"I never..."
Oct. 22nd, 2010 08:51 am
We spend a lot of time here thinking and talking about what the pilots would do in every conceivable scenario. How about what they wouldn't do? List your suggestions for things that Lee and Kara would never do, together or individually, AU or canon-compliant, past, present or future! Here's a few to get you started (sorry if some of these are a bit on the schmaltzy side!)
- Lee and Kara never use cutesy nicknames or even such standard couple-y forms of address like "babe" or "honey" or "sweetie." Their favorite terms of endearment for each other remain, as they have since the first night they met, "Lee Adama" and "Kara Thrace."
- They never let Uncle Saul and Aunt Ellen babysit.
- Even after they've been together longer than they've been apart, Lee never gets used to the tattoo on Kara's left arm.
- Kara never stops praying to the Gods-- for friends and family, safety and peace, courage and conviction. But the thing she prays for most is that Lee never changes his mind about her being worth it.
- When they find out the baby is a boy, Zak is the first name they both think of. For reasons both shared and individual, neither one ever suggests it.
- They go to Sunday dinner at Bill and Laura's insistence every week. Neither one of them ever tell Laura how terrible her cooking is.
- Lee never gets tired of hearing Kara laugh.
- Kara never gets tired of seeing Lee smile.
- When their kids are teenagers, they learn to never invite friends over without calling home first. (They've caught mom and dad in rather compromising situations more than once.)
- Deep down, neither of them ever stop thinking the cylons might come back some day. They keep up-to-date on weapons training.
- Lee thinks he's never seen anything more beautiful than Kara wearing his sweats and bitching about her swollen ankles and bloated body at 8 months pregnant. He never tells her though, because for a pregnant lady, he'd bet she still has a mean right hook.
- They fight loudly and often. Kara runs sometimes, but not very far. Lee does a cold shoulder better than the Yeti. But they never let it last too long without a rousing bout of makeup sex.
- They get married, eventually, but they never have a discussion about whether or not Kara will change her last name. It's an antiquated tradition and she didn't the first time she got married (a sore subject), plus there's the Zak baggage (an even sorer subject). Still, when, a few days after they get back from their honeymoon, his wife corrects someone who calls her by her full name to say she's "Kara Thrace Adama, now", Lee grins from ear-to-ear and doesn't stop until Kara suggests a better use for those lips.
- Kara never misses flying. It surprises her sometimes, when she thinks about it, but that's not very often. She's grounded in more ways than one now, but she's still got her wingman on her six and there's nowhere she'd rather be.
- The sex, once they get over the novelty of just having it with each other whenever and wherever and as often as they want, is adventurous and mind-blowing with a frequency that's probably higher than normal (all those years of repression equaling foreplay), but, predictably, Lee's favorite thing about sleeping with Kara is just that: sleeping with her. The way she turns into him after, sweaty and sated and smiling, and he wraps his arms around her to pull her closer, her lips brushing his collarbone, head pillowed on his shoulder, her arms slipping around his waist as their breathing falls into a rhythm. She never tells him that it's her favorite part too.

Date: 2010-10-22 02:01 pm (UTC)2. Lee still refuses to admit that it was her brilliant plan more than his brilliant flying that destroyed the cylon's Tylium plant.
3. Kara and Lee never got married, because neither of them thought it was necessary. After everything they'd been through, together was enough.
4. Lee never lectures her about being a slob, he just cleans up after her and still thinks he's lucky she's his.
5. Kara doesn't tell Lee that the lines on his face make him look older and she's not as young as she used to be. To her, they'll always be young and in love.
6. Kara never remembers Lee's birthday until the day of and then she's frantic. He buys her a calendar but she rips out the pages and uses them to pass notes during boring briefings.
7. Lee never asks about the day Zak died. Maybe some day she'll tell him.
8. Kara never says anything bad about Dee and always listens when Lee talks about her death.
9. Lee still never wins the big pot at triad.
10. Lee and Kara never stop feeling grateful for their time together.

Great stuff! :)

And these are hilarious...

Great post, Tara!

Date: 2010-10-22 04:36 pm (UTC)I teared up at a couple of them. (And I can only say there was one I disagreed with at all... but that is because I think differently than most. Not because it is anything other than perfect in its own way.)
Lovely writing. Truly.

Date: 2010-10-22 07:55 pm (UTC)Looking at it for a moment he saw it too was looking back at him. It had that same irritated look on it's face Kara had when he said something, that was in her mind, monumentally stupid. For a moment he thought perhaps the pigeon was Kara ... then shook his head.
If Kara was to be a bird he surmised; she would be an Eagle. Something that delivered a swift death to her enemies and looked damned neat and tidy doing it. She would not be a rat with rings. Picking up his sharp spear, he speared the pigeon where it stood looking at him.
No a frakking pigeon, Kara did not make. Lee never once had a fleeting moments thought of a pigeon Kara after that, and every last one he came across in life thereafter he speared to death - in a valiant, but futile - mission to wipe every last frakking one out.
He didn't succeed on that one - but it did make him feel better.

Date: 2010-10-22 10:52 pm (UTC)Kara never regretted washing Zak out of the Viper program. In the end, he knew he didn't have the natural talent for it and embraced his Raptor training with the same gusto he applied to all things. He also knew, deep down, that he'd never share the same sort of connection with Kara that Lee clearly did - and flying Vipers had nothing to do with that.
Lee had never had sex in a room with other people than his partner present, until that one shining night. Zak had passed out drunk on the floor of Kara's apartment (not the first time, not the last). The three of them were inseparable, even months after she and Zak had decided to remain just friends and Lee's patience wore thin. Rather than continue to wait to find his moment, he used the liquor as an excuse for making his move. He never told Kara he'd been refilling Zak's glass when he wasn't looking.

It was easy and relaxed, as effortless as ever, until her fingers started fumbling over his unfamiliar tie. She tried working blind, but eventually gave a frustrated grunt and pulled back to give the knot her full attention.
"Having trouble there, ace?" Lee murmured, and she felt the tremor of laughter along his collarbone.
"Shut up," she said. "I've never done the tie thing before, that's all. There," she pulled it loose. "Happy now?"
"Yes," he said. He looked up at her, then said again, "Yes."
She never got tired of hearing it.
