Music has been such an integral part of our fandom and our love of pilots. We have such a variety of music associated with BSG and pilots. We’ve talked about songs from Kara’s POV about Lee, Lee’s POV about Kara, Kara thinking about Lee, Lee thinking about Kara, songs that remind us of pilots’ epic love, and songs that remind us of Starbuck and Apollo.

So now I ask you, are there any songs that remind that make you say that this is how Sam sees K/L or this is how Dee see K/L? Are there songs out there that could be from another character’s POV about Kara/Lee?

Also, from all of these different scenarios, we’ve had the pleasure of listening to some great fanmix or soundtracks about pilots. I ask you, is there a soundtrack for us, shippers???? Have you heard a song that reminds you of your feelings during an episode or your feeling overall towards pilots or BSG itself? Anything that you’ve heard that reminds you of you or shipper nation and its undying love of pilots?

For me:

Not Meant to be by Theory of a Deadman always reminds me of Sam and his POV about his relationship with Kara and his views on the K/L relationship.Lyrics and video

The songs that always remind me of us shippers are:

Jab Soona Soona Lage from the movie Om Shanti Om - Lyrics and video

Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton - Lyrics and video

Ooh, good question. I've never actually thought about songs that fit with Sam and Dee so I'll have to think on this for a bit. :)

Eeeeee!!!!! So excited that this was today's topic! :>)

This is an AWESOME Galactica remix to the song Sabotage, done by the uber-skilled katamaran78.

I love pretty much everything about this entire video. The music is perfect with the images; the characters "slant" tells us yet a little bit more about them... and it just frakking ROCKS OUT!

Enjoy! K :>)

Okay, true story: when I first started watching BSG, I really didn't like Dee all that much. I think I was unfairly influenced by the storylines the writers gave her in S3, but even more than that, I just couldn't see things from her perspective. I couldn't understand why an intelligent, capable young woman like her would put up with all the shit she had to go through.

Then I heard the song Smithereens, by Annie Lennox. AND I GOT IT. Total, complete paradigm shift. Suddenly I saw Kara/Lee the way I believe Dee probably saw them in S3, and through doing that, I gained much more respect for her as a character. The lyrics:

I saw your picture
It made me sorry
For all the things
I never said
It seems that you
Have cause to worry
It seems that you
Don't wish me well

Behind the victim
Behind the trouble
Are all the things
You've not expressed
I see you standing behind your mother
I see you hiding behind her dress

So don't make me sad
I couldn't stand to watch you fall
'cause everybody has a tender heart
Remember this
I didn't mean to break it down to smithereens

I heard you crying
I learned the story
I saw the shadows behind the past
They fall behind you
And creep up slowly
We're only human
Behind the mask

So don't take me down
I couldn't stand to watch you fall
'cause everybody has a broken heart
Remember this
I couldn't stand to break it down to smithereens

And you say
Everybody is an island of their own
And you say
Everybody has a tender heart
Remember this
I couldn't stand to break it down to smithereens

I didn't mean to break it down
I didn't mean to smithereens
Everybody is an island to themselves
Don't you know
Everybody is an island to themselves

I see most of this as meant somewhat sarcastically from Dee's point of view ("I couldn't stand to watch you fall") and her resentment at being caught up in the Starbuck/Apollo thing ("So don't take me down") is also present. But along with that, there are indications that she also ... maybe not respects Kara, but starts to understand a bit more where the latter is coming from ("We're only human behind the mask"). It's such an intriguing look from the other side, as it were, and one of these days I WILL write a fic from S3 Dee's POV, because I think that would be a really good way of challenging myself as a writer.

Sam gets a separate comment because he has two songs - see below!

From: [identity profile] amidala-thrace.livejournal.com
Sam is a bit different for me. I adored him almost right from the beginning, and when it came to S3 I got really pissed off at the runaround he was given. (I'll admit I also experienced a resurgence of those feelings while watching Caprica, where we discover that group marriages do in fact exist ... I was like, "So you couldn't have done that with the QoD in S3 WHY EXACTLY?!" *RAGE*) Anyway. The first song that always makes me think of Sam and his view of K/L, particularly in S3, is Promises by the Cranberries. Lyrics:

You better believe I'm coming
You better believe what I say
You better hold on to your promises
Because you bet, you'll get what you deserve
She's going to leave him over
She's gonna take her love away
So much for your eternal vows, well
It does not matter anyway

