days during some drunken adventure, knowing each other only as Starbuck and Apollo. Their full names weren't revealed until they met at dinner with Zak, which is how I explain the handshake at the end.

Ok, this is my first post here, I'm excited. And by the way, this is like, hands-down, the friendliest fandom I have yet to come across, and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone I've talked to so far for being like, majorly welcoming and awesome. Love it. And this comm is made of win.

So I'm going to go with #4 because I just had this idea in a dream and it's kinda cracky and I'm probably never ever going to write it, because I don't know how, but this is it.

Many years ago, when I was still a teenager, there was a show on what was then the WB that only lasted like half a season, and Ian Somerhalder and Kate Bosworth and Katheryn Moennig were all in it before they became famous and it was my favourite thing that summer. It was called Young Americans, and it went like this - A disaffected cross-dressing hacker girl shows up at a prestigious new england boys' boarding school and poses as a boy, proceeds to fall in love with the strange yet sensitive son of the dean, and generally make a whole mess. It was a beautiful show, made with loads of sunshine and wistful music and lingering looks, and there was a wise English teacher/crew coach who let them have lessons outside and taught them things about life and it was basically just awesome.

So there you have it, New Capricans anybody? Yes?

Also because I'm in an AU mood and because pretty much everything makes me think of Some Kind of Wonderful in one way or another, Kara's Watts, Lee is Keith, and Dee is Amanda Jones.

Re: 4): A Decline and Fall remix, from Kara POV? Did anyone ever write one? I saw some comments in wisteria's porn battle from a couple of years ago that she might write one, but if it happened, I can't find it. (And that fic needs to happen, to complete the trilogy.)
