let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Oct. 27th, 2010 01:55 pmI know it's not my week to host the DPP, but I'm bored and I'm having a beer with my lunch, so now this is happening. Our headliner this week is still
christ_chexx_4u, so we'll just say I'm your opening band, okay? Okay.
The weather where I am today is GORGEOUS (well, if you're like me and you think that grey, overcast skies and a nice cool autumn breeze are gorgeous), and if it weren't so warm out, I would think that it looked like the perfect precursor for a sudden snowfall. That got me thinking.
Kara + Lee + snow = ????
Were our Pilots to have a snowball fight, WHO WOULD WIN? Lee? Kara? Would it be a draw because they ended up with the kissing and the what-have-you? What if they knew each other when they were kids and they had a snow day? Would it be possible to make fake snow on Galactica? SO MANY THINGS TO DISCUSS.
This is, in fact, a silly excuse for me and whoever else wants to play to write kidfic, by the way. Or to photoshop funny pictures of Lee and Kara in the snow. Or write comment!fic about that time they got snowed in in that cabin in the woods and only had each other for warmth. IDK, IDK.

Date: 2010-10-27 11:23 pm (UTC)I also tend to have a bit of a sappy view of Lee, in which I think he would let Kara win just because he loves happy Kara (in addition to loving to sex happy!Kara)

Date: 2010-10-27 11:52 pm (UTC)Speaking of snow, I think that Lee and Kara would enjoy skiing. It would active and competitive enough Kara, but kind of posh and elegant for Lee.

My first attempt at kidfic
Date: 2010-10-27 10:17 pm (UTC)Kara doesn't see the point in knocking when she's already pretty much standing in their background, so she scoops up some snow in one gloved hand and packs it as tightly as she can before taking careful aim.
The snowball explodes with a very satisfying thump against Lee's window, leaving a big white splotch behind. Through it, she sees movement. Lee raises the window just as she fires off her second volley, and this one would have smacked him right in the face if he hadn't ducked in anticipation. Kara grins up at him expectantly even as he glowers and slams the window back down. Still, she knows he's coming down. She flops down in the snow to wait.
She’s kicking her boots together to keep her feet warm when Lee slips out the back door. She laughs at the sight of him, looking like a big grey marshmallow in his winter jacket.
He ignores her laughter. “Zak’s still sleeping,” he says before she asks.
She nods, and ignores his proffered hand, pushing awkwardly to her feet on her own. He uses his outstretched hand to rub snow in her hair. Without a word, they gather two plastic sleds from the garage and climb up the hill.
When they head back in several hours later, Kara’s feet are aching and she feels damp and frozen all over, but she’s grinning and laughing as she flops down on Lee’s sofa and demands that he bring her hot chocolate.
He grumbles, but goes obligingly into the kitchen. Kara resists the urge to prop her socked feet up on the coffee table, knowing Carolanne wouldn’t appreciate it.
Zak wanders in sometime later, still in his pajamas. The little idiot tries to steal Lee’s hot chocolate (he at least knows better than to touch Kara’s) and Lee threatens to dump it on him. Kara would join in the bickering, but the warmth is making her sleepy and she almost nods off right there on Lee’s couch.
Of course, she rouses to help Lee carry an indignant, squirming 12-year-old out the back and dump him, pajamas and all, in the snow.
After that, Zak goes sulking off to his room and doesn’t reappear until Lee makes lunch, and the three of them crowd around each other on the carpet. Lee’s mom still isn’t home, so Kara doesn’t worry about wearing out her welcome. When Lee insists that he has to do his homework, Kara follows him up to his room and promptly sprawls out on his bed. Much to his dismay, she starts bouncing a pyramid ball off the ceiling.
“You could help you know,” Lee says. “You’ve got to do this stuff too.”
“Yeah right,” she scoffs, “like I’m going to do your homework for you. Nice try, Adama.”
“Whatever,” he says, turning around to work at his desk.
Kara smiles, triumphant, but lets the pyramid ball slip to the mattress.
The room is shadowed when Kara wakes, Lee’s hand shaking her shoulder.
“My mom’s home,” he says. “It’s getting late.”
She glances out the window, and the only light is from the buildings and the stars reflecting off the snow. He leans back, away from her as she pushes up to sitting.
“I should go.”
“You can stay.”
She punches him on the arm and tells him no such luck, she knows he just wants her to stick around so he can foist some of his math off on her.
“Can’t get anything past you,” he says but he’s not smiling.
It’s okay, she thinks as she walks through his house, gathering her winter gear that’s scattered about. She’ll probably never say yes, but she likes that he keeps asking. When she walks out, through the front door this time, her boots crunch on the packed-in snow. She doesn’t look back so he can’t see her smile.