Why can't you stay here awhile
Stay here awhile
Stay with me

Oh, all the promises we made
All the meaningless and empty words
I prayed, prayed, prayed
Oh, all the promises we broke
All the meaningless and empty words
I spoke, spoke, spoke

Do-do-do, do-do-do,
Do-do-do, do-do-do

What of all the things that you taught me
What of all the things that you'd say
What of all your prophetic preaching
You're just throwing it all away
Maybe we should burn the house down
Have ourselves another fight
Leave the cobwebs in the closet
'cos tearing them out is just not right

Why can't you stay here awhile
Stay here awhile
Stay with me, oh oh

The second one is more related to my fic (IU), but I'm throwing it in anyway just because. It's from Sam's perspective when he returns from Caprica and finds out Kara and Lee are in love and they have a child. It's Too Little, Too Late by the Barenaked Ladies. Lyrics:

You say, "Why does everything revolve around you?"
You say, "Why does everything I do confound you?"
You say that I pulled the world from under you,
You can't go through it this time

And I could be good, and I would -
If I knew I was understood
And it'll be great, just wait -
Or is it too little too late?

One day, this embarrassment will fade behind me
And that day I could think of things that won't remind me
But these days it's unbearable for both of us
We can't discuss it this way

I'm gaining strength, tying to learn to pull my own weight
But I'm gaining pounds at the precipice of too late
just wait

I could be good, and I would - if I knew I was understood
And it'll be great, just wait -
Or is it too little too late?

Record and play, after years of endless rewind
Yesterday wasn't half as tough as this time
This time is a hell,
Last time, I couldn't tell
This mind wasn't well
Next time, hope I'm ...
Going to be good, and I would -
If I knew I was understood
And it'll be great, just wait -
Or is it too little too late?
Good, and I would -
If I knew I was understood
And it'll be great, just wait -
Or is it too little too late?

Love this topic! I keep playing all these songs I vaguely remember and thinking that's not quite what I mean.

Sam. Poor, poor Sam. I'm going old school for him and choosing Jim Croce's "Lover's Cross" (http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Lover+s+Cross/lKYRr) (and the lyrics (http://www.metrolyrics.com/lovers-cross-lyrics-jim-croce.html)). *sniff*

Dee is harder for me. She knew what she was buying (Kara's castoffs), unlike Sam who seemed more oblivious to anything between Kara and Lee before Kara married him. I understood Dee, though. I went through a bad relationship in my 20s where I was willing to settle for whatever crumbs he would throw me. And trying to come to terms with how I could become that person, someone that would be OK with half a heart in return, was what a lot of my original writing was about for a long time. I keep coming back to Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" (http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/I+Can+t+Make+You+Love+Me/2B1jQy) for her (and the lyrics (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/bonnie+raitt/i+cant+make+you+love+me_20022611.html)). This is the song that bridges me to her committing suicide once Earth is just a scorched ball of rock. She had allowed herself to settle for a man in love with another woman, she hadn't intended to be a lifer in the military, there was no Earth to settle on... *hugs Dee*

A Song for Sammy

I've got a great song for Sam! It's from the Great Expectations soundtrack: Pulp's "Like a Friend".

Like a Friend is the perfect description of a one-way relationship. The kind of love Sam had for Kara, but Kara didn't return. (Honestly now... I don't care about her heart to heart with him in the cylon tub. I still don't think she ever showed the same love for him as Lee). The song describes the self-destructive obsessive nature of one way attraction. And given Kara's behaviors, I think she could clearly fit the lead role. Doesn't matter when she does... Sam keeps coming back for more.

Dee in Season 2

So, maybe crazy, and a bit off base (since Kara's known Lee longer than Dee), but I really think that Taylor Swift's You Belong With Me (http://www.tsrocks.com/t/taylor_swift_texts/you_belong_with_me.html) goes a long way toward explaining why Dee even bothers going after Lee, for me. She sees herself as the one who makes more sense with Lee. She gets him on a level that she can't imagine Kara getting him, because Kara is so diametrically opposite both of them.

No, I agree with you completely. Dee does think she's better for Lee than Kara is, and does stick her nose up higher when Kara's around. The details don't quite fit, but the meaning is spot on. "What are you doing with her when it would be so easy and natural and normal with me?"

I still think she married Lee for the rank and the recognition.

That was a huge part of it, I agree. There were also Daddy Issues and Transference and a whole lot of other things going on, I think. But that's because that's the only way I can make S1/early S2 Dee jive with late S2/S3 Dee.

This one isn't so much a song about pilots as a song about Kara from Sam's point of view, but there's something about its combination of clear-eyed frustration and acceptance that stikes me as very him:

"Always a Woman" by Billy Joel

She can kill with a smile,
She can wound with her eyes.
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies.
And she only reveals what she wants you to see;
Yeah, she hides like a child,
But she's always a woman to me.

She can lead you to love,
She can take you or leave you.
She can ask for the truth
But she'll never believe you.
And she'll take what you give her, as long as it's free.
Yeah, she steals like a thief
But she's always a woman to me.

CHORUS:
Oh--she takes care of herself,
She can wait if she wants,
She's ahead of her time.
Oh--and she never gives out,
And she never gives in,
She just changes her mind.

And she'll promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden,
Then she'll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you're bleedin'
But she'll bring out the best
And the worst you can be.
Blame it all on yourself
Cause she's always a woman to me.

CHORUS:
Oh--she takes care of herself,
She can wait if she wants,
She's ahead of her time.
Oh--and she never gives out,
And she never gives in,
She just changes her mind.

She is frequently kind
And she's suddenly cruel.
She can do as she pleases,
She's nobody's fool.
And she can't be convicted;
She's earned her degree.
And the most she will do
Is throw shadows at you
But she's always a woman to me.

First, I am made of fail! I don't believe I missed fat!Lee last night. Completely forgot the rewatch. I think I am going to have to put an alarm on my phone when UB/UBEX comes up.

Anyhow, on to the question of the day...

I try not to think too much about Sam and Dee, so I don't have much to add there. However, I do have some shipper songs.

Since I am full of creativity and win today (and sarcasm), they all have the word "ship" in them. Clever, huh?

Here goes...

White Flag by Dido ("I will go down with this ship")

Closer to Fine by the Indigo Girls ("sailed my ship of safety til I sank it")

Starlight by Muse ("this ship has taken me far away")

(Despite my sarcasm, I really am fond of these songs for my shipper experience. They all express a sense of exploration, loyalty, and adventure that fits K/L shipper life. It's an adventure I never thought I'd be at all interested in taking. I mean, really, a couple from a scifi show? Really? Yes, really. And I don't care who frakking knows! The exploration has been part of the fun...I've discovered such a lovely group of people here and I've learned how to post pics and gifs and am working on icons and fic and heading to D*C...woohoo! The loyalty...deffo. I feel it between all of us in our concern for each other as friends and our fierce dedication to K/L.)

You should deffo try to come to D*C. I purchased a pass so I can flit in and out of panels, etc., but I'm really going mostly to see shippers. I think you'd be fine hanging out and not doing official events. (After all, I'm sure we shippers will think up our own unofficial events...like chattering, drinking, rewatching UBEX, etc.)

Yay!!! Awesome news. I don't really know all the details since it'll be my first time at D*C. I think the con officially starts Friday but people are getting into town either Thur or Fri. (I'll probably be in the Thur crowd b/c I have a 6 hour drive.) I expect there'll be some sort of shipper goodness going on for us Thur folks.

Do you know what you're doing as far as rooming? I can ask as I think there may be additional rooms in the K/L shipper bunch that was purchased. Let me look into it and I will let ya know for sure. Can't wait to see you!!

White Flag by Dido has always summed up Kara & Lee's relationship to me. The first verse is Lee in "Home" and the second is Kara after "UBEX"

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you or tell you that
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it, where's the sense in that?
I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder, or return to where we were

I know I left too much mess and destruction to come back again, and I caused nothing but trouble, I understand if you can't talk to me again.
And if you live by the rules of it's over, then I'm sure that that makes sense

The Chorus is for both of them if they would just admit their feelings to themselves:

I will go down with this ship, I won't put my hands up and surrender, there will be no white flag above my door, I'm in love, and always will be

Yes, I completely agree with your take on White Flag. There's a good Kara (somewhat K/L I think) vid on youtube also if you haven't seen it. I don't recall the vidder, but it's over there.

It's good to see you posting. :) May I friend you?