Date: 2010-10-27 11:53 pm (UTC)EVERYONE WOULD WIN! I mean, really.
1) CUTE!
2) BANTER!
3) WARMING UP AFTER!
4) DID I SAY CUTE!?
5) You have to know this would be full-contact snowball fighting, too. Which obviously makes it a win-win for both Lee and Kara.
So yeah. Everyone.

Date: 2010-10-28 02:52 pm (UTC)A snow-themed fic is brewing on the horizon...
Date: 2010-10-29 04:28 am (UTC)A presistent plot bunny appeared at the mention of snow- I immediately thought of the pilots and the ice harvesting operations after Bastille Day in S1. Here's a bit of what popped into my head (with more to come hopefully):
(Pilots are planetside whilst the fleet harvests H20 on the ice planet- running recon on snowmobiles)
They had been traversing through the range for a couple of hours without seeing any signs of organic life- nothing but craggy slate and snow- when the pressure under her accelerator lever disappeared and she heard a resounding crack from somewhere around the under carriage.
‘What the…?’
She pumped the lever a few times, but it remained loose. The accelerator was useless- she was just coasting over the snow now, carried by sheer momentum alone. Frak, frak, frak.
‘Apollo, Starbuck.’ she flicked on the jury-rigged helmet com. ‘Something’s wrong with my sled. I need to stop and have a look.’
‘Roger that. We’ll pull over in two klicks.’
Kara snorted into her mic. ‘This baby isn’t gonna get that far- I’ve got no accelerator- I’m just skiing.’
Up ahead, Lee started to slow down and fall back with her. ‘How ‘bout your brakes?’
She squeezed the brake lever experimentally but felt no change. ‘Negative, Apollo. Brakes are frakked too.’
‘Roger that, Starbuck. I guess we’ll be stopping when you do. Coast out as far as you can - I’ll stay on your nine.’
‘Wilco, Apollo.’
The terrain was flattening up ahead as the rolling hills levelled out into an open plain. The mountain range extended north-south in the periphery of her vision, but the horizon in front of her was perfectly flat, uninterrupted snow as far as the eye could see. Between the marbled grey atmosphere and the weak light down on the surface, it was next to impossible to make out where terrain ended and sky started. Once they got off the slope and reached the flat, she would be able to stop the snow mobile without breaking her neck.
The gradient of the final slope had her hurtling downhill and she hit the flat at breakneck speed. The snow was disappearing under her skis in a white blur and she had to work hard to keep traction. Off to their right she could see an outcropping in the hill extending out on to the plain. With a quick hand gesture to Lee she began a wide turn that would bring them into the lee-side of the promontory, leaning hard into it, and trying to get as much drag against the skis of the snow mobile as possible. Ice crystals flew up in a spray around her as she drifted through the turn, rapidly sliding towards the sheer face of the promontory.
‘Starbuck! What the frak are you doing?!’
Kara ignored Lee’s outraged voice crackling over the com and focused on not slamming against the rapidly approaching wall of rock. Throwing all her weight into the skid, the edge of the skis finally bit into the snow crust and she came to a jarring halt with no more than a dozen metres to spare....
(Still to come: K&L argue, freeze their asses off, and escape death by the skin of their teeth)
It's been about a million years since I wrote anything more than a couple thousand words long, so anyone who wishes to beta, hand-hold, give me the occassional kick in the rear etc. would be welcome company while I finish this one off! I have half a dozen started BSG stories, but never seem to get around to finishing them. So this time I'm trying a new strategy, and hopefully being more involved in the community and talking about them might turn some of these plot bunnies into chapters!
Cheers,
eridani
